  • 26、   A newly-married Sweden couple on a four-month honeymoon were hit by a series of natural disasters, such as the Australian floods, Christchurch earthquake and Japanese tsunami.

Stefan and Erika Svanstrom left Stockholm, Sweden, on December 6 and were immediately trapped in Munich, Germany, due to one of Europe’s worst snowstorms. Traveling with their baby daughter, they flew on to Cairns in Australia which was then struck by one of the most fierce cyclones(龙卷风)in the nation's history. From there, the couple were forced to shelter for 24 hours on the cold floor of a shopping centre with 2500 others.

“Trees were being knocked over and big branches were scattered across the streets,” Mr Svanstrom told Sweden’s Expressen newspaper. “We escaped by the skin of our teeth. It was so close an encounter with death.

They then headed south to Brisbane but the city was experiencing massive flooding, so they crossed the country to Perth where they narrowly escaped raging bush fires. The couple then flew to Christchurch, New Zealand, arriving just after a massive magnitude(震级)6.3 earthquake destroyed the city on February 22.

Mrs Svanstrom said, “When we got there the whole town was a war zone.”

“We could not visit the city since it was completely blocked off, so instead we traveled around before going to Japan.”

But days after the Svanstroms arrived. Tokyo was rocked by Japan’s largest earthquake since records began. “The trembling was horrible and we saw roofs fly off the buildings,” Mr Svanstrom said. “It was like the buildings were shaking back and forth.”

The family returned to Stockholm on March 29 after a much calmer visit to their last destination -China. But Mr Svanstrom - who also survived the destructive tsunami that hit southeast Asia in 2004 -said the marriage was still going strong. He added, “I know marriages have to endure some trials (考验),but I think we have been through most of them. We’ve certainly experienced more than our fair share of disasters, but the most important thing is that we're together and happy.”

1Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

A.The couple went to Perth because of the bush fire in Brisbane.

B.Christchurch, New Zealand was in ruins when the couple arrived.

C.The couple experienced the worst earthquake in Japan's hi story.

D.The couplet visit to China was comparatively uneventful.

2Which of the following expressions can replace the underlined sentence?

    A.We ran away in fear.

B.Our teeth were broken when we ran away.

    C.We escaped with others' help.

    D.We narrowly escaped death.

3What is the real meaning of what Mr Svanstrom said after the honeymoon?

A.He dared not travel again in a period of time but would face any difficulty in his marriage.

B.He regarded the disasters as tests in their marriage and he felt they survived.

C.He thought they should share the suffering and would provide disaster relief to the affected areas.

D.He believed the horrible experience a sign that they should not be together.

  • 27、   Which is more important when an architect designs a building: beauty or function?

At the start of the twentieth century, Louis Sullivan, one of the creators of modern architecture said that “form follows function.” Functionalism is used to describe the idea behind architecture which primarily focuses on the purpose of a building. However, many people disagree with this and feel that beauty is a more important factor (因素)in architectural design. In the modern world, it seems that most architects combine both ideas: aiming to create buildings which are both functional and beautiful.

The reason for creating a building in the first place is clearly very important. For example, when building an airport terminal, you need to think of the needs of passengers as well as planes. Passengers want to get to their plane as quickly as they can, and planes need to be parked in a more efficient way. As such, many airport terminals have a circular shape with satellite areas. Residential homes need to have enough space for a family, art galleries need wall space to show pictures, and factories need to manufacture goods as efficiently as possible.

Beauty, however, is also important when it comes to the construction of a building. Living or working in an ugly place creates a depressing and uninspiring environment. On the contrary, an attractive building can make people feel happier and increase their motivation to work. There is also a wider responsibility to society which architects have to consider. Beautiful, well-constructed buildings are a symbol of a civilized society, and reflect well on the business or reputation of the owner.

In theory, there seems to be no reason why architecture cannot be both functional and beautiful. Yet in practice, this can cause problems. The Guggenheim Museum in New York, was supposed to combine beauty with function. Many consider the museum's white spiral ramp (螺旋坡道) beautiful, but there have been complaints that it is impractical, as it is difficult to stand back to view the art. Also, the ramp is so narrow that it can become overcrowded. It seems that even a celebrated design has problems with functionality.

If architects focus only on function, buildings may be cold, ugly and uninteresting. On the other hand, if they focus only on making it look beautiful, the building may be completely impractical. Therefore, combining these two ideas is necessary to create the perfect piece of architecture.

【1】From paragraph 3, what is the form of a building closely connected with?

    A.Its specific function.

    B.Its exceptional beauty.

    C.The architect's idea.

    D.The changing world.

【2】Why is beauty an important factor in architectural design?

A.It is a guarantee of people's work efficiency.

B.It can give people spiritual satisfaction.

C.It suggests the fine reputation of an architect.

D.It is a reflection of ancient civilization.

【3】The Guggenheim Museum serves as an example to tell us ________.

A.it is function rather than beauty that architects should focus on

B.world famous buildings must be beautiful as well as practical

C.there is no chance at all to have function and beauty connected

D.it can be difficult to have function and beauty perfectly combined

【4】What is the suitable title for the article?

    A.Architecture: beauty or function?

    B.Argument: theory or practice?

    C.Preference: abstract or concrete?

    D.Conflict: Fantastic or realistic?

  • 28、The human face is a remarkable piece of work. The astonishing variety of facial features helps people recognize each other and is vital to the formation of complex societies. So is the face’s ability to send emotional signals, whether through an unconscious red face or the artifice of a false smile. People spend much of their waking lives reading faces, for signs of attraction, hatred, trust and fraud. They also spend plenty of time trying to hide true feelings or intentions.

Technology is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. In America facial recognition is used by churches to track worshippers’ attendance; in Britain, by retailers to spot past shoplifters. In China, it confirms the identities of ride-hailing drivers, permits tourists to enter attractions and lets people pay for things with a smile. Apple’s new iPhone is expected to use it to unlock the home screen.

Set against human skills, such applications might seem incremental(增值的). Some breakthroughs, such as flight or the Internet, obviously transform human abilities; facial recognition seems merely to encode(编码) them. Although faces are unique to individuals, they are also public, so technology does not, at first sight, interfere with something that is private. And yet the ability to record, store and analyze images of faces cheaply, quickly and on a vast scale promises one day to bring about fundamental changes to opinions of privacy, fairness and trust.

Start with privacy. One big difference between faces and other biometric data, such as fingerprints, is that they work at a distance. Anyone with a phone can take a picture for facial-recognition programs to use. Facebook's bank of facial images cannot be used by others, but the Silicon Valley giant could obtain pictures of visitors to a car showroom, say, and later use facial recognition to serve them ads for cars. Law-enforcement agencies now have a powerful weapon in their ability to track criminals, but at enormous potential cost to citizens’ privacy.

The face is not just a name-tag. It displays a lot of other information—and machines can read that, too. Again, that promises benefits. Some firms are analyzing faces to provide automated diagnoses of rare genetic conditions, far earlier than would otherwise be possible. Systems that measure emotion may give autistic(孤独症的) people a grasp of social signals they find difficult.

【1】Which of the following statement about facial recognition is true according to the passage?

A.It is widely applied by Chinese in many fields.

B.It is applied to track worshippers by American churches.

C.It has been applied by Apple to unlock home screen.

D.It is applied to catch thieves by police.

【2】What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?

A.Flight and the Internet surely transform human abilities.

B.Facial recognition will cause fundamental changes to minds.

C.Facial expressions are not only unique but also public.

D.Facial recognition has just the same effects as other breakthroughs.

【3】From the last two paragraphs, we can infer that __________.

A.the face is superior to other biometric data

B.people can keep a balance between face and privacy

C.the face has shown many benefits especially in medicine

D.fingerprints is a powerful weapon in tracking criminals

【4】What is the best title of the passage?

    A.Human facial expressions

    B.Reading faces

    C.Scientific breakthroughs

    D.Nowhere to hide

  • 29、   The McDonnells lived in a small brick house in Larchmont, a suburb of New York City. Jim was foreman of mail carriers at the post office where he had worked for 25 years. Married in 1960, he and Anne were childless.

On the evening of the eleventh anniversary of their marriage, carrying out the garbage, Jim McDonnell slipped on ice-coated steps, and struck his head. A few days later, driving to work, he lost control of the car, hit a telephone pole, and banged his forehead against the windshield. The following day he fell off the stairs, and again he banged his head. Found unconscious, he was hospitalized for three days with a cerebral concussion(脑震荡). One day in the same month, Jim borrowed a friend’s station wagon and drove to Kennedy Airport to pick up Anne’s brother and family. When he returned the borrowed car at 10 p.m., he was unaware that the wallet containing his identification had slipped out of his pocket onto the floor of the station wagon. After that, he was never seen again.

So what really happened to Anne’s husband? During his walk home, Jim had indeed blacked out(昏厥), losing all ability to remember who he was and where he lived. What happened then is unclear. The next thing he knew was that he was in downtown Philadelphia, a city he had never visited before. Seeing signs advertising the services of a James Peters, a real estate broker, Jim adopted James Peters as his own name. He had no past; his only reality was the present. James Peters got a Social Security card, which could be obtained at that time without showing a birth certificate, and took a job in a health club. He next worked at a cancer research institute, cleaning out animal cages. He also got a nightshift job at the P&P luncheonette, where he became well known for his omelets, as well as his courtesy and good humor.

About a month before Christmas 1985, colleagues noticed that Jim had grown unusually quiet and depressed. Something seemed to be turning in his mind. On December 22, Jim had fallen and banged his head. The next day at work he seemed distracted, and late that afternoon he had fallen again, striking his head. On December 24, he awoke feeling confused, yet delighted. After almost 15 years, he knew who he was! He was James A. McDonnell, Jr., of Larchmont, New York. His wife’s name was Anne.

Anne had just returned home from Christmas Mass, where she lit candles and prayed for Jim. A light snow was falling, and she was in a hurry to leave for Christmas dinner at her sister’s before the roads grew slick. Then the doorbell rang. "Oh my," she thought, "this is not a good time for a visitor." Anne opened the door — and saw a man with a full white beard. Immediately she recognized Jim. She couldn’t speak.

To Jim, Anne looked a little older, but prettier too. His heart overflowed.

    “Hello, Anne,” he said.

1In which year did James A. McDonnell get missing?

    A.1960 B.1965 C.1971 D.1985

2Which CANNOT explain the sentence "He had no past" in Paragraph 3?

A.He had no Social Security Card before he got lost.

B.He lost his memory after his blacking out.

C.He lost his wallet containing his identification.

D.He went to a completely strange city.

3How did Jim feel on seeing his wife, Anne, 15 years later?

    A.scared B.funny C.moved D.anxious

4What would be the best sentence following the last sentence of this passage?

A."Jim," her breath came in bursts, "Is it true?"

B."Yes," she seemed puzzled, "And you are looking for…"

C."Well, Jim," her voice in delight, "Long time."

D."Come on in," said Anne, "I'm expecting you."

On a broiling afternoon when the men were away at work and all the women napped, I moved through majestic depths of silences, silences so immense I could hear the corn 1. Under these silences there was a / an orchestra of natural music playing notes no city child would ever hear. A certain cackle from the henhouse meant we had gained an egg. The creak of a porch swing told of a momentary breeze blowing across my grandmother’s yard. As I 2 along a mossy bank to surprise a frog, a 3splash told me the quarry had spotted me and slipped into the stream. Wandering among the sleeping houses, I learned that tin roofs crackle under the power of the sun, and when I tired and came back to my grandmother’s house, I padded into her dark cool living room, lay 4 on the floor, and listened to the hypnotic beat of her pendulum clock on the wall ticking the meaningless hours away.

I was enjoying the luxuries of a rustic nineteenth-century boyhood, but for the women Morrisonville life had few 5. Their lives were hard, endless, dirty labor.

For baths, laundry, and dishwashing, they hauled buckets of water from a spring at the foot of a hill. To heat it, they chopped kindling to fire their wood stoves. They boiled laundry in tubs, scrubbed it on washboards until knuckles were 6, and wrung it out by hand. Ironing was a business of lifting heavy metal weights heated on the stove top.

They scrubbed floors on hands and knees, thrashed rugs with carpet beaters, killed and plucked their own chickens, baked bread and parties, grew and conned their won vegetables, patched the family’s clothing on treadle-operated sewing machines, 7before the men to start the stove for breakfast and pack lunch pails, polished the chimneys of kerosene lamps, and even found time to tend the flowers that grew around every house. By the end of a summer day a Morrisonville woman had toiled like a serf.

At sundown the men drifted back from the fields exhausted and 8. They scrubbed themselves in enamel basins and, when supper was eaten, climbed up onto the porch to watch the night arrive. Presently the women 9 them, and the twilight music of Morrisonville began.

The swing creaking , rocking chairs 10 on the porch planks, voices murmuring approval of the sagacity of Uncle Irvey as he quietly observed for probably the ten-thousandth time in his life, “A man works from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.”

Visitors can learn the same things as MIT students learn. But as the site points out, Open Course Ware is not an MIT education. Visitors receive no credit toward a degree. Some materials from a course may not be available, and the site does not provide 8 with teachers. Still, MIT says that the site has had forty million visits by thirty-one million visitors from almost every country. Sixty percent of the visitors are from outside the United States and Canada. Students and educators use the site, including students at MIT. But the largest number of visitors, about half, are self-learners.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.
