二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Ever called a movie theater to find out showtime? Or called a customer service center for help? Chances are you didn't speak to a human being. You probably gave commands to an Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) system. These types of systems are efficient money-saving tools that allow companies to address many customer concerns with minimum human intervention.

The technology for such a system has advanced greatly since its appearance in the 1950s. One significant recent achievement is the launching of virtual personal assistants (VPAs) on mobile phones. The most well-known of these is Apple’s iPhone VPA, Siri. If you tell Siri that you want to schedule lunch with a friend, “she” can set the appointment on your phone in seconds. The VPA can also hold a basic “conversation” with a sense of humor. However, it can only be set off when the human user speaks certain key phrases or words.

While the potential for communication between a human and a machine may seem exciting, this possibility concerns some people. Some experts worry about people’s attachment to these machines and fear that the art of successful human-to-human conversation will be undeveloped in younger generations. They worry that people won’t be able to display the right emotion or tone in conversations because they haven’t been practicing those skills. Others fear that machines will take over functions that were traditionally performed by humans, such as customer service.

Another concern often associated with the development of new technology is the invasion of privacy. When people use certain speech recognition applications, they leave behind an audio track of their speech. When you ask a VPA for directions, your speech is often sent and saved to a remote server for processing. This digital information may lead to data mining, or the collection of large quantities of personal data.

For now, however, the continuing evolution of ASR software is thrilling to behold. Asking for and acquiring information from an automated source has never been easier. Leading companies in the speech recognition world will make human communication with machines as seamless as possible - in other words, just like communicating with another human.

  • 27、   Food experts say washing could spread the germs on your turkey in the kitchen sink or nearby food. But it's been a challenge trying to convince cooks to stop rinsing(冲洗) off raw poultry. Germs that can make people sick are common in the guts of healthy poultry and are legally allowed to be on raw turkey and chicken. The assumption is that nobody eats their poultry raw, and that thorough cooking will kill the bacteria.

The do-not-wash raw poultry advice from the USDA is relatively new and perhaps hasn't caught on because it goes against the common belief that washing makes things clean, said Chapman. Benjamin Chapman, a study author and food safety expert at North Carolina State University, said the instinct to wash raw poultry goes back at least decades when people relied more on visual clues to spot problems with poultry. Meanwhile, washing hands and surfaces are also important.

But food preparation is a complicated act, and germs from poultry can be spread even if it's not washed, especially when birds are removed from packaging.

The USDA-funded study stresses that point. Researchers sprayed raw chicken with a harmless strain of E. coli (大肠杆菌) and watched volunteer cooks at test kitchens. Among those who washed their raw chicken, about a quarter ended up spreading the bacteria to their lettuce. But even some of those who did not rinse the chicken got germs on the lettuce. And there are other opportunities for germs to survive on turkeys: melting and cooking.

To ensure a bird is thoroughly cooked, they say to use a thermometer to check that the deepest and thickest parts of it have reached 165 degrees. Even after the meal is cooked, you aren't out of the danger zone. To keep turkeys and other leftovers safe, experts say they should be refrigerated after two hours.

    1People don't accept USDA's advice because _______.

    A.the advice is relatively new.

B.cooks clean the turkey before cooking it.

    C.cleaning seems more trustworthy.

D.heat can kill most germs and no one eats raw food.

2What can be concluded from Paragraph 4?

    A.Food packages carry germs.

B.Germs from a turkey can be spread whether it is washed or not.

C.Hands and surfaces are easy to get E coli.

D.Multiple methods should be applied to food to get rid of germs.

3Which way may help to cook a turkey safely?

A.Rinse off the turkey before it is heated.

B.Keep the turkey away from the lettuce and refrigerator.

C.Wash hands and packages before taking out the turkey.

D.Use a thermometer to check the temperature of the turkey.

  • 28、   Completely avoiding the problem of supply shortages of things like hand sanitizer (消毒剂), a robot has been developed to kill viruses, bacteria, and other harmful germs from hospital floors and other surfaces. Sweetly named Robot Violet, it is proven to kill viruses—and can sanitize an entire hospital room in half the time it would take to do the same task using conventional “deep cleaning” approaches.

The long tube-like light looks like one you might see in a factory, but it floats around the room. Violet’s powers come from ultraviolet (紫外线的) rays shot at very short wavelengths. These break down the DNA in germs and stop them from being able to reproduce and can arrest the spread of germs, ideally including COVID-19, though they are still waiting for test results for the virus to see if the robot can officially be relied upon to remove it.

Many surfaces of various hospital equipment need to be washed by hand. Inventor Connor says his robot would greatly improve this cleaning process, allowing hospitals that are packed with patients to clean rooms and equipment without any human being present. “This system could reduce dependency on the use of chemical-based solutions, which may be effective but requires rooms to be emptied for several hours during sanitization, making them impractical for many parts of the hospital,” Connor said.

Ultraviolet rays are damaging to humans, so they cannot be used to sanitize hands or other areas of skin. To avoid unnecessary harm, an AI system automatically shuts off ultraviolet light if it finds that someone has moved in front of it. The team hopes to produce 50 units in the coming weeks—with their first robot possibly ready for duty by Easter.

If COVID-19 spreads like wildfire, hospitals will need all the innovations like this to prevent it. “We are very happy with the progress we are making,” Connor added.

【1】The Robot Violet is designed to_____________.

A.solve the problem of labor force shortage

B.prevent the global spread of COVID-19

C.kill viruses in hospitals more efficiently

D.avoid people being infected with viruses

    A.By using chemical sanitizer.

    B.By sending out ultraviolet rays.

    C.By giving off short waves.

    D.By keeping the rooms empty.

【3】What is the text mainly about?

A.Hospitals are in desperate need of sanitization supplies.

B.Doctors use new equipment to fight against COVID-19.

C.Medical Al system is making rapid and steady progress.

D.New robots with ultraviolet light are used to kill viruses.

  • 29、In a large survey of people's first memories, nearly 40% of participants reported a first memory that is likely to be fictional, according to findings published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Current research indicates that people's earliest memories date from around 3 to 3. 5 years of age. However, the study from researchers at City, University of London, the University of Bradford, and Nottingham Trent University found that 38.6% of 6, 641 participants claimed to have memories from age 2 or younger, with 893 people claiming memories from age 1 or younger. This was particularly prevalent among middle-aged and older adults.

As many of these memories dated before the age of 2 and younger, the authors suggest that these fictional memories are based on remembered fragments(碎片) of early experience—such as a pram(婴儿车),family relationships and feeling sad—and some facts or knowledge about their own infancy or childhood which may have been derived from photographs or family conversations.

“Further details may be unconsciously inferred or added, e. g. that one was wearing nappy when standing in the cot(幼儿床)," added Shazia Akhatr, first author on the study and Senior Research Associate at the University of Bradford.

“When we looked through the responses from participants we found that a lot of these first 'memories' were frequently related to infancy, and a typical example would be a memory based around a pram," explained Martin Conway, Director at the Centre for Memory and Law at City, University of London and coauthor of the paper.

“For this person, this type of memory could have resulted from someone saying something like 'mother and a large green pram'. The person then imagines what it would have looked like. Over time these fragments then become a memory and often the person will start to add things in such as a string of toys along the top,"   he added.

"Crucially, the person remembering them doesn't know this is fictional," Conway noted. "In fact when people are told that their memories are false they often don't believe it. This partly due to the fact that the systems that allow us to remember things are very complex, and it's not until we're 5 or 6 that we form adult-like memories due to the way that the brain develops and due to our maturing understanding of the world.

【1】What does the underlined word "prevalent" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

B.Added details are an important clue to recall the childhood.

C.Most people claimed to have memories from age 2 or younger.

D.Talks between family members influence the earliest memories.

【3】How does Martin Conway present his opinion?

    A.By making comparison.

    B.By setting examples.

    C.By analyzing data.

    D.By referring to documents.

【4】What's the main idea of the text?

A.Many people's earliest memories may be fictional.

B.People's earliest memories can date back to 2 or younger.

C.The middle-aged and adults specialize in detailing their first memory.

D.Memories develop due to our maturing understanding of the world.

On a broiling afternoon when the men were away at work and all the women napped, I moved through majestic depths of silences, silences so immense I could hear the corn 1. Under these silences there was a / an orchestra of natural music playing notes no city child would ever hear. A certain cackle from the henhouse meant we had gained an egg. The creak of a porch swing told of a momentary breeze blowing across my grandmother’s yard. As I 2 along a mossy bank to surprise a frog, a 3splash told me the quarry had spotted me and slipped into the stream. Wandering among the sleeping houses, I learned that tin roofs crackle under the power of the sun, and when I tired and came back to my grandmother’s house, I padded into her dark cool living room, lay 4 on the floor, and listened to the hypnotic beat of her pendulum clock on the wall ticking the meaningless hours away.

I was enjoying the luxuries of a rustic nineteenth-century boyhood, but for the women Morrisonville life had few 5. Their lives were hard, endless, dirty labor.

For baths, laundry, and dishwashing, they hauled buckets of water from a spring at the foot of a hill. To heat it, they chopped kindling to fire their wood stoves. They boiled laundry in tubs, scrubbed it on washboards until knuckles were 6, and wrung it out by hand. Ironing was a business of lifting heavy metal weights heated on the stove top.

They scrubbed floors on hands and knees, thrashed rugs with carpet beaters, killed and plucked their own chickens, baked bread and parties, grew and conned their won vegetables, patched the family’s clothing on treadle-operated sewing machines, 7before the men to start the stove for breakfast and pack lunch pails, polished the chimneys of kerosene lamps, and even found time to tend the flowers that grew around every house. By the end of a summer day a Morrisonville woman had toiled like a serf.

At sundown the men drifted back from the fields exhausted and 8. They scrubbed themselves in enamel basins and, when supper was eaten, climbed up onto the porch to watch the night arrive. Presently the women 9 them, and the twilight music of Morrisonville began.

The swing creaking , rocking chairs 10 on the porch planks, voices murmuring approval of the sagacity of Uncle Irvey as he quietly observed for probably the ten-thousandth time in his life, “A man works from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.”

A third-grade class knows exactly what will brighten an older neighbor’s holiday meal-and it isn’t a roast turkey. In October, I told the eight-year-olds I taught in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, about my plan. “I’d like all of you to do extra jobs around the house to earn some money, ”I said. “Then we’ll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for someone who might not have a nice dinner otherwise.”

I wanted the children to experience that it’s more blessed to give than to receive. I wanted them to understand that religion is more than nice theological (神学的) ideas; that people somehow have to make it come alive.

Early in Thanksgiving week, the boys and girls arrived in class with their hard-earned money and couldn’t wait to go shopping. After pacing up and down in the supermarket, we put a turkey and decorations in the shopping cart (购物车). At last we headed toward the checkout, and then someone spotted a “necessity” that sent them racing. “Flowers!”

“We have Kristine cried. The group rushed toward the holiday plants. I pronounced, limited money and after all, you can’t eat flowers.”“But Mrs. Sherlock, ” the group replied, looking at me eagerly, “we want flowers.”Defeated, sighed as the children put a bunch of pink roses into the cart.

An organization had given us the name and address of Maria, a needy grandmother who had lived alone for many years. Soon we were bouncing along a rough road to her house. We finally pulled up in front of a small house in the woods. A thin woman with a tired face came to the door to welcome us.

My little group hurried to get the food. As each box was carried in, the old woman kept saying “Thanks”一much to the visitors’ pleasure. When Amy put the pink roses on the table, the woman seemed surprised. She was wishing it was a bag of flour, I thought. Having talked for a while, we returned to the car.

    Paragraph 1

As we fastened our seat belts, we could see the kitchen window.

    Paragraph 2

Upon seeing the moving scene, the children became quiet.
