  • 26、Below are some ways to show appreciation to your parents:

Obey and respect them—This is a very important thing to do. Parents are very pleased when their daughters or sons obey and respect them. They feel like they are so important, and they feel like everything they have done for their daughters or sons is very worth it. 1. Obeying and respecting parents is also a way to show you value them so much.

Give time to them—I know we are all growing up. 2. You have work, or you have school activities that keep you busy. But hey, do you forget that as you grow up, your parents are also getting old? When your parents see you every day, they feel more alive. So give them time. It's not that hard.3Well, I know all parents have their own special occasions. You must remember them and celebrate them. Nothing can make your parents happier than celebrating their special occasions with their loved ones, especially their birthdays.

Keep eating together at mealtimes—Even though you are busy or you don't live with your parents, at least find some time to eat together with your parents. You are even luckier if you are living together with your parents. Lots of families are losing the practice of eating together. 4 So you can discuss family matters, or family conflicts. Your parents can also discuss proper behavior and manners during eating together. 5.

    A.Remember and celebrate special occasions

B.This is also family bonding and you get to know each other

C.Take some time this Sunday to take them to the movie theater

G.Pick up some items from your local grocery and cook something delicious for your parents

  • 27、   A little more than 30 years ago, a teenager named Jadav “ Molai” Payeng began burying seeds along a barren sandbar(沙洲)near his birthplace in northern India’s Assam. Not long after that, he decided to dedicate(献身) his life to this effort, so he moved to the site in order that he could work full-time creating a new forest ecosystem. Unbelievably, the spot today hosts a sprawling(蔓延的) 1360 acres of jungle that Payeng single-handedly planted.

The Times of India recently caught up with Payeng in his remote forest cottage to learn more about how he came to leave such an unbelievable mark on the landscape.

It all started way back in 1979, when floods washed a large number of snakes ashore on the sandbar. One day after the floods, Payeng, only 16 then, found the place dotted with the dead snakes. That was the turning point of his life.

“The snakes died in the heat without any tree cover. I sat down and wept over their lifeless bodies. I asked the forest department if they could grow trees there. They said nothing would grow there. Instead, they asked me to try growing bamboo. It was painful, but I did it .There was nobody to help me. Nobody was interested,” says Payeng, now 47.

While it’s taken years for Payeng’s remarkable dedication to planting to receive some well-deserved recognition internationally, it didn’t take long for wildlife in the region to benefit from the forest. Demonstrating a keen understanding of ecological balance, Payeng even transplanted ants to his ecosystem to maintain its natural harmony .Soon the shadeless sandbar was transformed into a natural ecosystem. The forest, called the Molai woods, now serves as a safe habitat for numerous birds, deer, rhinos, tigers and elephants.

Despite Payeng’s outstanding project, forestry officials in the region first learned of this new forest in 2008, and since then they’ve come to recognize his efforts as truly remarkable, but perhaps not enough.

“We’re amazed at Payeng,” says Gunin Saikia, Assistant Conservator of Forests. “He has been at it for 30 years .Had he been in any other country, he would have been made a hero.”

1Payeng moved to the barren sandbar to ________________.

A.make a living there B.plant trees to improve the environment

C.do some research D.look after the 1360 acres’ jungle

  • 29、The warm coast of California is a place where many western monarch butterflies stay during the cold winter months in the United States. Researchers fear the record low number of monarchs this year could mean the insects are in danger of disappearing in the near future.

Researchers from the Xerces Society said they found fewer than 2,000 orange-and-black butterflies in the yearly count this January. That number showed a big drop from the tens of thousands in recent years. In the 1980s, there were millions of them in trees from Northern California’s Marin County to San Diego County near the Mexico border. Last winter, it recorded around 29,000 butterflies in its yearly survey. That was similar to the winter before, when an all-time low of 27,000 monarchs was counted.

Every winter, western monarch butterflies fly south from the northwestern U. S. to California. At the start of November, they arrive in California, often going to the same places and even the same trees. Once warmer weather arrives in March, the monarchs begin their journey back north, stopping somewhere along the route to lay eggs. After egg-laying, the adult butterflies die and the northward migration (迁徙) is continued by their new generations. Thus the monarch butterflies disperse across the country.

Scientists say there are several causes for the extremely low numbers of butterflies in the western states. Homebuilding and chemical use have destroyed milkweed plants along their migratory path. The plants are needed for monarch butterflies to grow and develop, which is the only food monarchs will eat and the only place they will lay their eggs on. Climate change influences the growth of wild plants. And huge wildfires in the west may also have influenced their migration.

Luckily, some public campaigns have encouraged people to plant milkweed in their yards and cities. People can also help scientists collect data, which is critical for developing conservation policies to protect monarchs. Then there are many larger — scale efforts to protect habitats and better manage land for reproduction.

四、短文填空 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 34、Directions: Complete the following sentences by using the proper form of the words or expressions given in the frame. Each one can only be used once.

Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems?  Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 1 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internetthey appeared to 2that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.

While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to3. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.

“Users are becoming slightly more 4what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”

But 5no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.

Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 6 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.

Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!said that it was “the first step to7passwords”. He said it was a(n)8that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.

It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.

“We are, for the most partpredictably9when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 10, and so do password crackers.

  • 35、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word. For the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

    My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

  • 37、Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 1 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.

Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 2.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 3 supporting.

The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 4 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 5.

If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 6 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 7 of all resources.

And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 8 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 9 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 10 human being.
