  • 26、   When we’re studying a new language, many of us approach it with fear and anxiety. However, we would benefit a lot by changing our focus, according to communication skills trainer Marianna Pascal.

Pascal has spent 20 years in Malaysia helping people speak better English. Over time, she has discovered a surprising truth: How well somebody communicates in a new language has very little to do with his language level — but a lot more to do with his attitude.

Pascal noticed that a lot of Malaysians went into English conversations with the feeling that they were going to be judged by how many mistakes they were going to make. And they had the idea of what good proper English is supposed to be and how far they would have to go to get there.

As a teacher, she’d noticed one specific student named Faisal. Despite not knowing much English, this guy could just sit and listen to anybody very calmly, clearly, and then he could express his thoughts beautifully.

Pascal realized when Faisal entered an English conversation, he didn’t feel judged. He entirely focused on the person that he was speaking to and the result he wanted to get. He got no thoughts about his own mistakes.

Pascal believes that speaking a language is not like those exams that many of us had to take in school, where a tiny spelling or grammar mistake would result in a big red X from the teacher. In the real world, small mistakes don’t matter — what matters is whether we’re able to make ourselves understood. She concludes, “If you want to speak English like Faisal with that great confidence, here’s the one thing that you can do when you speak: Don’t focus on yourself, focus on the other person and the result you want to achieve.”

1Why was Faisal successful in English conversation according to Pascal?

A.His spoken English was quite excellent.

B.His attitude to speaking English was right.

C.He and his partner were good friends.

    D.He made few grammatical mistakes.

2What is the Pascal’s attitude to the mistakes English speakers make?

    A.Tolerant. B.Careful.

    C.Grateful. D.Worried.

3What should you do if you want to communicate effectively in English?

    A.Try to express yourself correctly.

B.Remember to use a new language.

    C.Avoid any mistakes while speaking.

D.Concentrate on what the other people say.

  • 28、For decades, China had wanted a Nobel Prize in science. Tu Youyou, a researcher who helped to develop a malaria(疟疾)medicine, finally won the country that honor.

In fact, Tu is not the only scientist in China who is catching the world’s attention. In 2016, the Nature journal published a list of the top 10 science stars in China. Gao Caixia and Cui Weicheng are two of them.

Gao Caixia has been devoted to genetic engineering for her whole career. She is known for using CRISPR-Cas9, the revolutionary gene-editing technique that is sweeping through biology labs around the world – in crops.

At first, Gao was unwilling to take up gene editing using CRISPR-Cas9 because her lab at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology in Beijing had already created mutations(变异)in 82 genes using an older type of technology. But after thinking carefully about it, she decided to give it a try.

After a year of hard work, her lab finally succeeded. Gao worked on genetic engineering in wheat, a crop that is famous for being difficult to work with. Now she is considered one of the best in the world at engineering wheat.

Cui Weicheng is the developer of China’s record-setting Jiaolong submersibl(e   潜水器). He is now a professor at Westlake University. In 2012, Cui rode inside China’s Jiaolong submersible and reached a depth of more than 7,000 meters in the Pacific.

Thanks to Jiaolong and the 57-year-old developer, China is now one of only a few nations that can explore the deep sea. Jiaolong can travel deeper than any other manned research submersible currently in use, which shows China’s increasing ambition and leadership in deep-sea research.

【1】Why is Tu Youyou mentioned at the beginning of the passage?

    A.To show one of China’s long-held dreams.

B.To stress the importance of the Nobel Prize.

C.To praise Tu Youyou for her contributions.

D.To introduce more top Chinese scientists.

【2】Why did Gao Caixia work on wheat?

A.Because she failed in her attempt to study other crops.

B.Because she was expert at wheat engineering.

C.Because wheat is hard to be genetically engineered.

D.Because wheat is the most widely planted crop in China.

【3】What is Cui Weicheng’s biggest contribution to China?

A.He teaches about sea at a university.

    B.He developed Jiaolong submersible.

C.He is devoted to genetic engineering.

D.He reached the bottom of the ocean.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A.China’s Science Stars

    B.China’s Nobel Prize Dream

    C.Gao Caixia-China’s Crop Engineer

    D.Cui Weicheng-China’s Deep Diver

  • 29、   Gauri Nanda sees a wearable computer as a handbag - one that’s built out of four-inch squares and triangles of fiber, with tiny computer chips embedded(嵌入) in it. It looks, feels, and weighs like your typical leather purse.

That’s where the similarities end: This bag can wirelessly keep track of your belongings and remind you, just as you’re about to leave the house, to take your wallet. It can review the weather report and suggest that you grab an umbrella. This purse can even upload your favorite songs onto your scarf.

Sure, a computing purse and scarf set may seem like the stuff of science fiction. But these devices(装置), part of next generation of wearable computers, could become commonplace within a few years. DuPont created new super strong fibers that can conduct electricity, and can be woven into ordinary-looking clothes. And the chipmaker developed chip packaging allowing wearable computers to be washed, even in the heavy-duty cycle.

As a result, these new wearable devices are different from the heavy and downright silly versions of the recent past, which often required users to be wrapped in wires and type on their stomachs. Unlike their predecessors, these new wearable computers also make economic sense. When her bag becomes commercially available in two to three years, Nanda expects it will cost around $150, which is the price of an average leather purse.

Here’s how the bag works: You place a special radio-signal-transmitting chip onto your wallet. A similar radio in your purse picks up the signal and notifies you that you’ve forgotten to take your wallet. In turn, sensors on your purse’s handles will notify the computer that you’ve picked up the purse and are ready to go.

Already, these new kinds of wearable devices are being adopted for use in markets like auto repair, emergency services, medical monitoring and even, increasingly, for consumers at large. Indeed more people will want to cross that bridge in the coming years-making for a booming market for wearable computers that don’t look like something out of science fiction.

1Which of the following describes a wearable computer?

    A. It can be washed in washing machines.

    B. It is much heavier than a leather purse.

    C. It can download songs from the Internet.

    D. It is made of clothes conducting electricity.

2According to the passage, the new wearable computers ____________.

    A. require users to operate on the stomach

    B. pick up the signals through wires and chips

    C. are being applied in some different areas now

    D. are smarter but more expensive than the old ones

3What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?

    A. The new wearable computers have become fashionable.

    B. People would like to learn more about the new computers.

    C. New wearable computers promise to sell well in the future.

    D. The idea of the purse-like computers comes from science fiction.

4The purpose of the passage is ____________.

    A. to introduce a new kind of computer

    B. to explain the functions of computers

    C. to compare different types of computers

    D. to show how high technology affects our life

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high1 — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an2 intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the3 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an4 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.

From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?

The answer is yes. The first artwork5 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its6 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.

Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.

Art is a way in which human 7 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 8 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain9 traits of old master paintings be called art?

For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as10. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.

Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.

It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

Smell the flowers before you go to sleep and you may just end up with rosy dreams. Have a whiff of rotten(腐烂的)eggs during the night and your dreams may be1(pleasant). So says researcher Dr. Boris Stuck, 2invited sleeping volunteers to a rose vs. rotten egg test in the University Hospital Mannheim in Germany. The subjects didn’t dream about roses3eggs, but rather he found that what they smelt affected the emotions of4(they) dreams.

And if you think5(smell) have a say in dreams, wait for what TV tells us. A UK study reveals that people exposed6black-and-white film and TV in their youth are to have monochromic(单色的)dreams throughout their life more7(probable). Eva Murzyn from the University of Dundee tested two age groups— one half 8(age) over 55 and9other half under 25.

The result? Under 5% of the dreams of the under-25s were in black and white. 10(watch)color TV in childhood seems to be the reason why.
