  • 26、Encouraging children to use gestures as they think can help them come up with more creative ideas, according to new research.

“Our findings show that children naturally gesture when they think of unusual ways to use everyday items, ”says psychological scientist Elizabeth Kirk. “When we then asked children to move their hands, they were able to come up with even more creative ideas. ”

“Gesturing may allow us to explore the properties(特性)of the items — for example, how the item could be held, its size, its shape, etc. — and doing so can help us come up with ideas for creative uses, ” Kirk explains.

In their first study, the researchers compared the creativity of children who spontaneously (自发地)gestured with those who either did not or could not gesture.

A total of 78 children, aged 9-11, saw a series of images of ordinary items, such as a newspaper, a tin can, and a kettle. The researchers asked the children to look at each image and list as many uses as they could think of. A group of participants completed the task twice — on one version of the task, they wore mittens(连指手套)that limited their ability to gesture.

Restricting children’s ability to gesture did not affect their ability to come up with creative uses for the objects; Children who were free to gesture produced about the same number of ideas as those who wore the mittens and could not gesture.

In a second experiment, 54 children completed the same alternative-uses task. In some cases, children gestured normally; in other cases, the researchers encouraged the children to“use your hands to show me how you could use the object in different ways”.

The encouragement worked: Children who were specifically encouraged to gesture produced a greater number of creative uses for the objects than did the children who were not given any special instruction.

“Our findings add to the growing body of evidence showing the significant role of gesture in thinking and have applications to the classroom,” Kirk concluded in their paper.

【1】What did the researchers intend to find out in the first experiment?

A.The number of creative ideas the children could think of.

B.How the children would explore the properties of the items.

C.Whether encouraging gesture would help to produce more new ideas.

D.The difference between thinking with gestures and without gestures.

【2】Why were mittens used in the experiment?

    A.To restrict gestures.

    B.To limit creative thinking.

C.To test the ability to gesture,

    D.To increase creative ideas.

【3】When did the children think of the most new ideas?

    A.When wearing mittens.

    B.When encouraged to gesture.

    C.When naturally gesturing.

    D.When not using their hands.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

    A.Communicate with Gestures

    B.Think with Your Hands

    C.Use Everyday Items Creatively

    D.Make Gestures when Necessary

  • 27、Stressed About Coronavirus? Monitor Your Body Language

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other health professionals, have maintained that the recent coronavirus can be spread by touching people or surfaces infected by the virus, and then touching your face-particularly your mouth, nose, and eyes, where the virus can gain access to your body. No doubt, fears of this potentially deadly virus is causing people around the world a great deal of stress. 【1】

You may have seen clips of health professionals warning about face-touching in press conferences, but then absent-mindedly touching their own faces-even licking a finger to turn a page on their written speeches! 【2】 Unfortunately, stress can increase the incidence of face-touching behavior.

A common body reaction to stress is self-touching. Some of that might consist of chin or cheek rubbing, which can bring infected fingers dangerously close to the mouth. Of course, there is also nail-biting, which provides the virus with direct access to the mouth.

Research on nonverbal signals of lying has focused on common body language signals connected with stress. 【3】 Stress from telling a lie has been associated with people touching their noses or faces. It has been suggested that temporary increases in tension or stress-such as when someone is telling a lie-may cause the nose to itch (发痒). This leads to response of scratching or rubbing the nose

Stress may also lead to dry eyes, mainly because the automatic reaction to fear-induced stress is to widen the eyes and blink less frequently, thus drying out our eyes. Our responses can include eye rubbing behavior-opening the way for the virus to enter our bodies.

Don’t get me started talking about greetings. 【4】 However, greeting behaviors such as touching hands (handshaking), cheek-kissing and hugging all open the door for viral transmission (病毒传播). Moving to more safe forms of greeting -waves, fist-bumps, or even bowing-should become the norm during these troubling times.

【5】 We need to become more aware of our nonverbal behavior and go into social situations more mindfully.

A.To sum up, what should we do?

B.Some of these same signals could lead to infection.

C.It is probably because they have been under too much stress.

D.In other words, nonverbal signals of stress might lead to infection.

E.That is why people may touch their noses or faces when telling a lie.

F.In social gatherings people almost automatically extend their hands or hug.

G.What’s worse many of our unconscious reactions to stress can lead to infection.

  • 28、   Can you believe your eyes? A recent experiment suggests that the answer to that question may depend on your age.

Martin Doherty, a psychologist at the University of Stirling in Scotland, led the team of scientists. In this experiment, Doherty and his team tested the perception(观察力) of some people, using pictures of some orange circles. The researchers showed the same pictures to two groups of people. The first group included 151 children aged 4 to 10, and the second group included 24 adults aged 18 to 25.

The first group of pictures showed two circles alone on a white background. One of the circles was larger than the other, and these people were asked to identify the larger one. Four-year-olds identified the correct circle 79 percent of the time. Adults identified the correct circle 95 percent of the time.

Next, both groups were shown a picture where the orange circles, again of different sizes, were surrounded by gray circles. Here's where the trick lies in. In some of the pictures, the smaller orange circle was surrounded by even smaller gray circles —making the orange circle appear larger than the other orange circle, which was the real larger one. And the larger orange circle was surrounded by even bigger gray circles—so it appeared to be smaller than the real smaller orange circle.

When young children aged 4 to 6 looked at these tricky pictures, they weren't fooled—they were still able to find the bigger circle with roughly the same accuracy as before. Older children and adults, on the other hand, did not do as well. Older children often identified the smaller circle as the larger one, and adults got it wrong most of the time.

As children get older, Doherty said, their brains may develop the ability to identify visual context. In other words, they will begin to process the whole picture at once: the tricky gray circles, as well as the orange circle in the middle. As a result, they're more likely to fall for this kind of visual trick.

1Doherty and his team of scientists did an experiment to evaluate_____________.

A.children's and adults' eye-sight B.people's ability to see accurately

C.children's and adults' brains D.the influence of people's age

2When asked to find the larger circle,_____________.

A.children at 6 got it wrong 79 % of the time with no gray ones around

B.only adults over 18 got it right 95% of the time with gray ones around

C.children at 4 got it right about 79 % of the time with gray ones around

D.adults got it right most of the time with gray ones around

3According to the passage, we can know that_____________.

A.a smaller orange circle appears bigger on a white background

B.an orange circle appears bigger than a gray one of the same size

C.a circle surrounded by other circles looks bigger than its real size

D.a circle surrounded by bigger ones looks smaller than its real size

  • 29、   Donald Kennedy would probably be amused by an old friend's tribute(颂词)to him as “very close to being a Renaissance man.”

It's hard to argue with the facts. The 8 years he served as editor-in-chief of Science was only the final chapter in a long and very exceptional career. He spent most of it at Stanford University, including 12 years as its president, interrupted by a 2-year head of the U. S. Food and Drug Administration under former President Jimmy Carter. But the Harvard University-trained neurobiologist wore those and other honors lightly, driven by a greedy curiosity about the world and a wish to help make it a better place.

Kennedy, who died on 21 April of COVID-19 at age 88, enjoyed his role as a scientist, educator, public servant, and communicator, recalls Tom Grumbly, who was his assistant at FDA. "A brilliant, funny, very special person," says Grumbly, who leads a foundation that claims increased support for agricultural research. "He could talk on any level to people about science, without placing himself above them. And he could stand shoulder to shoulder with the best scientists in the world.”

The combination of a towering intellect and a genuine concern for the individual served Kennedy well at Science. "He was a wonderful partner at the American Association for the Advancement of ScienceAAAS," says Alan Leshner, a former longtime chief executive at AAAS, which publishes Science. "He contributed his wisdom about science and public policy to our efforts on behalf of the community.”

As editor from 2000 to 2008, Kennedy led the journal through some high-profile(备受瞩目)controversies and quickly produced editorials(社论)on all matters affecting its readers. And it wasn't his nature to step backward.

In that 2008 editorial, Kennedy offered advice to Alberts, his successor, on editing a scientific journal. But it could also stand as an epitaph(墓志铭)on his long career in the public stage.

"Be as fair as you can, sympathize with anger, confess institutional error when appropriate, and be firm," Kennedy wrote. "And when the disappointed complain to members of the AAAS Board, remember to smile!"

1What do we know about Kennedy from the first three paragraphs?

A.He worked at Stanford University after serving in Science.

B.He had a strong desire to make the world work for better.

C.He led a foundation to strongly support agricultural research.

D.He respected ordinary people but looked down on scientists.

2What did Kennedy intend to tell Alberts in his advice?

A.Working for Science is not as easy.

B.Seeing the editorial work as a career.

C.Holding truth firm with a broad mind.

    D.Remembering to smile while working.

3Which of the following can best describe Kennedy?

A.Curious and funny. B.Amusing and greedy.

C.Crazy and controversial. D.Intellectual and caring.

4What is the writer's purpose of writing this passage?

    A.To honor Kennedy. B.To introduce a celebrity.

C.To remind us of Science. D.To tell a life story.

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Once there was a little girl named Emily. Although her singing was very pleasant to hear, lacking of courage, she never dared to sing in front of strangers.

One summer, the neighborhood where she lived would hold a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, “I’m afraid to take part in it.” Her mother said, “it’s okay, just do it bravely.” Emily followed her mama’s advice and decided to give herself a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid (胆小的) to walked onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily (颤抖地) forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What’s worse, she was so nervous that she forget the lyrics (歌词) after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.

Some naughty boys ran after her and said, “Emily, coward (胆小鬼)! Emily, coward!” Emily didn’t argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mom and cried sadly.

“Well, my poor girl. Don’t cry. Tell me what happened to you.” asked her mom. Emily looked up her mother and told her what she had experienced.

Listening to her, her mom cupped her face and said, “it doesn’t matter, girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don’t be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you.”
