27、 Communities change in all sorts of ways over time. My few trips home over the years have given me an idea of the long-term influence on a community when population falls even while wealth rises.
I come from one of the beautiful seaside towns that dot the Jersey Shore just seventy-five miles south of New York City. When I was growing up thirty-five years ago, these were lively and busy communities filed year-round with resident(居民) and full of tourists all summer.
Today, I notice one big change since my childhood: no people. No children playing around, no traffic in the streets and no customers looking through the storefronts. The big beautiful Victorian homes that housed families with five or more children and grandparents mow sit quiet. The line of old bicycles in the drive has been replaced by a single luxury(豪华的) car from other states.
Few who grew up here can afford to live in their parents’ homes today. Over time, the beauty of the place along with its perfect location turned a middle-class, family-centered neighborhood into a collection of vacation homes for the rich. The town is too expensive for the “locals” but too far from the City for workers.
It is not bad-just different.
Unless of course you own a small business that was built to serve a large year-round population. Small hardware stores, clothes shops, gift shops and independent cafes have been replaced by law offices and businesses dealing with houses and land. The hospitality(招待) industry, which includes my parents’ business, is having a hard time as there just aren’t enough customers between September and June. The land is worth more than the business itself, waiting for condo(公寓) developers.
Rising land and house values in Oak Park make me think of my family’s experience on the Jersey Shore. A community is more than a place-it is the people who live there. Who will live in Oak Park in thirty years? Just wondering.
【1】How was the author’s hometown when he was a child?

C.Condo developers. D.Small business owners.
【4】How does the author probably feel when writing this text?

C.Doubtful. D.Surprised.
28、 I have been worrying for weeks now about what to give my mother for Mother's Day. For most people, this is a modest problem, solved by the purchase of a bathrobe or a box of candy. For me, however, Mother's Day represents an annual challenge to do the impossible---find a gift that will make neither Mama nor me feel terrible.
Expensive gifts—which Mama defines as costing over $1. 98—are out, because they make Mama feel terrible. (“This is awful," she says, examining an apron(围裙)). "I feel just terrible. You shouldn't have spent the money on me) Inexpensive presents---under $1. 98---please Mama, but they make me fell terrible. There is always the danger that a gift given to Mama will bounce swiftly back to the giver. If I give her a plant, she cuts off the top for me to take home. If I give her something edible (可使用的),she wants me to stay for lunch and eat it.
Papa, a sensible man, long ago stopped trying to shop for Mama. Instead, on Mother's Day, her birthday, and other appropriate occasions, he writes a short epic poem in which he tells of their meeting, courtship, and marriage. After nearly 30 years of poems, Papa sometimes worries that the edge of his poetic inspiration has dulled, but Mama doesn’t complain. She comes into the room while he is struggling over a gift poem and says, "It doesn’t have to rhyme(押韵)as long as it's from the heart. "
This year, finally, I think I, too, have found a painless gift for Mama. I am going to give her a magazine article, unrhymed but from the heart, in which I wish her “Happy Mother’s Day" and tell her there's nothing Papa or I could ever buy, find, or make her that would be half good enough anyway.

29、 In the Pacific Northwest during winter, 5:15 am might as well be the dead of night. The alarm goes off and the only light is the red glow from my clock. My body says, “Go back to bed.” But I don’t. I know my running partner will be waiting in the street and I’m not going to stand her up. Then I walk onto the road, complaining about the cold and wishing I were back under my warm covers.
If you’d have asked me a year ago if I could see myself running at 5:15 on a winter morning, I’d have laughed. Morning just wasn’t my thing and running in the morning was something I didn’t even consider. “I prefer to work out in the middle of the morning or in the afternoon,” I’d say to my friends who go to the gym before work.
Then, last fall I reconnected with an old neighborhood friend. She’d been running in the morning and taken off forty pounds that year. When I looked in the mirror, I knew I could benefit from the same kind of weight loss. I asked if I could join her. I knew I needed to change something if I was going to get back in shape.
The first two months were especially hard, because we ran twice a week at 5:15 am and I slept till 7:00 the other mornings. But as I’ve adjusted to the routine of running, I’ve discovered great joys that make it even more worthwhile than a little weight loss.
While I haven’t lost forty pounds yet, it’s amazing how much more energy I have and how much stronger I feel. Because of the morning run, the rest of my day is more productive. I wouldn’t say I’ve become a morning person, but I would say morning running is now my thing.
【1】What can we know about the author from paragraph 1?

32、About five years ago, when the first generation of wearable fitness trackers became popular, they were announced as the _______of a revolution. Health experts and business people alike said that giving people _______ to real-time calorie-burning and step-count data would inspire them to lose weight, eat better and most importantly _______more. But even as the U.S. market for _______ devices hits $7 billion this year, there’s evidence that their promise isn’t quite paying off.
The U.S. has an exercise problem, _______ 28% of Americans aged 50 and over considered wholly _______. That means 31 million adults move no more than is necessary to perform the most basic functions of daily life. Wearables, experts_______, were going to change that. But limited academic research has been done to figure out whether wearables _______people’s behavior in the long term. The research that does exist isn’t _______. For a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers wanted to see whether activity trackers would help overweight people lose more weight over two years than if they just did a weight-loss intervention alone. They didn’t. “We found that just giving people a device doesn’t mean it’s going to ________ something that you think it’s going to lead to,” says John Jakicic, the author of the study, from the University of Pittsburgh. “These activity trackers don’t engage people in strategies that make a ________ in terms of long-term change”
Another new study ________ a different challenge: user ________. By the end of a yearlong study of 800 people, just 10% of participants were still wearing the trackers, according to, Eric Finkelstein, a professor at the Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. “We didn’t find that Fitbits really have much of an effect,” he says. This may well be because people expect trackers to do something they’re not designed to do—________, force them to change their behaviors. “There’s __________among people about their function, a measurement tool and an intervention,” Finkelstein says. A scale counts pounds, for example, ________it won’t teach you how to eat less. “When people put these devices on, they might interact with the app for the first few weeks, maybe the first few months, but there comes a point where that starts to fall off,” says Finkelstein.
To be ________, some of the costlier and higher-tech wearables have features baked into them ________ encourage users to move more, says Shelten Yuen, Fitbit’s vice president of research. Among them are: shaking sensors, movement reminders and social-media combination, all designed to ________ users to make better health choices every day. But more research will be needed to determine whether or not these features or others like them— could ________ improve people’s health and fitness levels.

Everyone has their own unique fingerprint; 【1】 makes fingerprints an ideal way to unlock smartphones. However, this may be 【2】 (safe) than we think.
Scientists at New York University and Michigan State University in the US have developed a set of fake fingerprints. They say that the prints 【3】 unlock any fingerprint-enabled smartphone up to 65 percent of the time.
The artificial fingerprints 【4】 (create) by using many common features found in human prints. They work 【5】 taking advantage of the way smartphone scanners check a fingerprint.
The fingerprint scanners 【6】 (use) in smartphones are so small that they only read parts of fingerprints. So they have to take many scans of your finger or thumb (拇指) 【7】 they work properly. Smartphones also let users save several finger and thumbprints. Since a print only has to match one of the saved images 【8】 (unlock) the phone, the scanner is more likely to make mistakes.
Although the scientists have only tested their findings in computer simulations (模拟), 【9】 (worry) about the safety of using fingerprints are reasonable .They warn that the technology used to create artificial fingerprints is improving 【10】 (extreme) fast.

Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems? Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 【1】 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.
When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internet, they appeared to 【2】that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.
While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”,there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to【3】. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.
“Users are becoming slightly more 【4】what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”
But 【5】no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.
Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 【6】 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.
Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!,said that it was “the first step to【7】passwords”. He said it was a(n)【8】that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.
It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or,“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.
