27、Vaccination(接种疫苗)is among the most effective ways to help us prevent diseases. For viruses that don't change too much-the measles virus(麻疹病毒), for example—getting vaccinated is a once-and-for-all method to prevent you from becoming infected with the virus. If you had two measles vaccines when you were a child, you will be protected for life.
However, it's a different story when it comes to influenza(流行性感冒), commonly known as "the flu", which generally peaks between December and February. Flu vaccines cannot protect us in the long term.
There is no long-term immunity(免疫), according to Theodore Strange, associate medical director at Staten Island University Hospital in New York. "The virus essentially 'changes its coat'—HIN1, H2N3, and so on," he told the website Healthline.
Apart from a person's immune protection from flu vaccination declining over time, flu viruses are also constantly changing. So the vaccines are likely to be updated from one season to the next to protect against the viruses that research suggests may be the most common during the upcoming flu season.
Thus, to develop effective flu vaccines, over 100 national influenza centers around the world conduct year-round surveillance(监测)for influenza. Researchers will test thousands of influenza virus samples from patients, according to the official website of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC). The World Health Organization also suggests there are three or four influenza viruses that are most likely to spread among people during the upcoming flu season.
But even when a vaccine is developed, getting it can prove to be difficult, as it is in high demand and short supply. The timing of influenza vaccine production and distribution is unpredictable, thus the availability of the flu vaccine supply does not always coincide with(与……一致)peak demand.
So scientists prioritize(划分优先顺序)access to the vaccination. The CDC recommends key populations, such as medical staff, teachers, students, children and those aged 60 and above, receive flu vaccines.
This year the situation seems more complicated, as the upcoming flu season coincides with the COVID-19 pandemic. This could overwhelm hospitals, straining(过度使用)resources and healthcare workers' time.
【1】What do we know about influenza?
A.Influenza viruses are continuously changing.
B.It commonly peaks between November and December.
C.Getting two flu vaccines can protect people against the viruses.
D.HINI and H2N3 are the most easily infectious flu viruses.
【2】What do researchers do in order to develop effective flu vaccines?
A.They update vaccines once a year.
B.They monitor the flu throughout the year.
C.They focus on one or two viruses during a period.
D.Influenza centers worldwide share virus samples from patients.
【3】Why do scientists prioritize access to the vaccination?
A.Because not all people can afford it.
B.Because some people refuse to get vaccinated.
C.Because the vaccine is not safe for everyone.
D.Because the vaccine doesn't always meet the demand.
【4】What does the author think of the upcoming flu season?
A.It could be more challenging than ever for medical workers.
B.Enough resources have been prepared to cope with it.
C.Flu vaccines will be provided for the public in November.
D.The flu vaccines are expected to help prevent COVID-19.
28、An advance in electronic publishing could make the e-book you are reading seem as dated as a silent film. Publishers hope to explore the growing success of e-books by releasing versions with added soundtracks(电影配音)and musical accompaniments.
The noises in the first multimedia books — released in Britain on Friday - include rain hitting a window in a Sherlock Holmes tale. When the plot of a book reaches the most exciting part, background scores will create tension.
Supporters argue that sound effects are the next logical development for e-books and will add excitement for younger readers. Critics, however, will argue that the noise will ruin the simple pleasure of having the imagination stimulated by reading.
Caroline Michel, chief executive of the literary agency, said the new generation of computer- literate readers was used to multiple sensory input. She said, “Young people have split computer screens where they may be watching television and replying to an email at the same time. If that's what the market wants then we should respond to the market.”
Book track's sound effects work by estimating the user's reading speed. Each lime you turn a page, the software reassesses where you have reached in the text and times the sounds to switch on accordingly. If the soundtrack becomes out of synch (同步),a click on any word will reset it.
Some authors fear that a soundtrack could destroy the peace and quiet of libraries and ruin the pleasure, of reading. David Nicholls, author of Our Day, the bestseller now released as a film, said, “This sounds like the opposite of reading. I have enough trouble reading an e-book because I'm constantly distracted by emails.
Stuart MacBride, the crime writer whose novel Shatter the Bones was an e-book bestseller, sells 18% of his books as electronic downloads. He said, “If I'm reading, I will do the noise in my head. I don’t need someone to tell me what lea cups clinking sounds like. That would irritate (激怒)me.”
【1】What do publishers expect an e-book soundtrack to do?
A.Help to release an e-book as a film.
B.Help readers improve reading speed.
C.Add tension at a book's exciting point.
D.Get readers familiar with the background.
【2】Who is in favour of added soundtracks for e-books?
A.Mr. Darcy.
B.Caroline Michel.

D.Stuart MacBride.
【3】What do we know about Stuart MacBride?
A.He was a person who was easy to get angry.
B.He knew a great deal about tea and tea culture.
C.Eighty-two percent of his books described crime.
D.He imagined sounds related to the story when reading.
【4】What's the main idea of the passage?

29、At some point in the near future, self-driving cars may become common on the roads. Self-driving cars have already been test-driven, but they are not yet available for the public.
Self-driving cars have already been test-driven thousands of miles. 【1】 Passengers could do things such as eat or read on the way. Best of all, the self-driving cars that were tested experienced fewer accidents than average human drivers.
【2】There are issues that must be solved before self-driving cars can be made available to the public. One problem is that a car cannot predict problems far down the road like a driver can. 【3】 For example, a driver can see that a child is riding her skateboard directly into the road 0. 3 km away and start to slow down. The self-driving car can react only once the child is in its immediate path.
【4】 They may become confused by fog, heavy rain, or road spray from another vehicle's wheels. They don't predict or “feel" that the roads have become icy like an experienced driver would. For instance, when a road is icy, a human driver would step on the brakes(刹车)more gently than when the roads areclean and dry.
Another issue is that self-driving cars have maps programmed into their memory, but these maps aren't always updated and accurate. 【5】 Because of this, there is no promise that a self-driving car can get a passenger to his or her destination. Perhaps one day, self-driving cars will be everywhere. However, we are not ready for that just yet.
A.Self-driving cars has disadvantages.
B.These cars had only passengers, no drivers.
C.The safety problems have almost been addressed.
D.New roads are built, and old roads are closed down.
E.So why aren't self-driving cars common on roads today?
F.The self-driving cars can react to things only once they actually occur.
G.Self-driving vehicles also have difficulty adjusting to weather conditions.

I was enjoying the luxuries of a rustic nineteenth-century boyhood, but for the women Morrisonville life had few 【5】. Their lives were hard, endless, dirty labor.
For baths, laundry, and dishwashing, they hauled buckets of water from a spring at the foot of a hill. To heat it, they chopped kindling to fire their wood stoves. They boiled laundry in tubs, scrubbed it on washboards until knuckles were 【6】, and wrung it out by hand. Ironing was a business of lifting heavy metal weights heated on the stove top.
They scrubbed floors on hands and knees, thrashed rugs with carpet beaters, killed and plucked their own chickens, baked bread and parties, grew and conned their won vegetables, patched the family’s clothing on treadle-operated sewing machines, 【7】before the men to start the stove for breakfast and pack lunch pails, polished the chimneys of kerosene lamps, and even found time to tend the flowers that grew around every house. By the end of a summer day a Morrisonville woman had toiled like a serf.
At sundown the men drifted back from the fields exhausted and 【8】. They scrubbed themselves in enamel basins and, when supper was eaten, climbed up onto the porch to watch the night arrive. Presently the women 【9】 them, and the twilight music of Morrisonville began.
The swing creaking , rocking chairs 【10】 on the porch planks, voices murmuring approval of the sagacity of Uncle Irvey as he quietly observed for probably the ten-thousandth time in his life, “A man works from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.”

A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly( 经常地)remind him about his meetings, his classes, even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors, “If John didn’t have his head tied on, he would forget that too!” Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn’t that he was not clever, as some critical people tended to say, but just very, very absent-minded.
One hot summer day, Pro.Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor’s wife was surprised to see him again so soon.
“Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town.”
“What? You forgot the name? Maybe one day you will forgot my name! Now I’ll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don’t forget where you put it.”
Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.
