26、Films and computer games
In just a few decades the gaming industry has become much bigger than the film business. What is called “interactive entertainment” makes more money than Hollywood cinema. Is there any way of making films more appealing to people who like to play computer games?
Making a film out of a best-selling computer game can guarantee a large audience. 【1】 Nowadays films are made with similar ones. They have attractive action scenes relying on fantasy effects as well. Gaming markets consist of science-fiction games, and film-makers have also set films in science-fiction worlds. 【2】 Any attempt to borrow more than the setting from a game is certain to fail.
Why do gamers feel disappointed by films based on their favorite games? One of the reasons is technical. Now everything can be computer-produced. 【3】 However, filming a scene from 20 different cameras would cost a fortune, so it simply isn’t done in the film version—leaving the gamers feeling that the film didn’t look as real as the computer game.
【4】 In a film the director doesn’t show you some things to keep you have the feeling of excitement or anxiety. For example, you wouldn’t be interested in watching the film if you knew the identity of the murderer. But this is not true for computer games. When you play a game, you have to do certain tasks to continue to the new level. 【5】 You are always in control as a player, while in the cinema you never control the action. You just sit and watch.
There can be some interaction between films and computer games on different levels. For all the similarities between technologies and special effects, we shouldn’t forget that a story and a game are fundamentally different.
A.Cameras matter in another sense, too.
B.The success of a game usually lies in the use of special effects.
C.You can’t influence what happens at all in the computer games.
D.Computer games may show the action from a number of views easily.
E.The game has a good chance of being as successful as the film on which it is based.
F.You must be able to have access to all the information in order to decide what to do next.
G.However, the difficulty for film producers appears to be knowing where and when to stop.
27、Walking routes that are quicker and cheaper than the Tube in London
Love to shop? You can walk between Knightsbridge and fashionable Sloane Square in around 10 minutes一much simpler than swapping lines at South Kensington.
Don't fall into the trap of taking the Piccadilly line between Covent Garden and Leicester Square. It takes just four minutes to walk and you'll avoid the queues for the lifts at Covent Garden.
*Use a Santander Cycle for just £2
It costs £2 to access Santander Cycles for 24 hours. The first half hour is free each time you hop on a new bike, which means you can make multiple trips in one day and still pay only £2.
*Hop on a bus
Buses don't just offer a scenic way of getting around London—they're easy on the wallet too! A single fare costs just £1.50, while unlimited bus travel on a contactless card costs £4.50.
Make the most of the hopper fare, which allows you to make a second bus journey for free within an hour of travel.
*Go contactless for the cheapest fare
If you have to take the Tube, use the same contactless card all day long to make the most savings when making multiple journeys. Contactless card users benefit from a daily cap (上限).

28、 It is well known to car drivers that red means “stop”, green means “go” and yellow means “hurry up and make that damn light”. Why those colors, though? The answer lies in the fact that the earliest traffic signals were designed for trains, not cars. They were red and green, gas-powered, and more than a little dangerous in the event of a leak.
Red is an inherited (继承的) symbol from railroads, which symbolizes danger in many cultures. As red has a longer wavelength than any other color on the visible spectrum (光谱), it can be seen from a greater distance than other colors. Red has meant “stop” since long before cars existed, with train signals’ use of red dating back to the days when mechanical arms lifted and lowered to indicate whether the rail ahead was clear.
Green’s wavelength is next to (and shorter than) yellow’s on the visible spectrum, meaning it’s still easier to see than any color other than red and yellow. Back in the early days of railway lights, green meant “caution”, while the “all-clear” light was, well, clear or white. It is said that several disastrous collisions happened after an engineer mistook stars in the night for an all-clear. Thus, green became “go”, and for a long time, railways used only green and red to signal trains.
From the earliest days of motoring up until mid-1900s, not all stop signs were red-many were yellow, because at night it was all but impossible to see a red stop sign in a poorly lit area. In 1950 the yellow stop-sign craze began in Detroit, a city that five years later installed its first electric traffic signal, which happened to include the very first yellow traffic light.
But what of those mysterious yellow stop-signs? As materials and technologies evolved, the ability to produce highly reflective signs meant that red could resume its natural spot in the sign hierarchy (层次体系,等级体系), leaving the still-highly-visible yellow to the domain (领域) of “caution”. That’s why school zones and buses, crosswalks, and other important warnings are yellow today.
【1】What’s the main reason for the color red’s long being used to mean “stop”?
A.It has the longest wavelength on the visible spectrum.
B.It represents danger in many cultures.
C.It can be seen even in the dark area.
D.People prefer red to other colors.
【2】Which of the following may the author agree with?
A.The meaning of red is culture–specific.
B.Yellow functioned as stop signs in the 1900s.
C.Green’s wavelength is just second to that of red.
D.Green’s role in traffic lights has changed over time.
【3】What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.The significance of road traffic signs.
B.The history of railroad transportation.
C.The symbolic meaning of different colors.
D.The origin and development of traffic lights.
29、Should Parents Teach Children How to Tweet?
Social media is a seemingly endless source of concern for parents, with worries that it weakens their children’s confidence and attention spans. But others counter that it could also be broadening their horizons.
The latest round of worry was sparked by a study of the impact of social media use on 8-12- year-olds published by Anne Longfield, Children’s Commissioner for England. The report focused on 32 children, who said they used social media to stay connected with friends and family and to have fun, by watching videos for example. But they also described pressures from constant contact, online comments that weaken their self-esteem, and the need to shape offline activities to make them shareable. “You see your friends going ice skating, partying or talking about how much revision they have done, and it can make you feel inadequate,” says Bea, a junior school student from Bristol, UK. “It’s just so hard to get away from.”
Children have to take risks on their journeys to adulthood, and desires to fit in and be popular existed before Mark Zuckerberg came along with Facebook. However, in previous generations these pressures came largely from people they knew, and they mostly stayed outside the home. Now the pressures could come from any one of the nearly 3 billion people online, and follow them from school to home, and can even continue through the night.
The pressures do get on parents’ nerves, among which the utmost concern is how their children can be protected from harms, given that social media is now integral to the way many young people interact. A good starting point is a basic understanding of childhood development milestones.
Broadly, children have a high dependency on carers for security and guidance up to the age of 5, increasing independence and self-care from 6 to 11, and increasing autonomy and growing reliance on peers from 12-18 years old. Against this background, the suitability of social media for children of different ages should be considered respectively.
According to Longfield’s study, children should be taught about online safety from an early age, better before secondary school. There is growing evidence that efforts need to be extended to provide earlier guidance on less extreme but more common risks, including oversharing, low selfesteem, addiction and insomnia. The evidence suggests she is right. However, approaches that focus merely on the potential negatives are unlikely to work.
“My school has tried to do a lot, but it often involves trying to drill into us how bad social media can be,” says Bea. “People of my age really like social media, so I think a better approach would be if they said ‘Although it is good, here are some negatives’.”
【1】We can learn from Paragraph 3 that ______.

Nowadays, going to a higher education institution is not the only option one has. The Internet-the place where it is possible to find anything--has become a perfect solution for those who want to learn something new, but have no possibility or desire to go to college. Although online education may not seem to be large enough compared to the traditional one, it possesses a number of solid advantages you should consider.
First of all, online education means comfort. Studying in a college or university often equates to moving to a different city, handing over loads of money, living on campus, and having to go out no matter how horrible the weather outside is Studying online, you get yourself rid of all these disadvantages. Regardless of whether you are at home, on vacation, or having a lunch break in the office, all you need to learn something new is your laptop and an Internet connection.
Secondly, online education is much more affordable than the traditional one. For example, on Udemy, you can find all kinds of educational programs whose prices often stay in the range of $180-200. Coursera, along with regular paid courses, also offers a variety of free educational materials available for everyone. Of course, not all of the online degrees offer cheaper prices, but due to the absence of travelling costs and other factors, studying online proves to be more accessible. Studying materials, as well as other resources, are often included in the price for an online course.
Finally, you can study at your own. Educational institutions have to focus on an average student. The disciplines you will study, the methods of education, teachers, and the academic environment are not yours to choose. At the same time, the Internet gives you the opportunity to study as much as you want, with any teacher or instructor you like. Many courses online have teaching videos. You can watch one per day, or you can finish an entire course in a week-you can do whatever is convenient to you.

Eighty-five percent of the jobs that today's students will do in 2030 don't exist yet,the Institute for the Future has predicted. That might seem like a high number to reach in only 10 years. But think about the non-mainstream careers that did not exist just a handful of years ago: social media manager, app developer and cloud computing engineer, etc. What role should colleges and universities play in preparing students for a workplace that is constantly changing? Educational institutions are trying to answer that question."We hope they will not only be prepared for whatever the job market looks like in 10,20 or 50 years but be the ones shaping it," said Jenn Stringer, professor at the University of Californian,Berkeley. Here are some of the approaches they're taking.
Some experts argue that the four-year learning model needs to be rethought in a big way. They say education can no longer be seen as something that stops when a person graduates from college. If students could take a year or two off school, get a job,and then return to school a few years later, the education system would offer true life-long learning and better adapt to changing technology.
Fewer employers are willing to train people on the job than the employers 50 years ago, largely as part of an effort to cut costs. To fill the job skills gap, some courses are offered as an add-on to a student's main degree. For example, the courses may include data analysis, web design and digital marketing. The goal is to offer students,a degree aside, some advantages when they seek jobs or promotions in the future.
Other institutions are trying to imitate the workplace within the traditional classroom. Several colleges have partnered with private companies, such as the software company Adobe, to integrate their products into the classroom.Professors at schools who partner with the company are encouraged to use the product for assignments. The idea is that students learn how to create a project that can be used in the real world and the"soft skills"such as teamwork and creativity.
