二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Without sharp reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, climate change threatens future Winter Olympic Games because their locations would be too warm to host the events, a new study has found.

If the world’s high emissions continue their trend, by the 2080s all but one of the 21 cities that previously hosted the Winter Games - Sapporo, Japan - would not be able to do so again. Among them, 6 cities would be considered “marginal” while 14 would even be seen “unreliable”— meaning the right conditions for snow and athlete safety cannot be met.

But that won’t necessarily happen if the world takes urgent action and follows the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, according to Daniel Scott, the lead researcher for the University of Waterloo’s report. Under that deal, nearly 200 countries agreed to greatly cut their collective greenhouse emissions.

Athletes and coaches surveyed by the researchers said they re already seeing the effect climate change has on their sports. “Some of the coaches that did the survey have been coaches in the sport for 30 years,” Scott said. “They’ve traveled the world, back to the same competitions, and they’ve seen that certain competitions don’t happen, as regularly or uninterruptedly as they used to because of warmer temperatures.”

The Summer Olympics are also feeling the effects of climate change. Tokyo’s Olympic and Paralympic Games are likely one of—if not—the hottest and most humid Games on record. Daily temperatures reached 80F high with high humidity (湿度) that could make it feel like 100°F.

But winter sports seem more strongly influenced by the impact of a warmer world. During the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, skiers were overheating in the same way a marathon runner would at nearly 90F weather. Due to the great impact, the study makes us worry that outdoor games may have to move indoors or be held at a different time of year altogether in order to accommodate higher temperatures.

【1】What does the underlined word “marginal” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Almost unqualified.

    B.Pretty satisfactory.

    C.Rather unpopular.

    D.Quite suitable.

【2】Why are Tokyo’s Olympics mentioned in Paragraph 5?

A.To show the spirit of the Olympics.

B.To stress the impact of climate change.

C.To reveal the cause of warmer climate.

D.To compare summer and winter Olympics

【3】What is the author’s attitude to the finding of the study?

    A.Conservative.

    B.Tolerant.

    C.Optimistic.

    D.Concerned.

【4】What does the text mainly talk about?

    A.Global climate changes.

    B.Greenhouse gas emissions.

    C.The Winter Olympics crisis.

    D.The future Olympic Games.

  • 27、   The African elephant will disappear within two decades if urgent action is not taken to save one of the world's most iconic animal species, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has warned in a new campaign fundraiser.

The population of these elephants—the largest animal currently walking the earth—has declined by 70 percent in the last 40 years, in large part because of the illegal ivory trade, which is the biggest driver of elephant poaching, according to the non-profit.

In fact, 20,000 elephants are killed every year to feed this trade—which is equivalent to one death every 26 minutes.

Once an elephant is killed, poachers harvest the ivory to meet a growing demand for products made from this material. Ivory can be turned into ornaments and decorations, as well as being used in traditional Asian medicine for its intended therapeutic value. Elephants are also sometimes killed to provide a source of meat.

This poaching takes place despite a global ban on ivory sales under the CITES multilateral treaty (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) which was introduced in 1990. Above the poachers are powerful organized criminal networks which commonly engage in corruption, money laundering and assassinations.

Part of the issue in policing the problem is that the governments of nations where Africans elephants live often lack sufficient resources to protect and monitor elephant herds, which often reside in remote and inaccessible habitats. When the animals are killed, they often suffer a brutal death.

African elephants are found in 37 countries across the continent and are categorized as “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with a remaining population of around 415,000 in the wild, according to WWF.

These animals play a crucial role in the ecosystem, helping to maintain healthy habitats for many other species.  This is because African elephants help to disperse seeds.

The population of African elephants—which are split into two subspecies—once numbered between three and five million during the last century. However, this figure has fallen dramatically as a result of poaching and other factors, such as habitat fragmentation or loss.

1The word “poaching” (paragraph 2) probably means ________.

    A.desperate desire B.severe damage

    C.illegal hunting D.cruel killing

2What is the main reason for the sharp decline in the number of African elephants

A.They were hunted by other animals.

B.They failed to survive the natural disasters.

C.There is no suitable living environment.

D.They were illegally traded for ivory.

3Which of the following can be learned from the passage?

A.Absence of bans or regulations on ivory sales is the biggest driver of elephant poaching.

B.Elephants living in remote habitats are less vulnerable than those living in nations with adequate resources.

C.If the African elephant disappear, the ecosystem there is likely to be ruined.

D.African elephant herbs usually migrated in large population.

4What’s the best title for this passage?

A.African Elephants Will Be Gone in The Future

B.African Elephants, Leading Role in Ecosystem

    C.The Population of African Elephants

    D.Different Types of African Elephants

  • 28、If I could give today’s young people three wishes, they would be: More hugs. More time outside in nature. More belief in their own power to change the world. While most people understand the importance of the first two wishes, the third one leaves some folks wondering why young people’s belief in their own power is so essential.

Let’s start with the idea that all of us--especially young people--need heroes. We need them to be our guides on the difficult trail(足迹)we call life and to show us just how far we can go. And we need heroes today more than ever. Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a celebrity and a hero. And the difference: is vital. A celebrity is all about fame(名望)--temporary, superficial fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move. A hero, by contrast, is about character--qualities under the surface that aren’t visible until they take action.

Heroes are all around us. They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others, teaching children, and protecting the environment. They don’t want fame, or glory; they just want to help. In so many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail.

Yet, young people hear a lot more about celebrities than about heroes in the media. The hidden message they get from all this is that their self-worth comes from what they buy--which shoes, which cell phone--not who they are down inside. What gets lost in this? Young people’s sense of their own potential for heroic qualities--their own power to make a positive difference in the world. Truth is, there is a potential hero, a future difference maker, in every young person. Each of them, from whatever background, is a positive force who can do something. All it takes for that to be true is belief.

How do we help young people believe in their own power? The best way is simply to share examples, of other young people who have made a difference.

Ryan, age 11, has worked tirelessly to raise money to provide clean drinking water to African villages. When he first heard about the plight(困苦)of African children who died from impure water, Ryan was only six years old. In the next five years, he raised over $500,000--enough to build over 70 water wells.

Barbara, age 17, grew up on a farm in Texas. When she realized that local farmers were pouring their used motor oil into rivers, causing pollution, she organized the creation of a recycling center for crude(未加提炼的)oil. Her project has grown to include18 recycling centers in Texas.

The list could continue. These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.

【1】What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 2?

A.To give examples of celebrities and heroes around us.

B.To discuss the differences between celebrities and heroes.

C.To provide definitions of the words “celebrity” and “hero”.

D.To explain the details about being celebrities and heroes.

【2】What could be inferred from Paragraph 3?

A.Heroes make the world go round.

    B.Heroes must believe in themselves.

C.Heroes focus on social welfare programs.

    D.Heroes promote cooperation between people.

【3】What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A.Heroes and celebrities are both valued today.

B.Society doesn’t support the development of heroes.

C.The media turn ordinary celebrities into real heroes.

D.Young people don’t have the belief in their own strength.

【4】How does the author advance his view that young people have the potential to be a hero?

A.By defining the qualities that make a young person a hero.

B.By contrasting the achievements made by different young people.

C.By giving examples of young people who show the qualities of a hero.

D.By providing examples of qualities that have made young people famous.

【5】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.More heroes are needed in the world.

B.Celebrities are reported too much in the media.

C.Adults should become role models for young people.

D.Young people should believe in their ability to make a difference.

  • 29、   Honey (蜂蜜) from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees’ nest () and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper—a little bird called a honey guide.

The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax (蜂蜡) in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees’ nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.

Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.

1Why is it difficult to find a wild bees’ nest?

A.It’s small in size. B.It’s covered with wax.

C.It’s hidden in trees. D.It’s hard to recognize.

2What do the underlined words “the follower” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.A honey seeker. B.A bird. C.A bee. D.A beekeeper.

3The honey guide is special in the way ________.

A.it gets its food B.it goes to church

C.it sings in the forest D.it reaches into bees’ nests

4What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Wild Bees B.Wax and Honey

    C.Beekeeping in Africa D.Honey-Lover’s Helper

A huge milestone has just been reached in the field of artificial intelligence: AlphaGo, a program developed by Google’s DeepMind unit, has defeated legendary Go player Lee Se-dol in the first of five historic matches being held in Seoul, South Korea. Lee 1 after about three and a half hours, with 28 minutes and 28 seconds remaining on his clock. The series is the first time a professional 9-dan Go player has taken on a computer, and Lee is 2 for a $1 million prize.

“I was very surprised,”said Lee after the match.“I didn’t expect to lose. “I don’t regret accepting this challenge,”said Lee.“I am in shock, I admit that, but what’s done is done. I enjoyed this game and look forward to the next. A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people hardly visited. The house was very old and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out he would not say hello to neighbors or passers by but simply just glare(瞪眼看)at them.

The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy's parents told him to stay away from the house. A lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same from their parents.

As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. " What do you want?" the old man said. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota(份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines.

"Uh, sir, I uh am selling these magazines and uh I was wondering if you would like to buy one." The old man just stared at the boy. The boy could see inside the old man's house and saw that he had dog figurines(小狗雕像) on the wall. "Do you collect dogs?" the little boy asked. "Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here. They are all I have." The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul. "Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much." The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, "No boy, I don't need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye."

The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the big house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

Paragraph 1: The boy headed back down to the old man's house with the figurine.
