二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The question about the history of cacao(可可) has long interested researchers who wonder how and why it became so important to ancient Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Maya and Aztecs. Archaeological(考古学的) evidence once pointed to the first use of cacao in Mesoamerica about 3,900 years ago. Traditionally, archaeologists have assumed that Mesoamericans were the first not just to use cacao, but to grow it. Recently, researchers at the University of British Columbia have got a new finding that humans started to grow cacao trees and consume cacao in South America around 5,300 years ago.

In the hunt for the origins of human planted cacao , the researchers went to an ancient village in the highlands of southeastern Ecuador. Only a small area of the village was decayed after such a long period, which struck researchers as surprising. Consequently, they were able to find much evidence of the use of cacao at the Santa Ana-La Florida archaeological site.

The researchers found extremely small pieces from the cacao tree in the remains of containers and other objects, as well as genetic material from the tree. They also identified a substance found in the cacao tree but not in its wild relatives. This suggests that humans grew the tree for food purposes, especially drinks. Michael Blake, an archaeology professor who helped lead the study, said, “The remains with cacao on them say how people used the substance at the time. They clearly drank it.”

There is no established history of ancient populations in South or Central America using cacao to make chocolate the way people do now, the researchers reported. The populations in the upper Amazon area today still use cacao to make special drinks. Evidence suggests cacao planting moved into Central America and Mexico about 4,000 years ago. ”As for cacao’s going north to Central America and more areas, it was a long journey related to trade and many others,” said Blake.

【1】What did the new discovery find about cacao?

A.It came into use much earlier than thought before.

B.It was planted in Central America at the beginning.

C.Ancient populations used it as toady’s people do.

D.Mesoamerican civilizations were affected by it greatly.

【2】What does the underlined word ”decayed“ in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.preserved

    B.explored

    C.valued

    D.destroyed

【3】How did the researchers find out cacao’s original use?

A.By examining the storage method of cacao at the site.

B.By collecting genetic material from cacao trees.

C.By analyzing objects on which cacao was found.

D.By comparing cacao trees with their wild relatives.

【4】What might be talked about in the following paragraph?

    A.The change of cacao’s use.

    B.The spread of cacao.

    C.The way of making chocolate.

    D.The trade in cacao.

  • 27、New research on ants has firstly shown that insects have the ability to shrink and then regrow their brains. It relates to how these particular ants, called the Indian jumping ant, reproduce.

“In most ant colonies (种群), the queen is the only member of the colony that lays eggs. When she dies, the colony dies. The workers just do the hunting and take care of the babies and the chores.” says Clint Penick, a professor of biology at Kennesaw State University in Georgia. But this is not true for Indian jumping ants. Their worker ants have the ability to mate and reproduce. So when the queen dies, a dominance tournament starts. They’ll fight each other over a month to decide who’s going to be the next queen.

The queen doesn’t have an exact replacement. Tournament winners — called “gamergates” — all assume queen-like duties of laying eggs. The study found that when the ants take on the role of gamergates, their brains reduce its size by 19% on average, so that they can save energy to focus on producing eggs. The fact that the ants’ brains shrink to reproduce wasn’t new. But what scientists didn’t know was whether they had the ability to regrow.

Penick’s team separated gamergates from their colonies for a few weeks. The thinking was that the lack of social interaction and care would make them return to their previous status. It worked. After several weeks, the ex-gamergates were back to being low-class workers — with their bigger brains regrown. “We are now starting to find that there are animal species that are capable of shrinking their brains and then regrowing them, even humans to some degree.” Penick says.

There are still potential suggestions for humans. According to Penick, the brains are more flexible in size than we knew. The brains of ants have some shared features with humans. So now scientists are looking at digging into the genetic and other neural mechanisms (神经机制) supporting these brain changes.

【1】What is special about the Indian jumping ant colony?

A.The worker ants fight with the queen.

B.The queen is the only one to lay eggs.

C.The colony continues even if queen dies.

D.The queen is devoted to baby nursing.

【2】What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?

A.Some ants won the competition of laying eggs.

B.Gamergates are not willing to regrow their brains.

C.Whether ants can regrow brains wasn’t known before.

D.The downsizing of ants’ brains was first found in the study.

【3】The underlined “it” in the passage may refer to ___________.

    A.shortage of socialization

    B.separation from their living space

    C.a return to previous status

    D.low-class workloads for working ants

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.The Special Queens of the Ant Colony

B.A Genetic Wonder: from Ants to Humans

C.The Flexible Brain of Indian Jumping Ants

D.A Shrinking Ant Brain: from a Worker to a Queen

  • 28、Maths anxiety may be causing a national crisis (危机), Cambridge University researchers have said, as they find that one in ten children suffer from anxiety at the subject.

Researchers surveyed 1,700 British pupils aged 8 to 13 about their feelings towards the subject. They found 10% of children suffred from maths anxiety. Other feelings caused by maths included fear and anger, while physical symptoms (症状) included a racing heart or struggling to catch breath.

“The project studied students' attitudes towards maths because of what could be called a maths crisis' in the UK,” researchers said. “Many children and adults experience feelings of anxiety. fear or discomfort when they face maths. This may be leading to a low level of maths in the country.” The number of adults with functional maths skills equal to a GCSE (英国普通中等教育证书) grade Chas dropped from 26% in 2003 to only 22% in 2011, according to the survey. At the same time, only 57% of the children achieved the same level in functional maths skills.

Dr. Denes Szucs, a professor at Cambridge's Centre for Neuroscience (神经科学) in Education said that there is a misunderstanding that only low performing children suffer from math anxiety. “This is a common misunderstanding that we have seen in decision makers,” he said. “They assume people are anxious about maths because they are poor achievers.” In fact, more than 77% of children with high levels of maths anxiety are normal to high achievers. Dr. Szucs went on, “Probably their maths anxiety will go unnoticed because their performance is good. But they are very worried and in the long term their performance is limited. This is a real danger here: these are children who are completely able to do maths at a normal level, but may keep away from it because they feel anxious.” The research also found that girls have higher levels of maths anxiety than boys.

John's Hillman, director of education at the Nuffield Foundation said, “Mathematical achievement is valuable, as a foundation (基础) for many other subjects and as an important predictor of future academic learning, job hunting and even health. Maths anxiety can seriously influence students' performance in both primary and secondary schools.”

D.How can children realize the importance of learning maths?

  • 29、My first memory of academic anxiety was when I was in second grade. I had nightmares about not putting my homework folder in my backpack, nightmares about forgetting to do worksheets. In high school, test anxiety ruled my world. Exams gave me extreme panic attacks. I lived my life between exams, pausing everything in my life for tests.

When the pandemic(大流行病)forced school to move online, school became more flexible and felt a lot less serious. Homework and tests were structured differently, and classes seemed less formal. Things began to gently change for me—tests of different form helped me calm my nerves. Being able to take assessments from my own room, completely alone helped comfort my anxiety. The powerful damaging force of the pandemic pushed me see the things that mattered to me more than school, grades, or feelings of success: my health and the health of my loved ones, physically, mentally, and emotionally.

The pandemic suddenly changed so much of the world we know and the way we interact with it. It forced me to realize we should not—and cannot—wait to push for our own happiness. We should not wait to seek help, but work on ourselves, and better ourselves. Realizing this better version of ourselves is not a dream. With work, we can change. A few weeks ago, I walked into a midterm test thinking mostly about what I was going to order at Starbucks when I finished. No panic attacks, no extreme tiredness. The night before the test, I watched TV before bed.

This took a lot of work energy, and time to get to. It also certainly still isn’t my “normal”—anxiety is still a huge factor in my life, one that I think will never entirely leave me. And though pieces of it certainly are, ingrown in my heart, it flows gently out, and stops to weaken me so seriously as it did before.

【1】What was the main reason for the author’s anxiety?

    A.Daily life.

    B.School tasks.

    C.Poor memory.

    D.Extra exams.

【2】What made the author realize the truly significant things?

    A.Tests of different forms.

    B.The relief of his anxiety.

    C.The change to online classes.

D.The bad impact of the pandemic.

【3】How can we achieve our better version according to the passage?

    A.Relaxing ourselves.

    B.Waiting for help patiently.

    C.Interacting with the world.

    D.Pursuing happiness actively.

【4】Which is the author’s present situation?

A.He is still scared of exams.

B.He leads a life without anxiety.

C.Being relaxed in study is his normal.

D.Being anxious can’t affect him as before.
