二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The sun is going to enter the orbit of Mercury according to scientific calculations, which will result in the Earth catching on fire. Who will save the world?

This imaginative tale is at the heart of a Chinese sci-fi movie The Wandering Earth. Unlike many American space-themed films where the solution to a challenge Earth faces is always fleeing the planet in spaceships, this time we’re taking the Earth with us. The film, which has made it the country’s most successful film of all time, has offered a different and more ambitious idea.

The “ambition” didn’t come from nowhere. For thousands of years, “homeland” has had a soft spot in the hearts and minds of Chinese people. One old idiom that shows a strong feeling that Chinese people have had for their homeland is “luoyeguigen”, which means returning to one’s homeland in old age, like fallen leaves returning to the roots of their tree.

“What is Chinese sci-fi?” Guo Fan, the film’s director, said in an interview. “A vehicle that really expresses our cultural and spinal core can be called Chinese sci-fi. Otherwise, we’re just following others and telling the same Hollywood stories.”

And the makers of The Wandering Earth may have chosen the best time to tell its Chinese sci-fi story. The film was released on Feb 5, the first day of Chinese New Year. It was a time when many people had just made the hard journey back to their hometowns. So to them, there is only one possible way to tell the story. Earth goes wherever humans go, because it’s our home.

【1】The main purpose of the first paragraph is to ________.

A.give a brief account of the passage

B.warn people of the coming danger

C.explore ways to avoid the problem

D.introduce the topic of the film

【2】The underlined phrase “a different and more ambitious idea” refers to ________.

    A.fleeing the Earth in spaceships

    B.bringing in huge success

C.filling the gap in Chinese sci-fi movies

    D.helping Earth make its escape

【3】Which of the following is NOT the reason for the success of the film?

A.The rich imagination of the story.

    B.Hollywood-style space stories.

    C.The special cultural background.

D.The time chosen to release the film.

【4】What is likely to be the best title for the passage?

    A.Chinese Sci-fi keeps up

    B.Chinese Sci-fi backs down

    C.Chinese Sci-fi Sets a New Path

    D.Chinese Sci-fi Challenges Hollywood

  • 27、No one knows for sure when advertising first started. It is possible that it grew out of the discovery that some people did certain kinds of work better than others did them. That led to the concept of specialization, which means that people would specialize, or focus, on doing one specific job.

Let's take a man we'll call Mr. Fielder, for example. He did everything connected with farming. He planted seeds, tended the fields, and harvested and sold his crops. At the same time, he did many other jobs on the farm. However, he didn't make the bricks for his house, cut his trees into boards, make the plows, or any of the other hundreds of things a farm needs. Instead, he got them from people who specialized in doing each of those things.

Suppose there was another man we shall call Mr. Plowright. Using what he knew about farming and working with iron, Mr. Plowright invented a plow that made farming easier. Mr. Plowright did not really like farming himself and wanted to specialize in making really good plows. Perhaps, he thought, other farmers will trade what they grow for one of my plows.

How did Mr. Plowright let people know what he was doing? Why, he advertised, of course. First he opened a shop and then he put up a sign outside the shop to attract customers. That sign may have been no more than a plow carved into a piece of wood and a simple arrow pointing to the shop door. It was probably all the information people needed to find Mr. Plowright and his really good plows.

Many historians believe that the first outdoor signs were used about five thousand years ago. Even before most people could read, they understood such signs. Shopkeepers would carve into stone, clay, or wood symbols for the products they had for sale.

A medium, in advertising talk, is the way you communicate your message. You might say that the first medium used in advertising was signs with symbols. The second medium was audio, or sound, although that term is not used exactly in the way we use it today. Originally, just the human voice and maybe some kind of simple instrument, such as a bell, were used to get people's attention.

A crier, in the historical sense, is not someone who weeps easily. It is someone, probably a man, with a voice loud enough to be heard over the other noises of a city. In ancient Egypt, shopkeepers might hire such a person to spread the news about their products. Often this earliest form of advertising involved a newly arrived ship loaded with goods. Perhaps the crier described the goods, explained where they came from, and praised their quality. His job was, in other words, not too different from a TV or radio commercial in today's world.

【1】What probably led to the start of advertising?

    A.The discovery of iron.

    B.The specialization of labor.

    C.The appearance of new jobs.

    D.The development of farming techniques.

【2】The writer makes up the two stories of Mr. Fielder and Mr. Plowright in order to________.

    A.explain the origin of advertising

    B.predict the future of advertising

    C.expose problems in advertising

    D.provide suggestions for advertising

【3】In ancient Egypt, a crier was probably someone who ________.

    A.owned a ship

    B.had the loudest voice

C.ran a shop selling goods to farmers

D.functioned like today's TV or radio commercial

  • 28、   An early spring morning I woke up with a strange thought "Something's gonna happen." The weather was beautiful and the morning promised a perfect day. I was still in bed, enjoying the sun and fresh air. Suddenly, the phone rang. I got it and a strange voice said: "Good morning. Are you sleeping yet?"

She was standing in front of me, trying to tell me something.

At that moment I felt someone shaking me and saying: "Wake up, wake up. It's getting late. Wake up!"

I opened my eyes and saw my mother. What a pity! No fascinating young lady, no park, nothing. I jumped out of bed immediately and checked where my wallet was. Thank God! It was there. It had only been a bad dream.

  • 29、As online technology advanced, web sites, podcasts, and blogs became powerful sources of information that allowed everyone to stay updated on any subject imaginable. Although all of these information sources remain popular, there's a new king of media and it's online video.

There are many reasons why online video has increased suddenly over the past few years. The first is increasing data speeds. It wasn't until recently that people everywhere had fast enough online connections to enjoy high-definition (高清)videos. However, once faster Internet speeds were provided, people quickly fell in love with online videos. The second reason why online videos have become so popular is convenience. Watching videos requires less effort and energy than reading through paragraphs of text after a day of hard work. Videos also seem to provide more satisfaction, as people prefer to connect with people they can hear and see, as against the words of some author whom they know little about.

Advancing digital technology has also helped, as it has made sharing videos easier and more convenient than ever. High-powered smartphones and more affordable video cameras allow anyone to easily record an event or give a few comments about a scorching topic that is on their mind. Meanwhile, sites like YouTube, Vimeo, and Ustream allow users to quickly upload their videos and share them with friends, family, and the general public if they wish.

Last but not least, advertising. Companies have made it easy for people to get rewarded for creating popular videos. Some people with large enough fan bases can even make a very wealthy living by uploading a few videos every week.

The future also looks bright for companies who post online video ads. In fact, new software allows them to watch viewers' emotional reactions to their content through the users' webcams (网络摄像机).They'll be able to see whether users laugh, cry, or feel bored during videos, so they can adjust their ads. This should prove extremely helpful, as there will be millions of videos competing for viewers' attention.

【1】Why do some people prefer watching videos to reading after work?

A.It helps them review the news.

B.It helps them get information with relative ease.

    C.It provides them more information.

    D.It helps them save time.

【2】What does the underlined word "scorching" in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Unusual.

    B.Future.

    C.Hot.

    D.Social.

【3】How will the software mentioned in the last paragraph help companies in the future?

A.It will enable them to better understand what customers enjoy.

B.It will let more viewers see the advertisements they make.

C.It will cause viewers to create more popular videos.

D.It will make people like their videos.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Online Video:   The New King of Media

    B.Online Technology is Developing Fast

C.Online Video:   A New Advertising Trend

D.Online Technology is Closely Related to People

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Around the world, music therapy (疗法)is being used to treat different medical conditions and illnesses. Some of the ways people use music therapy are to reduce pain, such as in childbirth or during cancer treatments, or to stimulate brain activity after an injury. Music therapy has also been successful in aiding children to overcome disabilities. Children can move their bodies with the music and stamp along to the beat.

Why is music a useful therapy? Being comforting and relaxing, music stimulates our brains. We respond to the sounds of music emotionally and physically. The complexity of music (the different tempos, rhythms, melodies and harmonies) provokes (激发)the biggest response. Thus, classical music is most typically used for therapies due to complex sounds and patterns. Although rap or hip hop might be fun to listen to, ifs unlikely that such styles of music would produce the same kind of therapeutic effect. Playing a musical instrument rather than simply listening to music can also be therapeutic for some people, helping relieve stress and anxiety.

Have scientists been able to prove that music can heal diseases? Music has been shown to reduce pain by increasing the release of endorphins (内啡肽). Endorphins are the body's natural painkillers, and when we listen to music, our brains respond by releasing these natural painkillers. It has also been known to contribute to the brain development of the babies who have just been born and even babies still in the mother's womb. Certain types of music have also been found to lower blood pressure and slow a person’s heart rate. Many people are hopeful that music could replace the need for some medicines that are normally used to treat certain illnesses. At present, music therapy is used in a variety of settings such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, day cares, and schools.

Although music therapy is not yet considered a mainstream treatment, it is recognized more and more as a useful addition to traditional treatment. So next time you are feeling low or stressed out, put on some relaxing music and let the music heal you.
