26、 My teenage son Karl became withdrawn after his father died. As a single parent, I tried to do my best to talk to him. But the more I tried, the more he pulled away. When his report card arrived during his junior year, it said that he had been absent(缺席的) 95 times from classes and had six falling grades for the year. In this way he would never graduate. I sent him to the school adviser, and I even begged him. Nothing worked.
One night I felt so powerless that I asked God for help. “Please God, I can’t do anything more for my son. I’m at the end of my rope. I’m giving the whole thing up to you.”
I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. “I want to talk to you about Karl’s absences.” Before he could say another word, I choked up(哽咽)and all my disappointment and sadness over Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. “I love my son, but I just don’t know what to do. I’ve tried everything to get Karl to go back to school and nothing has worked. It’s out of my hands.” For a moment there was silence on the other end of the line. The headmaster seriously said, “Thank you for your time”, and hung up.
Karl's next report card showed a marked(显著的) improvement in his grades. Finally, he was even on the list of the best students at school. In his fourth year, I attended a parent –– teacher meeting with Karl. I noticed that his teachers were surprised because he had changed himself completely. On our way home, he said, “Mum, remember that call from the headmaster last year?” I nodded. “That was me. 27、TripAdvisor, a leading travel website, says it will no longer sell tickets to attractions where tourists come into contact with wild animals or endangered species. The policy (政 策) change includes, but is not limited to, elephant rides, “swim with” activities involving (涉及) the touching or riding of dolphins, and the petting of caught wild animals such as tigers.
The company also announces that it is developing an educational website, with the aid of several wildlife protection groups, to inform tourists about animal welfare practices.
“TripAdvisor’s new booking policy and education effort is designed as a means to do our part in helping improve the health and safety standards of animals, especially in markets with limited regulatory protections,” says TripAdvisor CEO Stephen Kaufer in a statement. “We believe the end result of our efforts will be enabling travelers to make more thoughtful choices about whether to visit an animal attraction and to write more meaningful comments about those attractions,” says Kaufer.
The company, which operates the Viator booking service, will stop selling tickets to some animal attractions immediately. The policy will be fully carried out when the educational website is ready.
As National Geographic reports, TripAdvisor has been under pressure from animal welfare groups to steer away from attractions known to cause animals mental and physical sufferings that can shorten their lives.
National Geographic adds, “When trained to carry visitors, elephants go through a ‘crush’, which often involves being beaten with nail-tipped sticks and kept in small cages. Tigers and lions often are drugged to make them safer for tourists to pet and take photos with. Dolphins trained for tourists to swim with are unable to hunt, move, and play as they would in the wild, which raises their level of stress and can result in strange behavior.”
Viator says for several years it has stopped travel bookings where wild animals are killed or injured for blood sports. TripAdvisor has also banned comments for businesses promoting attractions such as bullfights or captive hunts.

28、Best wedding speeches stay in our memory forever, marking the importance of the wedding day for everyone involved. It can be quite challenging to fit all the feelings you want to share into a single speech. Most times, a humorous speech is just perfect, because it works for all weddings. Let us share some tips.
For mother of the bridegroom (新郎). You’ll talk about his growing up and how he was well raised. You can also say something about the bride (新娘). Finish by how proud you are and how they are well made for each other. “The first time I saw you, it was love. My little baby grew into a wobbly toddler, and then a smart child. The preteen and teen years and the next thing I knew, you’ve become a man.”
For mother of the bride. Tell your daughter that she’s beautiful and strong. Talk about the good memories in her growing years. “It’s no news that we love our kids so much, and seeing them grow up is hard. Everything they do fills you with pride. Now I’m grateful and proud that she has found love in the bridegroom. May your marriage be long, happy, and peaceful together.”
For father of the bridegroom. Your son will be looking to you for support and wisdom for marriage. So, good wedding speeches from the father of the bridegroom can contain learning from each other. “My greatest blessing is having a son, one that mirrors me in many ways. But like his dream, he’s grown into his own person. My son will make an amazing husband. I wish you every best.”
For father of the bride. As the father of the bride, you have responsibilities to your baby girl. Give the young couple pieces of advice and your best wishes. "From me to you, I’ll tell you that a successful marriage requires falling in love many times and doing it with the same person always.”

29、 Today we know Antarctica as an extreme environment containing ice and snow. But new research provides evidence that the area had a rainforest in the past.
The researchers collected a piece of Earth sediment (沉淀物) from under the seafloor off the coast of Antarctica. In the sediment they discovered forest material that was estimated to be about 90 million years old. This would have been in the Cretaceous Period, when dinosaurs were the main land animals. The sediment was removed by scientists on the research icebreaker RV Polarstern in the Amundsen Sea near Pine Island Glacier.
Johann Klages is a geologist with the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research in Germany. He was the lead writer of a study on the findings, published in the journal Nature. He said the sediment was collected from a depth of about 30 meters below the ocean floor. Klages said an examination showed that the material didn’t form in the ocean.
The researchers estimate that the area—about 900 kilometers from the South Pole—had average yearly temperatures of about 12 to 13 degrees Celsius. During the warmest summer months, average temperatures likely reached between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. The soil included fine dirt particles (颗粒) and hard clay, as well as substances linked to at least 65 different kinds of plants, the study found. Klages added that the plants included trees, ferns and flowering plants. While no animal remains were found, Klages said there were likely dinosaurs, flying reptiles (爬行动物) and many insects in the environment.
The research represents new evidence of the major climate changes Earth has experienced in the past—and is currently undergoing today. The soil in the sediment dates back to the planet’s warmest period of the past 140 million years, with sea level about 170 meters higher than today. The researchers said that the rainforest environment in Antarctica was especially surprising because each year, the area experiences a four-month polar night when there is no sunlight to fuel plant life. Klages said no ice sheets were present during the time, but seasonal snowfall was likely.
【1】How did the researchers come to their findings?

【4】What is the main idea of the text?
