26、If you’re wondering when you might get the flu, a new study indicates you should keep an eye on your local weather report.
According to a research published in the Journal of Clinical Virology, if you keep your eye on the weather and watch for the first major dip in the temperature, you can essentially mark your calendar in prediction for an outbreak the flu.
To figure out how the weather and flu outbreak may be connected, researchers analyzed statistics of 20,000 people in an area over three seasons. The number of people who caught the flu was then compared with local weather data.
After each season, the team noticed one consistent finding: The first really cold period with low outdoor temperatures and low humidity (湿度) was always followed by a week of a mass influenza outbreak.
The researchers say that aerosol particles (气溶胶粒子) containing virus and liquid are more able to spread in cold and dry weather. So, in theory, if you sneeze or cough and the surrounding air is very dry, the air will absorb the moisture and the particles containing the virus keep spreading through the air for a longer period of time.
Luckily there are ways to keep off the illness regardless of the weather. Washing your hands, coughing into the crook (弯曲) of your arm and getting vaccine (疫苗) are the best ways to prevent the flu from spreading. People over the age of 65, pregnant women and young children are at the highest risk of developing complications (并发症) related to the virus, according to the CDC.

28、 Braxton Moral walked across the stage at his high school in Ulysses, Kansas, as a graduate. Soon after that, the 17-year-old marked another milestone(里程碑): receiving his degree from Harvard University.
Moral's parents got him admitted to the world-famous university when he was just 11. "My parents noticed I was bored in school and needed something to encourage growth, so they ended up finding the Harvard Extension School," he said.
"Most courses can be taken online, but Extension School students also must earn 16 credit(学分) hours in person in the school in Cambridge, Massachusetts," said Moral.
Studying for both high school and Harvard at the same time wasn't easy. But officials in his high school took a lot of the work off, allowing Moral to spend a few hours each day working on Harvard's coursework.
Moral has always been drawn to law and politics, and he's now hoping to go to law school. "I am, of course, excited to end this stage of my life and hungry to begin the next," he said.
Moral's older sister, Brittney Jo Seger, told reporters that her brother has always been gifted(有天赋的). "When he was little, his vocabulary was amazing" she said. "Something my mom, sister and I noticed early on was his memory. That's one of the things that make him unbelievable. He can look at anything or read anything, and he will immediately remember it forever."

29、 For as long as there have been gifts, we naturally make choices based on the recipient (接受者). But what if we have been wrong all along and we could turn things around, which not only made gift buying easier, but the recipient happier?
In 2015, psychologists Lauren Human and Lara Aknin conducted an online survey, which suggested that when people buy gifts, they prefer to choose something based on the recipient’s personality and tastes. Most people also said that they preferred receiving gifts bought with them in mind: gifts for them.
But Human and Aknin wondered if this approach to giving failed to take advantage of the way we connect as people. So they sent 78 volunteers into a shopping centre before Mother’s Day. Half were told to buy a card that “reveals (揭示) your knowledge of the recipient” while the others set out to buy a card that “reveals your true self”. After the purchase, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling emotionally closer to their mothers.
To find out how that approach goes down with recipients, the psychologists did another test, asking more than 100 students to choose a song on iTunes to give to a friend, partner or family member. Each half of the group received the same instructions as the card buyers. Results revealed that recipients of songs that revealed something of the givers felt closer to them than those who received gifts bought only with them in mind.
Human and Aknin suggest it might apply to all gifts. “If building stronger social connections is the underlying (潜在的) goal” of a gift and surely it should be — then we “may well be advised to offer more self-reflective gifts”. In short, for a present to be meaningful, you need to give away a bit of yourself, even if there is a risk that the gift might not so closely suit the recipient’s practical needs or tastes as one acquired purely with that in mind.
Moreover, giving something of oneself can be a safer act, the psychologists added. Because it reduces the risk of revealing poor knowledge of a recipient by attempting to buy something that fits their character — and failing.
But a note of caution here: what the research does not examine is the potential risk in repeated, unsympathetic giver-centered giving, which, according to Human and Aknin “could signal self-obsession”— and nobody wants to reveal that about themselves.
【1】From the Mother’s Day card test, we can conclude that _______.

We were three thousand miles away from home on a Random Acts of Kindness and Volunteerism Road Trip. We were short of money, so we had two goals today:
1. Try out our new “Smile!” signs and see how much kindness and joy we could spread in Pike Place Market.
2. Raise at least $80 by doing street performances. Singing, drawing or storytelling. This would be enough for gas to Portland and a small hotel room.
We weren’t sure how people would react to our signs. It’s so easy to walk past a busy crowd, lost in your own world, refusing to make eye-contact with strangers, and feeling alone despite being surrounded by hundreds of people just like you. Finally, I gathered courage to raise our signs and shouted, “Hi here!” to a young couple. They looked over, confused for a moment, read my sign and broke into smiles. Then we saw more smiling faces in the crowd.
Before long, our signs were wildly popular. Tourists wanted photos with us. Strangers stopped to ask us about our signs. We told them the story of our acts of kindness road trip and listened to their stories, too.
Sometimes I’d see unfriendly faces and feel particularly nervous to show them my bright sign. But I was always rewarded with a big smile whenever I did so. Suddenly they were no longer faces of strangers but those of neighbors and friends. This world is full of good people we just don’t know yet. We got so wrapped up in our wonderful “Smile! ” project that we forgot the other goal. Before we knew it,the sun was setting, and we had no money for our trip to Portland.
Paragraph 1: We sat down to watch a musician play the guitar while we thought about our second goal. _________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Our little band of five attracted a large audience.__________________________________________________________________
