26、Last week I was riding my special motorbike and then stopped at a convenience store. As I was getting my wheelchair off the back,a man watched me from his car and I noticed a wheelchair in his back seat.We spoke for a moment and I asked him about the wheelchair. He answered that it was for his daughter.“Well,do you think she would like to go for a ride on my motorbike with me?”I asked. He seemed shocked that a total stranger would ask him this.He thought about it for a second and said,“OK,as long as I can follow you.”

29、Generations of Americans have been brought up to believe that a good breakfast is one of life’s essentials. Eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have all been told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip.
But for many people the thought of food as first thing in the morning is by no means a pleasure. So despite all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures are available, the number of people who didn’t have breakfast increased by 33 percent-from 8.8 million to 11.7 million-according to the Chicago-based Market Research Corporation of America.
For those who feel pain or guilt about not earing breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies in the last few years indicate that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with not taking breakfast. “Going without breakfast does not affect performance,” said Arnold E. Bender, former professor of nutrition(营养)at Queen Elizabeth College in London, “nor doe giving people breakfast improve performance.”
Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better performance is surprisingly inadequate, and most of the recent work involves children, not adults. “The literature,” says one researcher, Dr. Ernesto Pollitt at the University of Texas, “is poor.”
【1】For those who do not take breakfast, the good news is that ______.
A. the missing of breakfast does no harm to one’s health.

Every year, Vargas and her dad go hiking. This summer’s trip was up Table Rock in the Grand Tentons in early December.
Vargas was just below the 11, 000-foot peak with her dad waiting about a mile down the trail when she met an injured English springer spaniel. She couldn’t find the dog’s owner and she figured it would be easier for her to carry the dog to safety.
“I had to crawl under him to get him up on my shoulders,”said Vargas, a single mother of three children from Idaho. “I felt the difficulty of it right away. I never felt 55 pounds like that before.”
Her dad, Ted Kasper, who took some photos when he saw his daughter coming down the trail with a dog on her shoulders. Dad laughed and said, “Isn’t this hike hard enough? You must carry a dog too?” Vargas recalled. “My dad made me laugh. He is such a great man.”
That sense of humor helped Vargas get through the difficulty of carrying the heavy dog down the trail. The hiking was hard and nearly unbearable at times. Every time Vargas put him down so she could rest, it was difficult. And every time she got down on her knees to put her head under his belly and tried to use neck and body strength to lift him, she was painful and it was hard.
“I thought we would see people on the trail on the way down to help. But that wasn’t the case.” she said. Kasper offered to run down the trail and try to find help, but Vargas didn’t want to be left alone.
About halfway down the trail, Vargas thought she might not be able to continue. At the time, it started to rain. “The thought of stopping crossed my mind once. My legs hurt and were shaking. My dad’s jokes made me laugh and it gave me energy. And feeling the dog’s breath growing faint was what encouraged me to continue,” she said.
Finally hiking six miles and reaching the bottom of the trail, Vargas found a very small note that said, “Lost dog named Boomer, call this number.”
