二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Growing old is something that happens to all of us. But often, older people seem “invisible” in society. Many people see them as physically weak, helpless or unable to contribute anything.

Starting in 1990, the United Nations has made Oct 1 of every year the International Day of Older Persons. It is a day to fight this stereotype (刻板印象) and raise awareness of issues faced by older people in society.

How do you feel about getting old? I chatted with my grandma to find out her opinions. Born in 1927, my grandma Solveig King grew up in Sweden during the Great Depression of the 1930s and World War Ⅱ. Everything was rationed (定量配给). There were no outdoor lights and no running water. “But it was a very happy childhood: snow every winter and always sunshine in summer, enough food, but no luxuries,” she said. This explains where she got her habit of keeping old boxes and containers and never wasting any food. It’s a habit many people of her generation seem to have.

In 2015, I went to live with my grandma for a few months. We would sit together and read books, go to the swimming pool, watch some travel programs or documentaries on TV, do some gardening, try some crossword puzzles, and then do it all again the next day. It was quite fun!

Now 96 years old and in a wheelchair, Solveig can’t go swimming any more, but she still keeps up with her other hobbies. “I don’t feel ‘old’, just a little disabled! But I never wish I could do something I know I can’t do. I remember one of my favorite teachers saying: ‘That is just wasted mental energy!’ Nor do I ever wish to relive any part of my life. I am very happy with the road I have taken.”

As for getting older and wiser, Solveig thinks wisdom comes with experience and reasoning, but not everyone is willing to take notice of it. And she keeps a curious and adventurous mindset. “Soon, I’ll need to go live at a nursing home for two weeks while my family is away. I’m excited because I’ll get to learn all about old people!” she said.

【1】What does Solveig think of her childhood?

A.It was filled with fear due to the war.

B.It was marked by food shortages.

    C.It was joyful despite hardships.

    D.It was poor and hopeless.

【2】What does Solveig think about her life?

    A.She longs to relive it.

B.She regrets wasting her mental energy.

    C.She feels upset about aging.

D.She is satisfied with her decisions.

【3】What does Solveig think is the origin of wisdom?

    A.Curiosity and open-mindedness.

    B.Experience and reasoning.

    C.Extensive reading.

    D.Formal education.

【4】Which of the following best describes Solveig?

    A.Funny and generous.

    B.Curious and positive.

    C.Creative and sociable.

    D.Friendly and patient.

  • 27、   The mirror self-recognition test was dreamed up in the 1960's by Gordon Gallup, Jr., a scientist now with the State University of New York. Back then, he was a graduate student taking a course in psychology, and the students were asked to come up with an idea for an experiment.

“I was washing my face in front of a mirror one day, says Grallup. It occurred to me wouldn't il be interesting to see if other animals could recognize themselves in mirrors?"

Still looking at the mirror, he realized he could test an animal by secretly marking its face with some kind of red dye (染料),to see if it could use the mirror to access these strange red marks.

No such test had been done before, even though people had long observed animals looking into mirrors. Most species tend to treat a mirror image as a stranger to be courted (献殷勤)or attacked. Some scientists thought that primates (灵长类)might do better. Charles Darwin once watched with interest as an orangutan (红毛猩猩)named Jenny made faces at a mirror.

When Gallup started doing experiments with chimps (黑猩猩).a few years after he came up with his test, he found that at first the chimps acted as if the mirror image were another animal. But then, after a couple of days they began using the mirror to examine parts of their bodies like their teeth.

When Gallup put red dye on their faces, the chimps later woke up and reacted to the unexpected mirror image as if they understood that the marks were on their own faces.

In Gallup s view, only three species have mirror self-recognition chimps, orangutans, and humans. Others, though, think the list is longer. Diana Reiss, a scientist at Hunter College, has tested both dolphins and elephants and believes that both show signs of recognizing themselves in mirrors.

1Who first came up with the idea of the mirror self-recognition test?

A.A university student. B.A zoo keeper in New York.

C.A teacher in Hunter College. D.A scientist in a research organization.

2What did Gordon Gallup intend the red dye for?

A.Marking his image in the mirror.

B.Marking his own face before washing.

C.Marking the face of the animal to be tested.

D.Marking an animal without self-recognition ability.

3How did chimps react to their image in the mirror?

A.They showed no interest in it.

    B.They examined that image carefully.

C.They took it as another animal al first.

D.They immediately recognized what il was.

4Which of the following have been tested by Diana Reiss?

    A.Orangutans. B.Chimps. C.Humans. D.Elephants.

  • 29、   Many times, the small things in life, which we often ignore, are more important than the ones that we consider far more valuable.1

In his song, Kenny Rogers tells the story of a wife whose husband loves her very much.2 According to her husband, the best way of showing his love to his wife is by providing her with all the wealth and comforts of life. Consequently, he works hard day and night and is thus not able to devote any of his time to her.

His wife, however, argues that this is not what she wants. All she wants for him is to show her more affection by giving her more of his time, caring for her and by expressing his feelings for her. 3

Although her husband loves her very much, his way of showing his love for her is creating distances between the two. 4

The main idea of “Buy Me A Rose” is that people who are closer to us deserve more sincere expression of our love, which may be found in smaller things in life. 5We should learn to express our feelings than to show our love through material goods. Express your love.

A.These are the things that she longs for in her life.

B.And as time passes by, the distance keeps increasing.

C.These are the big, flashy things that he has given her.

D.Spending time with them is a better way of expressing our love.

E.This theme is highlighted in Kenny Roger’s song Buy Me a Rose.

F.Spending more money on them is a better way of expressing our love.

G.However, she thinks that the way her husband shows her his love is not appropriate.
