26、   When my son was 11 years old, he got a small job helping out with a traveling carnival(嘉年华会)in our town. Do you know that their mom has to make all their clothes because it's so difficult to find anything to fit them? They're also really good cooks. Today, Joe, the one on the right, made me spaghetti（意大利面条）for lunch.”

What others see first in a person is not what a child considers important. Where I saw Siamese twins, he saw people having difficulty buying clothes that fit, and young men who were good cooks. It was a lesson I have thought about many times over the years.

27、   There are many gardening tips. Some suggest playing music for your house plants, having conversations with them, or even giving them a gentle touch now and then. Most of these practices are probably more for the benefit of the gardener than the garden, and generally harmless enough but except the last one. Your plants really dislike it when you touch them.

A new study out of the La Trobe Institute for Agriculture and Food has found that most plants are extremely sensitive to touch, and even a light touch can seriously affect their growth. “The lightest touch from a human, animal, insect, or even plants touching each other in the wind, can make a huge gene(基因) response in the plant,” Jim Whelan, who led the new study, said. “Within 30 minutes of being touched, 10% of the plant’s genome(基因组) is changed. This causes a huge loss of energy which is taken away from plant growth. If the touching is repeated, then plant growth is reduced by up to 30%.”

Whelan and his team are still trying to find out why plants respond, at the genetic level, so strongly. They do have some theories, however. We know that when an insect lands on a plant, genes are awakened preparing the plant to defend itself against being eaten ,” said Dr. Yan Wang, co-author of the study.

Until more research is done, it’s just a guess at this point. Still, the findings might already lead to new methods for how agriculturalists deal with their crops to best promote(促进) healthier growth.

It’s worth noticing that while the study found that plants often respond to just a single touch in negative ways, it’s really repeated touching that causes lasting unhealthy growth. That’s because the plants are looking for styles in the touching, to tell harmful touch from random touch. So it doesn’t matter if you accidently brush up against a bush during a walk through the woods.

28、   As COVID-19 continues to spread among humans around the world, conservationists（环境保护主义者）are warning of its possible danger to another group: Africa's endangered mountain gorillas（大猩猩）. Congo's Virunga National Park is home to about 30 percent of the world's mountain gorillas.

The park is closed until June 1 because scientists believe the gorillas may be able to catch COVID-19. Mountain gorillas can get some diseases that humans get. A simple cold can kill a gorilla，says the Worldwide Fund for Nature. That is why park visitors are not allowed to get too close to gorillas. Conservationists have welcomed the decision. Paula Kahumbu leads the Kenya-based conservation group WildlifeDirect. She says that “every possible effort must be made” to protect mountain gorillas because so few are left in the wild.

Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka is the leader of the Uganda-based Conservation Through Public Health. She noted a study done this year by her organization and Ohio University. She said the study showed that the rule separating gorillas and tourists was not effective.

Kalema-Zikusoka said the study showed that the seven-meter rule was useless almost every time a group of visitors entered the park. She said visitors were responsible for that about sixty percent of the time. In the other cases, it was the gorillas that moved too close to the humans.

Uganda has not announced a shutdown of gorilla park tourism. However, the number of visitors from Europe and other places has sharply reduced.

Mountain gorillas have been listed as endangered since 1996.But their population is now growing. Tourism brings much foreign money into Rwanda and Uganda. The money got from tourism is important in efforts to protect mountain gorillas. Officials can use it to help local communities. Some observers worry a fall in tourism during the COVID-19 crisis（危机）could endanger gorillas.

29、SANTA MONICA, Calif．(KABC)—A Santa Monica High School teacher who was put on leave after using physical force to control a student who was selling marijuana(大麻)in his classroom has received surprising support on Facebook．The incident was captured on video and has caused a sudden reaction from parents, teachers, students and even graduates．They are showing their support for Black．A Facebook page supporting “Coach Black” has over 4,700 likes．And many want him back in the classroom．

But in an email to parents, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Superintendent Sandra Lyon says the teacher’s behavior is “absolutely alarming” She put Black on leave during an independent investigation．

Lyon has come under fire from parents for initially saying the kind of physical action used by the teacher was unacceptable．On Saturday, Lyon released the following statement to Eyewitness News: “I want to stress that teachers are at times confronted with difficult, even threatening situations, and they must make judgment calls to protect safety．I want to emphasize that putting the teacher who was involved in this incident on leave until completion of an independent investigation is a matter of standard policy and practice; it in no way prejudices the outcome of the investigation．”
