  • 27、   An idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.

In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched the " If All of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.

In Chicago, the mayor appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighborhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character.

The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致)can be achieved. Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.

Ultimately, as Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.

【1】What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?

A.To invite authors to guide readers.

B.To encourage people to read and share.

C.To involve people in community service.

D.To promote the friendship between cities.

【2】According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?

A.In large communities with little sense of unity.

B.In large cities where libraries are far from home.

    C.In medium-sized cities with a diverse population.

D.In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached.

【3】According to Nancy, the degree of success of the project is judged by ________

A.the careful selection of a proper book.

B.the growing popularity of the writers.

C.the number of people who benefit from reading.

D.the number of books that each person reads.

  • 28、   Every year, billions of bars of partially used hotel soap are thrown away around the world. Those bars of soap finally end up in landfills, when they could be saving lives.

Worldwide, approximately 1.8 million people in underserved communities—including 1 in 4 children—die annually because of lack of access to soap and clean water. These heartbreaking statistics are what drove Hilton to launch a first-of-its-kind soap-recycling program.

The soap-recycling process starts with discarded soap that is collected from hotels and donated to a soap recycling center where it’s made into new bars and then donated to communities around the world. Not only are these new soap bars eco-friendly, but they also help prevent diseases and reduce death rates. Just one bar of recycled soap provides an estimated 180 handwashes.

Today, to mark Global Handwashing Day (October 15), Hilton is further expanding our life-saving program: Soap recycling will now be a brand standard in selected regions, with the program extending to include over 5,300 properties in more than 70 countries and territories.

Hilton’s role as a leader in soap recycling started back in 2009. Hampton Inn by Hilton in Orlando International Airport became the first hotel to donate discarded soap to Clean the World, which has since become the company’s largest soap-recycling partner. More of our hotels caught wind of the program’s success and began to recycle soap themselves.

As our founder, Conrad Hilton, once said: “To achieve big things, you must first dream big.” At Hilton, we are leading by example and making our dream of a cleaner world, a “greener” hotel industry and a more sustainable future a reality.

【1】What was the purpose of Hilton to start recycling soap?

A.To meet the need of the hotels.

    B.To clean the polluted water.

C.To reduce the waste of resources.

    D.To add financial benefits.

【2】What does the underlined word “discarded” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Thrown-away.

    B.Cleaned.

    C.Gathered.

    D.Discovered.

【3】Why did other hotels begin to follow suit?

A.They wanted to be the leader of hotel industry.

B.They were motivated by Hilton’s success.

C.They wanted to learn from Conrad Hilton.

D.They were determined to clean the world.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

  • 29、Owning a smartphone may not be as smart as you think. It may let you surf the Internet, listen to music and snap photos wherever you are…but it also turns you into a workaholic, it seems.

A study suggests that, by giving you access to emails at all times, the all-singing, all-dancing mobile phone adds as much as two hours to your working day. Researchers found that Britons work an additional 460 hours a year on average as they are able to respond to emails on their mobiles.

The study by technology retailer Pixmania reveals the average UK working day is between 9 and 10 hours, but a further two hours is spent responding to or sending work emails, or making work calls. More than 90 percent of office workers have email-enabled phones, with a third accessing them more than 20 times a day. Almost one in ten admits spending up to three hours outside their normal working day checking work emails. Some workers confess (承认) they are on call almost 24 hours a day, with nine out of ten saying they make work emails and calls outside their normal working hours. The average time for first checking emails is between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., with more than a third checking their first emails in this period, and a quarter checking them between 11 p.m. and midnight.

Ghadi Hobeika, marketing director of Pixmania, said, “The ability to access literally millions of apps, keep in contact via social networks and take photos and video as well as text and call has made smartphones invaluable for many people. However, there are drawbacks. Many companies expect their employees to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and smartphones mean that people literally cannot get away from work. The more constant in contact we become, the more is expected of us in a work capacity (容量).”

【1What can we conclude from the text?

A.All that glitters is not gold.

    B.It never rains but pours.

    C.Every coin has two sides.

D.It’s no good crying over spilt milk.

2The underlined word “accessing” in the third paragraph can be replaced by “________”.

    A.calling  B.reaching  C.getting D.using

A.The average UK working time is between nine and twelve hours.

B.Nine-tenths spent over three hours checking work emails.

C.One-fourth check their first mail between 11 p.m. and midnight.

D.The average time for first checking emails is between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. .

4What’s the main idea of the text?

    A.Workaholics like smartphones.

    B.Smartphones bring about extra work.

    C.Smartphones make our life easier.

    D.Employers dont like smartphones.

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

    The Boy and the Puppy

A farmer had some puppies and he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising (广告)the pups and set about nailing (钉)it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a pull on his overalls (工装). He looked down into the eyes of a little boy “Mister,” he said, “I want to buy one of your puppies.”

“Well,” said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat of the back of his neck, “These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money.” And with that he let out a whistle. “Here, Dolly!” he called.

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp(斜坡) ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence (篱笆). His eyes danced with happiness. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else moving inside the doghouse.

Slowly another little fur ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it rolled. Then the little pup began awkwardly shaking its body toward the others, doing its best to catch up. “I want that one,” the little boy said, quickly pointing to the little dog .

The farmer knelt (蹲) down at the boy’s side and said, “Son, you don’t want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.”

“Just that one.” With the answer, the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he showed a steel brace (支架) running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. It is obvious that the poor condition of the little fur ball also apply to the little boy.
