二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   These days, it seems like everyone wants to go out into space and live on new planets.Rather than depend on another pre-existing planet, could we make a new, proper planet ourselves?

To start with, if we do want to be living on it, we should find a good place in space to put the new planet. We’d want it to be in a habitable zone, meaning the planet should be at the right distance from its star to make sure there would be perfect temperatures and most importantly, liquid(液态的) water.

We’d also need the right materials to make the planet. Our Earth is made up of many different elements(元素). If we made our own new planet we’d probably want it to have similar elements and a similar structure(结构) We’ d also want enough water to form some oceans.

But even if we get all of the materials creating a new planet like Earth could have many troubles. It might be something more like a huge space station. It would be pretty expensive if we wanted it to be super big.

We would probably also need a lot of food since there s going to be many scientists and astronauts out in space working on this project!

According to NASA, each astronaut uses about 0. 83 kilograms of food per meal, including 0.12 kilograms of packaging(包装) material. Without the weight of the packaging material, we’d need about 780 kilograms of food just to feed one astronaut for a year.

Putting all these together could make it possible to make our own planet one day! In reality, creating a new planet would probably require a very modern technology and there would be tons of other things to think about. And if this is even possible, it likely won’t happen for a very long time.

【1】What's the first thing we should do if we want to create a new planet?

    A.To prepare enough food.

    B.To design its inner structure.

C.To find a proper place to set the planet.

D.To collect materials similar to our Earth.

【2】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refers to?

    A.Our Earth.

    B.Outer space.

    C.The new planet.

    D.The ocean water.

【3】How much food does an astronaut actually eat each meal?

    A.About 0. 12 kilograms.

    B.About 0. 71 kilograms.

    C.About 0. 83 kilograms.

    D.About 0.95 kilograms.

【4】What does the author think of creating a planet?

A.It is a waste of money and time.

B.It should be one of NASA’S next plans.

C.It is not a good idea for humans.

D.It won’t come true in the near future

  • 22、Rush hour traffic is a problem in many big cities around the world. Commuters (上下班者) rush to and from their jobs in cars, buses, subways, trains, and even on bicycles. Large cities in the United States have two rush hours –– one in the morning and one in the evening. But in cities in other parts of the world, there are four rush hours. In Athens and Rome, for example, many workers go home for lunch and a nap. After this midday break, they rush back to their jobs and work for a few more hours.

In Tokyo, there’s a big rush hour underground. Most of the people in Tokyo take the subways. The trains are very crowded. Subway employees called packers wear white gloves and help pack the commuters into the trains when the doors close. They make sure that all purses, briefcases, clothes, and hands are inside the trains.

In Seoul, many commuters prefer to take taxis to get to work. To hail a cab, many people stand at crossroads and raise two fingers. This means they’ll pay the cab driver double the usual fare. Some people even raise three fingers! They’ll pay three times the normal rate.

Streets in Rome are very crowded with automobiles and mopeds (摩托自行车) during rush hours. The city can’t make its streets wider, and it can’t build new highways, because it doesn’t want to disturb the many historic sites in the city, such as the Forum and the Coliseum. It took the city fifteen years to construct a new subway system. Construction had to stop every time workers found old artifacts and discovered places of interest to archaeologists (考古学家).

In many big cities, there are special lanes on highways for carpools. These are groups of three or more people who drive to and from work together. They share the costs of gas and parking and take turns driving into the city.

【1】Big cities have traffic problems during rush hours because there are_______.

    A.special lanes on highways

    C.four rush hours

    D.many cars on the street

    A.pay double the normal fare

    B.try to get a cab

    C.prefer to take taxis

    D.to stand at crossroads

    【4】Commuters in carpools probably______.

    A.live in the city

    B.take the subway to work

C.save money on gas and parking fee

    D.have special license plates (牌照)

  • 23、Knots are the kind of stuff that even myths are made of.In the Greek legend of the Gordian knot, for example, Alexander the Great used his sword to slice through a knot that had failed all previous attempts to unite it. Knots, enjoy a long history of tales and fanciful names such as “Englishman’s tie, ” “and “cat’s paw. ” Knots became the subject of serious scientific investigation when in the 1860s the English physicist William Thomson (known today as Lord Kelvin) proposed that atoms were in fact knotted tubes of ether(醚). In order to be able to develop the equivalent of a periodic table of the elements, Thomson had to be able to classify knots — find out which different knots were possible. This sparked a great interest in the mathematical theory of knots.

A mathematical knot looks very much like a familiar knot in a string, only with the string’s ends joined. In Thomson’s theory, knots could, in principle at least, model atoms of increasing complexity, such as the hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen atoms, respectively. For knots to be truly useful in a mathematical theory, however, mathematicians searched for some precise way of proving that what appeared to be different knots were really different — the couldn’t be transformed one into the other by some simple manipulation(操作). Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the Scottish mathematician Peter Guthrie Tait and the University of Nebraska professor Charles Newton Little published complete tables of knots with up to ten crossings. Unfortunately, by the time that this heroic effort was completed, Kelvin’s theory had already been totally discarded as a model for atomic structure. Nevertheless, even without any other application in sight, the mathematical interest in knot theory continued atthatpoint for its own sake. In fact, mathematical became even more fascinated by knots. The only difference was that, as the British mathematician Sir Michael Atiyah has put it, “the study of knots became a special branch of pure mathematics. ”

Two major breakthroughs in knot theory occurred in 1928 and in 1984. In 1928, the American mathematician James Waddell Alexander discovered an algebraic expression that uses the arrangement of crossings to label the knot. For example, t2-t+1 or t2-3t+1, or else. Decades of work in the theory of knots finally produced the second breakthrough in 1984. The New Zealander-American mathematician Vaughan Jones noticed an unexpected relation between knots and another abstract branch of mathematics, which led to the discovery of a more sensitive invariant known as the Jones polynomial.

    1What is surprising about knots?

    A. They originated from ancient Greek legend.

    B. The study of knots is a branch of mathematics.

    C. Knots led to the discovery of atom structure.

    D. Alexander the Great made knots well known.

    A. No other application found except tables of knots.

    B. The study of knots meeting a seemingly dead end.

    C. Few scientist showing interest in knots.

    D. The publication of complete tables of knots.

3According to the passage, ______ shows the most updated study about knots.

    A. t2-t+1   B. t2-3t+1

    C. Alexander polynomial   D. Jones polynomial

4Which one would be the best title for this passage?

    D. Knot VS Mathematics

  • 24、In 2016, I suffered from Seasonal Affective Disorder(SAD) a form of depression(抑郁症) that is found to make people feel low in the UK between September and April. During that cold and wet period, I got comfort in books.

Books have been used by many to reduce depression. I lose myself into them as thirstily as usually get my morning coffee. Each Christmas, I have a habit of returning to the old favorite books that make up for my emptiness, such as Jane Eyre. Sometimes, to escape from the cold, I run back to the heat that I am used to, so I will read a lot of books set in Africa.

It became important for me to find a way to escape my sadness in the world of books. And isn’t that what art and literature is for? According to JJ Bola, the author of No Place to Call Home, “The world can get you so down that you think you’re the only person going through what you’re going through.
