  • 21、   Do you know that junk food isn’t healthy? Of course you do! Do you eat it anyway? Of course you do! But a new study shows teaching adolescents about the ways food companies fool them into thinking junk food is cool can encourage kids to fight back—by eating healthier.

The pull of junk food can be super-strong. It’s designed to tasty; which makes eating well one of the great health challenges of our time. Everyone from doctors to the government has been trying to handle it. Yet we keep eating junk food.

Professor Christopher Bryan says, “Food companies want you to want junk food. ‘‘ They spend millions of dollars coming up with new ways to^ promote junk food consumption. They hire scientists to make new junk food almost irresistible. They might do this, for example, by adding more sugar. Rats fed junk food for six weeks will even walk across a floor that gives them electric shocks just to get more of such food.

Food ads often make unhealthy junk food seem healthy by featuring professional athletes, fit-looking pop stars and smiling, active teens. “We thought when the students learned this, it would matter to them,” Bryan says. He worked with 8th graders at a Texas school. Half of them got a lesson Bryan created. It focused on the ways junk food is advertised, or marketed. A second group received lessons that focused on health. These lessons informed students junk food is had, and that foods like apples or carrots are a better choice. The students learned a bad diet can lead to major weight gain, and that being overweight puts people at risk for serious diseases. They also learned how eating well now can keep you healthy when you’re older.

After the lessons, the kids in both groups were asked how they felt about junk food. Most didn’t have positive feelings about these unhealthy foods.

1Why does the author mention the questions in paragraph 1?

A.To express his doubts about junk food.

B.To promote the idea of healthy eating.

C.To describe the situation of junk food.

D.To introduce the topic for discussion.

2What remains a great health challenge to doctors?

    A.Making people do more exercise.

    B.Making people eat healthily.

    C.Making people lose weight.

    D.Making people prefer junk food.

3What message does paragraph 3 mainly try to convey?

A.What makes junk food almost impossible to resist.

B.What influences junk food can have on consumers.

C.How food companies try to get people to reach for junk food.

D.Why food companies promote the consumption of junk food.

4Which of the following words can best describe Bryan’s lessons?

    A.Shocking. B.Popular.

    C.Effective. D.Abstract.

  • 22、On a bright August morning, Bas Huijbregts found himself somewhere he never expected to be: in a helicopter surveying a small number of black rhinos in Namibia's Etosha National Park. As the chopper drew closer to the ground, Huijbregts focused on the task at hand: to mark each of the large mammals with a bright paintball splash.

Every year, during the dry season, park management and Namibia's government undertake a weeks-long operation to count all the park's rhinos. Given the vastness of the area, the count is done by air, and the animals are marked with paint to keep track of those that have already been counted.

Huijbregts, then the newly appointed manager of African species conservation at WWF, was passing through the park when he received an impromptu invitation to join in the count. Over the dinner, chief warden Pierre Du Preez asked Huijbregts if he knew how to play paintball.

“My answer was no!” recalls Huijbregts with a laugh. “I was so nervous. But it was the most amazing experience I've had with rhinos. It was sort of a boy's dream, a cowboy thing to do.”

Huijbregts's experience was all the more remarkable given that just 20 years earlier encountering a black rhino was incredibly rare—fewer than 2,500 individuals remained in eastern and southern Africa. Due to intense poaching, 96% of the population was wiped out between 1970 and 1990.

Today, black rhino numbers have more than doubled, thanks to concerted conservation efforts by the government, local nonprofits, and the communities who manage the land. Today, Namibia is home to the largest black rhino population, with Etosha being “the biggest stronghold in the country,” says Huijbregts. “They are a huge success story for the world.”

But rhinos in other parts of the world, are still critically endangered. That's why WWF, together with governments, communities, and other partners, is working hard to safeguard the remaining rhinos, expand their populations, and protect their habitats.

【1】Why did Bas Huijbregts fly in a helicopter?

A.To do a survey on a small rhino.

B.To enjoy the beautiful scenery of the park.

C.To keep track of all the mammals in the park.

D.The result of rhino protection in Namibia.

【4】Where can we probably find this text?

  • 23、   During the day we work and play and at night we sleep. Our bodies rest while we sleep. In the morning we are ready to work and play again. It is while we are asleep that our bodies grow most. When children feel tired and angry, they usually need more sleep. We can get our lessons better, and we feel better, too, when we have had plenty of rest. Boys and girls, eight or nine years old, need ten hours of sleep every night. Our bodies need plenty of air when we sleep. If we do not get enough fresh air, we wake up feeling tired. While in bed we must not cover our heads. If we do, our lungs will not get enough fresh air. If we open our windows at night, we can have plenty of fresh air. Cool air is better than warm air. Boys and girls must get plenty of sleep if they want to grow and be strong.

1Our bodies grow most while we are ________.

  • 24、The Beijing International Marathon has acquired a new name among some disappointed participants: Smogathon.

About 30,000 runners, many from other parts of China or abroad, awoke in the Chinese capital on Sunday to an orange sun glowing weakly through a dirty haze(雾霾). Some ran anyway. Some ran away. But no one cancelled on the advice of the organizers, the Chinese Athletic Association and the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports, because those organizations did not call it off. That has made participants call the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), which has approved the 26-mile, or 42-kilometer race, to set air quality standards in the future to avoid damaging the runners’ health. The association could not be reached by telephone on Sunday.

“Does the IAAF have guidelines?” asked Chas Pope, a British engineer who took part in the marathon on Sunday. “If they don’t, they should consider it,” said Mr. Pope, who has lived in Beijing for 11 years and runs several long-distance races each year. “It’s meant to be fun and good for your health,” Mr. Pope said of the marathon. “But in such air, it’s just ridiculous to be running,” he said. He abandoned the course. “Most of my overseas friends pulled out,” he said. “And quite a few of my Chinese friends too, but a lot didn’t. I think they don’t know as much about the health impact.”

Images on Twitter and Chinese social media showed Chinese runners wearing a variety of face protections, from light cloth masks to World War I-style gas masks. Still many completed the race without masks. “Today’s race should definitely have been called off or rescheduled,” said Zhang Kai, Beijing-based campaigner with Greenpeace East Asia. “What happened today to this sports even is just another reminder to the government that much remains to be done to China’s energy and industrial structure to solve pollution,” said Mr. Zhang. “If the battle against pollution is a marathon, it is now time to catch up on speed.”

In the end, the race was won by two Ethiopians: Girmay Birhanu Gebru won the men’s race in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 42 seconds while Fatuma Sado Dergo won the women’s in 2 hours, 30 minutes and 3 seconds, breaking Chinese women’s advantage of the race for the last 22 years.

The favored Chinese woman runner, Gong Lihua, told China News Net that the smog didn’t affect her too much but it interfered with many people’s ability to sweat, affecting their performance.

【1The underlined sentences “Some ran anyway. Some ran away.” mean _____________.

    A. Some runners who dropped out returned to run.

    B. Some runners gave up after running a short distance.

    C. Not all runners continued to run.

    D. Most runners quit the race.

【2Why did participants call the IAAF?

    A. To tell it the Beijing International Marathon was also named Smogathon.

    B. To appeal to it to set air quality standards in the future.

    C. To tell it the 42-kilometer race should be cancelled.

    D. To appeal to it to make some laws to prevent pollution.

【3Which of the following states does Chas Pope agree to?

    A. A dirty haze is harmful to health.

    B. Running in any air is good.

    C. The marathon in China should be cancelled.

    D. Friends should learn from each other.

【4Zhang Kai thinks the battle against pollution _______.

    A. will be the most urgent thing in China.

    B. should be got rid of immediately.

    C. is connected with China’s unreasonable energy and industrial structure.

    D. will remind all the Chinese to reduce pollution.
