21、Google's new camera, called Clips, is a small, smart device. It comes with a case that has a clip (夹子),but it’s not designed to be worn on your clothing. Most interestingly, it uses artificial intelligence to take photography out of your hands so it can capture moments on its own.
This roughly 2-inch by 2-inch camera, with a three-hour battery life and Gorilla Glass for toughness, is intended for candid moments, like when a child does something cute that may happen too quickly for you to pull out your smartphone.
Onboard the Clips device, it uses machine learning algorithms (计算程序) to help capture scenes. Those algorithms include face recognition. “Once it learns that there's a face you see frequently, it’ll try to get nice photos of those faces,” said Juston Payne, the device’s product manager. And they also want it to recognize facial expressions, which involved “training it to know what happiness looks like”. The Google team also trained it to recognize what not to shoot — like when a child’s hand is over the lens, or if it is tossed in a dark purse.
The only way to see the images is by connecting the camera with your phone, as it has no screen for viewing or editing.
Were people concerned it could seem strange? Yes, Payne admitted. But they said they addressed that by making it obvious what it is. A green light on the front signals that it is on. Besides, unlike a camera meant to monitor your home, it is not connected to the Internet.
“This product is only possible because of the way that silicon has advanced” Payne said, noting that it was only in the past year or so that they could squeeze the technology down into a device this size. Going forward, we’re likely to get more assistance from the artificial intelligence packed into our apps and gadgets.

23、 We’ve all heard the same warning: looking at your phone or another screen before bed is very bad for you. It may make it harder for you to fall asleep and prevent you from getting a good night’s rest. Most sleep doctors suggest turning off screens an hour before bedtime. The reality is that, for the majority of us, cell phones, tablets, or TVs are the last things we look at before we close our eyes. Our smartphones can sometimes feel like an extension of our bodies because we’re so physically connected to them. Screens in general have become such a prominent part of our lives that it can feel completely unrealistic to put them away earlier in the evening. But according to sleep doctors, it’s a smart idea to at least give it a try.
At night, your brain starts to produce a hormone called melatonin(褪黑色素), which keeps your circadian rhythm on track and helps you fall asleep, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Being exposed to bright light suppresses melatonin production, says Philip Richard Gehrman, a behavioral sleep specialist and associate professor of clinical psychology in psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. “Blue light has the strongest impact,” he adds, “and the types of LED lights used in most electronic devices are strongest in the blue part of the spectrum.”
Why is blue light particularly bad? Dr. Gehrman explains that the very specialized cells in the eyes that feed into our sleep system and circadian rhythms, called retinal ganglion cells, respond strongly to blue light in comparison to other types of light.
“Beyond the light you’re exposing yourself to, there’s also the simple truth that it’s easy to get caught up in what you’re reading or watching, which leads to staying awake a lot later than you should,” says Shelby Harris, clinical psychologist in private practice in New York. “Even if you’ve got the self-control to switch off Netflix after a reasonable number of episodes, depending on what you just watched or read, you may be too mentally stimulated to fall asleep anyway.”
【1】Which of the following best replaces the underlined word in paragraph 1?
A.important B.fun C.different D.major
【2】How does bright light “work” at night?
A.It will help us fall asleep very quickly. B.It will make our brain produce a hormone.
C.It will keep our circadian rhythms on track. D.It will affect the production of melatonin.
【3】What is special about blue light?
A.It has the longest effect on our sleep. B.It is mostly used in electronic devices.
C.It causes the eye cells to react greatly. D.It is the strongest one among all the lights.
【4】What can we learn from Shelby Harris’ words?
A.Self-control will help us escape the influence of television.
B.What we are reading and watching can help us sleep longer.
C.Light is the most important factor affecting our sleep quality.
D.What we watch or read before bedtime will influence our sleep quality.
24、A ban on smoking in public places has come into effect in China — home to a third of the world’s smokers. The move is aimed at controlling the number of deaths from smoking-related diseases, running at a million a year. But the rules have been criticized, because they do not include punishments for those who choose to ignore them. Many business owners hate rules that force them to ban smoking because many customers do not like the rules and complain. The rules do not allow smoking in places like restaurants, hotels, railway stations or theaters, but not at the office. Employers have a duty to warn staff off the dangers of smoking but do not have to forbid them from lighting up at their desks.
Shanghai introduced similar rules a year ago, but people do not seem to take much notice of them. Often you find people smoking at the next table while you are eating your meal or having a drink in a bar. The problem is that the rules do not include punishments for businesses or individuals who ignore them.
It appears that many Chinese people are unaware of the dangers of smoking. Research suggests that only one in four knows the harm cigarettes of second-hand smoke can cause. Officials say they have to try to persuade people not to smoke to reduce the numbers dying from smoking-related diseases. But it is hard to deal with the problem and there is still a long way to go.
【1】The number of smokers in China makes up about ______ of the world’s smokers.
A. 66% B. 44% C. 33% D. 55%
【2】Why have the rules been criticized by some people?
A. Because those people don’t want to be punished.
B. Because they do not include punishments for those who ignore the rules.
C. Because the rules are ignored by all the people who smoke.
D. Because nobody takes notice of the rules.
【3】What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. How to punish those who ignore the ban.
B. What the dangers of smoking are.
C. Why it’s hard to ban smoking.
D. How the non-smokers suffer from second-hand smoke.
