24、Holmes said, “Somebody sent a letter with five pips (桔核) in it from India, and arrived seven weeks later to kill John’s uncle. Then they sent five pips from Scotland and arrived three days later to kill John’s father. Now they have sent five pips to John from London!”
“The letters are all from sea ports (海港). The writer was on a ship when he wrote the letters,” I replied.
“Very good, Watson! And John’s enemy is in London already!”
“Well, I hope they won’t kill young John,” I said.
But they did. The next morning, we read in the newspaper that a policeman found him die near Waterloo station. Holmes was very angry about it.
“He came to me for help and those men murdered him! I’m going to find them, if it’s the last thing I do!” he said to me, and he hurried out of the house.
At night, when he came back, he was tired, but pleased, he said, “I know the names of John’s enemies! And now I’m going to send them a surprise! This will frighten them!” He took five pips from an orange and put them in an envelope (信封). On it he wrote “S. H. for J. C.”
“I’m sending the pips to captain James Calhoun. His ship is called the Star. He and his men are sailing back to Georgia, USA.”
“How did you find him, Holmes?” I asked.
“Ship’s papers,” he said, “I’ve looked at hundreds of them today. Only one ship, the Star, was in the three ports at the right times, this morning the Star left London to sail back to Georgia. I found out that the captain and two of his men, all Americans, weren’t on the ship last night, so I’m sure they killed John. Nowadays, we’re more wasteful than ever-buying, using and throwing things away without thinking about the costs. We need to deal with the waste wisely-but how? One answer is to upcycle. You might make soil (土壤) from food waste for gardening. Do you know you can use the same way to deal with old clothing? You just need imagination! Making new things out of old clothes is the best way to mix my talent and my interest. Do you upcycle? If so, what new things have you made? If not, why not give it a try? | |
Reply Terry Posted at 9:08 a.m. on 11th February Why don’t you give your old clothes to people in need? I even give away the most expensive things I don’t wear anymore. So I can help the environment while giving something useful to people in need. Reply Gina Posted at 9:28 a.m. on 11th February Good point! I’m talking about only the oldest clothing in your room-the clothes that are too old to be worn by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants and supermarkets. Before upcycling food, that can still be eaten, for example, using it to make soil. |

26、 Imagine a man who cannot read or write. Now imagine that same man creating a brand new alphabet (字母表). It sounds impossible, doesn’t it? Yet that is exactly what one man did—a man named Sequoyah.
Born around 1770 in America, Sequoyah was a Cherokee (切罗基人). Like other Native Americans (美国土著) of that time, he could neither read nor write. He noticed, though, how white people wrote to one another on pieces of paper. They often used these “talking leaves”, as some Native Americans called them, to communicate.
Back then, the Cherokee had no way to write down words in their own language. Sequoyah believed it was essential for the Cherokee to have a system of writing. So, in 1809, he set out to create an alphabet that the Cherokee could use to do just that.
Sequoyah started by drawing pictures, with each one symbolizing (代表) a different word or idea. He soon realized that writing sentences using pictures would be much too difficult. Sequoyah decided to try a different way. He began to develop symbols to stand for the sounds, or syllables (音节), that made up words. Twelve years later, he completed a system of writing with 86 different symbols. Each one stood for a different syllable in the Cherokee language. The symbols could easily be put together to form words. Soon thousands of Cherokee were able to read and write in their own language.
Sequoyah’s work did not end there, however. He helped to set up a print shop and began publishing (出版) a bilingual newspaper in both Cherokee and English. In later years, Sequoyah became a political leader (政治领袖) among the Cherokee.
Sequoyah died in 1843, but many Cherokee of today still use the alphabet he invented. Thanks to him, the Cherokee now have a written history that will never be forgotten.

27、 A team is a group of people with a common goal. A school’s football team has two goals. One goal is to win. That is what the team wants to do. The other goal is to build character. Character is what a person values, how a person gets along with others. That is why schools have football teams. They want to help students build good values.

Whether the team wins or loses, at the end of the game they congratulate the other team. That is called sportsmanship. While they fight to win during the game, it is just a game. They cannot be angry with the other team. If they are, they'll hear from their coach.
__________ makes sure the team reaches the school's goal. The coach cares about the whole team. The coach gives each player advice. When the team wins, everyone celebrates. And the coach is glad. But after the season is over, the coach is still happy. The coach gets to see the players as they go to school every day. The character they have built is part of their success in school, too.
Some coaches say that if you go into a classroom at their school you'll be able to tell the players. It is not that they are bigger than the other students. It is the ones who are helping other students work. Teamwork is part of their lives.
