24、There is a popular Chinese saying that “Fair skin (皮肤) will make up for three flaws (缺陷)”. This mentions the fact that in Chinese culture, it is believed that people who have fair skin are more beautiful. In Western culture, however, the opposite is true — many Westerners think tanned skin is prettier. The example shows that different cultures have different ideas of what they think is beautiful. These cultural meanings of beauty, however, are no longer important. As more and more people travel overseas, ideas about beauty are being shared among cultures. The Internet has also made it easier for people to share different types of beauty since people are always posting pictures on social media. The result is an ever-changing idea of what is considered beautiful.
The cultural practice of ear piercings (刺入), for example, has become a part of modern day culture. In Kenya, it is a tradition among the Marci men and women to pierce and then make their ear lobes (耳垂) longer using ivory and wood or stones. They then wear colorful things on their ear lobes. This is a common practice since longer ear lobes are seen as a sign of beauty. This tradition has now found its way into present-day culture. Nowadays, this might still seem unusual to some, but with more and more well-known actors and film stars showing off their longer ear lobes. it will finally become more fashionable.
It is understood that different cultures around the world have different ways of showing beauty. However, since we now live in a worldwide society, people’s views about beauty are always changing. With the help of the Internet, people are now able to easily borrow ideas from other cultures to help them stand out. So what new fashions can we expect to see in the future?

25、In China, many people are leaving the countryside to find jobs in the cities, because the countryside is much poorer than the city, and often there isn’t much work there. Services such as hospital and transport are usually much better in the city than in the countryside. They hope that their lives will improve when they move to the city.
But in the big cities of Europe like London or Paris, people are moving out of the city. These rich families want to live a quieter life. They are tired of the noise and the dirt of the city, and they are tired of the crowded streets, crowded trains and buses. They don’t want to live in the cities any more. They want a house with a garden in the countryside, and breathe the fresh air there.
So they move out of the cities. Some don’t go very far, just a little way out of the city, to the towns near the cities; other people move to the real countryside with sheep, cows and green fields. There, they start new lives and try to make new friends.
Not all those who move from the city to the countryside are happy. After two or three years, many people who have done this feel that it was a big mistake. They don’t make so much money and there isn’t much work to do. People in the countryside are very different and aren’t always very friendly.
As a result, quite a lot of people who have moved to the countryside move back to the city. “It’s wonderful to see crowds in the streets and cinema lights.” they say.
【1】Which is NOT the reason for people moving to the cities in China?
A. The countryside is much poorer than the city.
B. People in the countryside have nothing to eat.
C. People in the countryside don’t have much work to do there.
D. Services in cities are usually much better than those in the countryside.
【2】Why do some rich families in Europe move to the countryside?
A. Because they will find good jobs.
B. Because they are tired of living in the city.
C. Because they can make more money there.
D. Because they like feeding sheep and cows in the green fields.
【3】What’s right about the people who move to the countryside?
A. All of them feel happy.
B. None of them feel happy.
C. Only a few of them stay at the countryside at last.
D. Some people in the countryside always fight with them, so they hate the countryside.
【4】What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph show?
A. They are happy to move back to the city.
B. They miss their friends in the countryside.
C. They still want to move to the countryside.
D. They are tired of the noise and the crowded streets in the city.
26、
I Was Told I Can
About 6 months ago, I joined a gym. Every morning, there was one trainer who worked out at the same time as I did. He did his daily exercise with such a quiet determination(决心) that he made it all look effortless although I knew all too well how hard he was working.
A couple of weeks ago, I was watching him do chin-ups. I had never tried doing chin-ups before, but it looked so easy, so I asked him if I could try one. He eagerly stepped aside and encouraged me to try. I pulled myself up without thinking … once … then twice. I stopped because that was all I had in me, but he stepped up behind me and pushed me up for two more. It felt so good and I felt strong.
The next few days when I finished my workout, I would ask him to watch me do chin-ups. However, each time I could only do two. I was quite upset, but he told me that when he trained firefighters, men were required to do 5 chin-ups, and women were required to do one or two. Most people couldn’t do them at all, so he was amazed at what I could do. He further told me that if I practiced every day, I would be doing five or six in no time.
Because he told me I could, I didn’t realize how difficult it was. I was encouraged to try and I didn’t doubt it for a moment. I truly thank him for letting me believe that for me success is not only a possibility, but also a realistic goal that I can achieve.
