二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Is there a single word that motivates us more than “weekend”? It's like the promise of a sweet hereafter following what seems like a lifetime of toil (劳累). It's the spring in our step that gets bouncier with each passing day - until by Friday, we're practically bumping our heads against the ceiling.

The trouble is that the weekend is a rip-off. You think you're getting 48 hours of unconditional downtime, but reality takes a discount. In fact, it takes most of Sunday. That's when anxiety comes creeping in and another countdown begins: 12 hours until Monday. Sure, weekend is free time. But the mounting stress of an incoming Monday can erase any joy you might get from a Sunday evening.

That feeling is so common among the Monday-to-Friday crowd, there's even more than one name for it: the Sunday Scaries, or Sunday Fear Syndrome. Going from a countdown to the weekend to a countdown to Monday can be difficult. Even Monster.com - a website that specializes in yoking humans to the Monday-to-Friday cycle -admits it's a problem. In a survey, Monster found that 76% of Americans have “really bad” Sunday night blues.

For most people, Sunday is no holiday at all. It may all come down to the same problem: We can't stop thinking about tomorrow. Even worse, we may develop some downright unhealthy coping strategies for that transition from weekends to Monday. Some might resist - staying up late, milking every minute of a fleeting Sunday in the form of mind-numbing distractions.

But why should Monday cast such a long and fearful shadow on our lives? Maybe it's because the counter is reset, and the weekend, or happiness, seems at its furthest point. If, like most of us, you have a tolerable job, but don't much like the whole idea of working, there are plenty of ways to make Mondays a little less stressful. Most importantly, don't leave any unsettled Friday business hanging over the weekend. So, clear the decks and tie up loose ends.

【1】What do we know about weekend in paragraph2?

    A.It is hard-earned.

B.It doesn't bring joy as expected.

    C.It adds to people's anxiety.

D.It provides good time to relax.

【2】Why does the writer mention Monster.com in the text?

    A.To support his idea.

    B.To clarify a question.

    C.To show its popularity.

    D.To provide more information.

【3】What does the writer think of the way most people spend the weekend?

    A.Tolerant.

    B.Conservative.

    C.Practical.

    D.Unwise.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Why Monday Takes a Bite Out of Sunday

B.Why People Are Stressed Out on Fridays

C.Why a Countdown to the Weekend Is Difficult

D.Why Monday Casts a Fearful Shadow on Our Lives

  • 22、   Disease-carrying mosquitoes can spread diseases without affecting themselves. Nearly 700 million people get a mosquito-borne illness each year, which results in over one million deaths. Humans experience continuous pressures from disease-carrying mosquitoes in many parts of the world, so we have to find ways to fight against those insects because they keep getting scarier.

Even though DEET remains the most commonly used, and most powerful, mosquito repellent (防护剂) ever developed, scientists are actively pursuing effective products based entirely on plant oils. While DEET is an effective contact repellent, many people dislike the oily feel and smell on their skin, and sometimes some people are sensitive to it. Consumers are always interested in alternatives to DEET and other synthetic (合成的) repellents, so there are numerous natural repellents on the market.

In my lab at Iowa State University, my team and I have been conducting research on natural products as possible insect repellents for the past 20 years. In the past few years, three of my Ph. D. students have contributed greatly to our research by designing, synthesizing, purifying, characterizing and testing more than 300 closely related chemicals coming from the best of natural repellents like citronellol, menthol and thymol.

These students have successfully tested these repellents against three species of dangerous mosquitoes. The first group of the new repellents act through the air. These chemicals have a vapor action that provides protection. These are potentially most useful in backyards, parks, houses, barracks and horse barns. The other group of the new repellents are the classic ones that stop insects from standing on a treated surface, such as human skin, clothing or tents; some researchers have conducted testing on some humans to confirm the effectiveness and identify the very best ones.

The new repellents were designed and made from the natural materials in plant essential oils. They maintain many of the advantages of the natural repellents: They are fully biodegradable (可生物降解的), with no ecological concerns or environmental wastes, and generally considered safe like the thousands of types of plant essential oils used in the flavor and perfume industries. However, thorough testing will be conducted to determine if they are truly non-poisonous because there is still no enough evidence.

【1】What does the author mainly want to show in Paragraph 1?

    A.The way mosquitoes spread disease.

B.The high death rate of mosquito-borne illness.

C.The difficulty of fighting disease-carrying mosquitoes.

D.The urgency of finding tools to fight against mosquitoes

【2】What is a disadvantage of DEET?

A.It causes discomfort to the users.

    B.It greatly harms people's health.

    C.It can't be applied universally.

D.It won't be effective for long.

【3】What can we learn about the second group of the new repellents?

    A.They can kill mosquitoes indirectly.

B.They are mainly used in the open air.

C.They are more effective on human skin.

D.They can prevent mosquitoes from contacting users.

【4】What's the author's attitude to the new repellents?

    A.Disapproving

    B.Negative

    C.Objective

    D.Subjective

  • 23、   Educators today are more and more often heard to say that computer literacy is absolutely necessary for college students. Many even argue that each incoming freshman should have  his or her own microcomputer. What advantages do computers offer the college students?

Any student who has used a word processor will know one compelling reason to use a computer: to write papers. Although not all students feel comfortable composing on a word processor, most find revising and editing much easier on it. One can alter, insert, or delete just by pressing a few keys, thus eliminating the need to rewrite or re-type. Furthermore, since the revision process is less difficult, students are more likely to revise as often as is necessary to end up with the best paper possible. For these reasons, many freshman English courses require the use of a word processor.

Computers are also useful in the context of language courses, where they are used to drill students in basic skills. Software programs strengthen ESL(English as a Second Language ) instruction, as well as instruction in French, German, Spanish, and other languages. By using these programs on a regular basis, students can improve their skills in a language while proceeding at their own pace.

Science students take advantage of computers in many ways. Using computer graphic capabilities, for example, botany( 植物学) students can represent and analyze different plant growth patterns. Medical students can learn to interpret computerized images of internal body structures. Physics students can complete complex calculations far

more quickly than they could without the use of computer.

Similarly, business and accounting students find that computer spreadsheet programs are all but important to many aspects of their work, while students pursuing careers in graphic arts, marketing, and public relations find that knowledge of computer graphic is important. Education majors learn to develop grading systems using computers, while social science students use computers for analyzing and graphically displacing their research results.

It is no wonder, then, that educators support the purchase and use of microcomputers by students. A useful tool, the computer can help students learn. And that is, after all, the reason for going to college.

A.the ability to read and write B.the ability to use

    A.revise papers

3According to the author, the reason for students to go to college is _________.

A.to learn something B.to perfect themselves

C.to improve computer skills D.to make the best use of computers

4The main purpose of this passage is to _________.

A.persuade the educators to increase computer use in their own classroom

B.analyze advantages and disadvantages of computer use among college students

C.identify some of the ways that computers benefit college students

D.describe how computers can be used to teach foreign languages
