  • 26、Staying connected

When Central Bucks South became one of the first Philadelphia-area high schools to close because of the fear of novel coronavirus exposure in early March, 16-year-old sophomore Andrew Chen knew that things were not going to return to normal as quickly as some of his peers hoped.

But still, the change from seeing his friends on the swim team during daily practices to learning alone at home was jarring.

“I only have three years here at South, and it pains me to see one of them being wasted,” Chen said.

The coronavirus has changed everyone’s lives, but for students, the disruption feels particularly serious. Schools closed and graduation ceremonies were put off. Summer plans, such as camps, are up in the air.

But right now, many students are trying to stay connected, struggling with false information, and finding out the best ways they can help – through online method.

For Josh Harycki, 17, a senior student at the Shipley School in Philadelphia, the best way to help was to create a “social distancing promise” for young people.

“I saw a lot of young people not paying attention,” he said. “They were … still going out, hanging out with others. I thought that there had to be a way to reach younger people, who were possibly not watching the news.”

Harycki started a call to action on social media and then built a website with a map that followed and kept the locations of people who’d signed the promise. The site also shares links to accurate sources of information like the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Harycki knows that his peers are worried they can’t connected with their friends in the same way, so he created the social distancing promise to strengthen that although everyone might be physically distant, they’re still connected.

“Part of what we’re showing is that you might feel like you’re the only one taking this seriously, but our map shows that you’re not alone,” he said.

  • 27、The 33-year-old Australian, Bradley, is actually a student in international relations completing his PhD through Griffith University. He came to Beijing for a cooperative research at Peking University less than two   years ago. Such an academic life was just added color with a chance offered by the cultural exchanges project, “I’m in China”.

Bradley was lucky to win the most “likes” for his photo story about his life in China and became one of 20 winners to visit locations after a global recruitment (招募) by the project this summer. All the winners’ experiences were filmed to produce a reality show, My Chinese Working Day, which will be broadcast by mid-September. The film crew took them to many “amazing sites” and the staff taught them a lot about how to incorporate modern Chinese characteristics while still keeping traditional customs. “I would have to say two things stick out as the most memorable: the helicopter ride and talking with the staff at the hotel about how they organize weddings here in China,” he said. That was Bradley’s first time to be in a helicopter, and he was too absorbed with the awesome view of the beautiful coastline. “I think it is so important to show other Australians the different landscapes China has to offer. I think so many Australians, when they think about China, imagine the historical sites of Beijing and the exciting things to see in Shanghai but have no idea about other beautiful places, like Sanya or the many other places people have been taken to in this TV series,” Bradley said.

“I’m in China” is a project sponsored by China Intercontinental Communication Centre and other institutions under the guidance of China’s State Council Information Office. It invites foreign natives worldwide to experience unique jobs and participate in activities that one can find nowhere else except in China.

  • 28、   When we wake up feeling sleepy, many of us often think, “I’m going to go to bed earlier tomorrow!” But however determined we are, chances are that we don’t keep our promise. This behavior is called “bedtime procrastination (拖延症)”, and results from lack of self-control and our body clock, reported HuffPost.

According to a study carried out by several health psychologists at Utrecht University, bedtime procrastination is a common problem. In their study, 53%of the 2.400 participants said they didn’t follow their sleep schedule, delaying (延迟) it at least twice a week.

It’s found that they delayed bedtime not because they liked to stay up late, but they couldn’t stop doing other trivial (琐碎的) things. “People who have trouble controlling their use of cell phones, handheld computers and other electronic devices are also more likely to delay going to bed,” Floor Kroese, a psychologist at Utrecht University, further explained to HuffPost.

Yet, according to scientists, lack of self-control is not the only thing to blame. Our body clock also plays an important role. It was also found that those who get up late are more likely to postpone their bedtime than those who wake early every morning. And more surprisingly, might owls would go to bed late at the very beginning of the weekday, even though they had to get up early for work and school. It’s their special body clock that plays a part in delaying their bedtime, reported Popular Science.

People always think that bedtime procrastination isn’t a big problem, but as Kroese explained, “the choices we make that affect our sleep could turn out to be pretty important for our health.”

1What did the study carried out by Utrecht University find?

A.Bedtime procrastination is not a very common problem.

B.53%of the participants delay their bedtime on weekends.

C.Most people go to bed late because they like to stay up.

D.Lack of self-control is one reason for bedtime procrastination.

2What does Kroese think of bedtime procrastination?

A.Cell phones don’t cause people to delay bedtime.

B.Electronic devices are not to blame for staying up.

C.It is not a big problem in our daily life.

D.It has a great influence on our health.

3What does the underlined word “postpone” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.set up. B.put off.

  • 29、   My cousin is nine years old, a little bit fat and doesn't do really well at school. As the youngest in the household, she is heavily teased, and thus has developed some resistance and distrust towards adults, who usually don't put high hopes in her.

Yesterday we went to an art exhibition together. There were paintings from kids with disabilities. My little girl has keen eyes, for the paintings she liked most were also the best of the show. She also voluntarily helped to arrange the chairs and table for a sharing session, painted by herself alongside new friends while I attended the sharing, and cheerfully helped me to get my bag from another room, something that doesn't happen often at home as she's usually glued to her iPad.

We went to buy books together. I bought a book written by a mom telling about her journey with her autistic(自闭症的) son. On the bus back home, I briefly introduced the book to my cousin, and to my surprise she was truly interested. She kept asking me to tell more stories about this friend in the book who struggles with small things in life. This is the first time I've seen her so interested in a topic. Usually when she talks to me, she describes events at school and at home without a clear focus. I'm very touched that the life of an unknown stranger has found its way into this little girl's heart.

I'm very thankful for the power of books, for the beauty that my cousin showed to me, and for the time we had together. I pray that I can keep seeing clearly the wonderful things in her, so that whenever the not-so-kind world puts her down, I can remind her how truly wonderful she has always been.

1Why does the little girl have a bad attitude to some adults?

A.Because she doesn't do really well at school.

B.Because she is the youngest in the household.

C.Because the adults constantly make fun of her.

D.Because the adults don’t put any hopes in her.

2The underlined word in Paragraph Two can be replaced by .

    A.charming B.sharp

    C.loving D.pretty

3Whom does “an unknown stranger” in Paragraph Three refer to?

    A.The autistic son. B.The writer’s cousin.

    C.The mother. D.The writer.

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 1 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.

Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 2.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 3 supporting.

The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 4 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 5.

If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 6 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 7 of all resources.

And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 8 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 9 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 10 human being.

  • 36、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high1 — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an2 intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the3 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an4 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.

From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?

The answer is yes. The first artwork5 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its6 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.

Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.

Art is a way in which human 7 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 8 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain9 traits of old master paintings be called art?

For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as10. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.

Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.

It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

  • 37、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word. For the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

    My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

Polly, my stepmom, suggested the sweetest name to our pet dog: Mercy. We don't know why she gave the strange name. We soon learned it was just what this new dog would need.

My parents' bad tempered dog would jump out of bed and go-go-go all day long. So when they brought home a Christmas tree, they expected everything would be out of order. However, to their astonishment, Mercy didn't seem to take any care. She paid zero attention to the tree which suddenly grew in her living room. Nor did she react to the fancy presents under it, including a wrapped box of Milk-Bones.

Dad and Polly were quite careful; they'd never had a dog that didn't force them to move everything to higher ground as if they were expecting a flood. But Mercy seemed to take no notice. He didn't take any glance at it at all.

A few days before Christmas, Polly awoke early in the morning as usual. She passed the dusty living room and then stopped in surprise. Glancing back into the room, she saw that every last present was gone. Only the tree was still there.

Had they been robbed? Why hadn't Mercy barked? Where was she? Had the robbers taken her away? Polly noticed scrap of ribbon(丝带) on the floor, then bit of torn wrapping paper few feet away, some lights beyond that. The clues all made a mark leading toward the back door.

Polly put on the switch, bathing the backyard in light. The perpetrator's(肇事者)head lifted and froze. Alarm and guilt made her eyes wide. Oh, yes, it was Mercy.

She lay under her favorite tree in soft nest of shredde(碎片) wrapping paper, chewed-up boxes, and curling(缠绕) bits of ribbon. Presents, unpacked from their packages, were spread over everywhere. Beautifully wrapped boxes had gaping holes. Pieces of paper were mixed with the last remaining evidence of gifts. All the gift tags(标签) that could have been used as thank-you cards were destroyed.

    Clearly Mercy's self-control had failed.

    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

As for Thank-you cards, Mercy provided the answer.
