Our contests gave me something I could control. And maybe I gave her the same.

In my eightI grade, there was Jenny, who had a small horse named Red Wing. The eighth grade was a terrible year. We both knew it, but we didn’t talk about it. We spent most of our time with Red Wing. On cold winter days, we’d go out and take turns riding and walk. She left in  the ninth grade and I missed her.

To JulieI'll be forever grateful. We met on the beach in New Jersey one afternoon. She was there with her twin boysthe only other children thereand they were about the same age as my daughter. Graduallythe children approached each other and soon were digging holes together. And we began to talk. She lived in the little beach town. I lived alone with my daughter in a big apartment a block from the beach. My husband had taken off for North Da- kota, leaving me to think about what to do next. Suddenlythere was someone I could talk to. For the next couple of weekswe met at the beach with the childrenand I would go home with her. Meeting Julie filled my despairing heart.

  • 28、WHAT are scientists? They are often described as gray-haired white-coated dull scholars.

But the world has changed. Young scientists are making their voices heard and releasing their powers on the world stage.

This is also true in China. Rising stars include new materials expert Gong Yongji, university professor Liu Mingzhen, and biologist Wang Ruixue. At the age of 28 in 2018, Wan Ruixue received the 2018 Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists. This is a global prize to reward outstanding scientists at an early stage of their careers.

She focuses mainly on biomedicine(生物医学)and artificial intelligence(人工智能). "Both are cutting-edge(前沿)technologies at an early stage of development," she said.

"So, I think they have great potential to be developed. I think in the study of cutting-edge technologies, China and other leading countries in the world are standing on the same starting line. And in the study of structural biology, China is likely to become the leader."

She felt it was her fate to become a biologist. "I grew interested in the natural world, when I was very young," she said. In 2009, she entered Sun Yat-sen University.

In her third year at the university, she realized that she wanted to do something related to biomedicine. So she emailed China's top biologist Shi Yigong, hoping to join his lab at Tsinghua University.

Shi recognized her talent and welcomed her. Years of efforts at the lab have paid off. Her research on the high-definition 3D structure of spliceosome led to a scientific breakthrough.

Unlike-many of other young scientists who choose to pursue further study abroad, Wan currently has no plan to go overseas.

"The whole ecosystem for scientific research is continually improving in China," she said, adding the country has great science facilities.

  • 29、   Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of cars, lots of traffic jams (阻塞)and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes (废气).So the city began a scheme (计划)to improve the situation.

Under the Velib scheme “ Velib” comes from velo liberte, or “ bicycle freedom” people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you do not return it after 30 minutes , you have to pay. it's only €1 a day or €29 a year! The bicycles are heavy25 kg , and they are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 subway stations!

Paris is not the first city to have a scheme like this. But not everybody thinks it is a great idea. One Parisian said, "These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they wont use a bicycle - they'll still use their cars."

A city spokesman said, “The bicycle scheme will not settle all our traffic problems, of course. But it might help reduce air pollution. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. There are not any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities. But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise, so the problems in our environment will get worse. The bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too."

1What can we learn about the Velib scheme?

A.It owns more stations than the subway.

B.It aims to make traveling easier.

C.Its bikes are light and colorful.

    D.Its bikes have no baskets.

2If you use a Velib for one hour, how much should you pay?

    A.€30. B.€30.

    C.€ 29. D.€1.

3Why do some people disagree with the Velib scheme?

A.The cost is rather high. ,

B.It is hard to find a Velib station.

C.It is not suitable for a long journey.

D.The distance between two Velib stations is long.

4What's the city spokesman's attitude towards the bicycle scheme?

    A.Doubtful. B.Positive.

    C.Uncaring. D.Worried.

Everyone has their own unique fingerprint; 【1】 makes fingerprints an ideal way to unlock smartphones. However, this may be 【2】 (safe) than we think.

Scientists at New York University and Michigan State University in the US have developed a set of fake fingerprints. They say that the prints 【3】 unlock any fingerprint-enabled smartphone up to 65 percent of the time.

  • 35、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word. For the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

    My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

Smell the flowers before you go to sleep and you may just end up with rosy dreams. Have a whiff of rotten(腐烂的)eggs during the night and your dreams may be1(pleasant). So says researcher Dr. Boris Stuck, 2invited sleeping volunteers to a rose vs. rotten egg test in the University Hospital Mannheim in Germany. • 40、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Reading a book and watching a film are two very different experiences, but it’s normal to have high expectations when a film of a favourite book is made. There are very many times I have been disappointed by a film of a book I love. The films can be adapted from classic novels, short stories, comic books and stage plays, as well as non-fictions, even those written by ghostwriters. All can work well, but why do many adaptations fail with both cinema audiences and critics?

A key question is obviously how close to the original the film is. Since a typical film is only around two hours long, it becomes a question for the screenwriters to decide what to leave out and how to write the dialogue. Sometimes there may be changes to the plot, additions, and even different endings. I, like many people, have often left the cinema feeling “the film is not like the book”.

Another problem is the cast. Finding actors acceptable to film audiences can mean the difference between success and failure. Readers have their imaginations about how characters look and sound. This is where I think many film adaptations fall down.

Some books are just too difficult to film for technical reasons, although movies like The Life of Pi are very successful. CGI (Computer Generated Image) technology has had a huge impact on the movie industry. It allowed the previously unfilmable to become a reality.

One may think that it is the book writer who is in the best position to do film adaptations. In fact, this can actually be a bad thing because they may be too close to the material and find it difficult to adapt. Also, some writers have been very unsatisfied with the film versions of their work. Roald Dahl and Stephen King are examples of this. For me, anyway, it is always a bad idea to watch a film of a book you love.
