二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Running and walking both offer their own unique benefits and risks. Here is something you need to know about the pros and cons (利弊) of each type of exercise - and which is best for your health goals.

●Running is better for weight loss than walking.

Both walking and running can help you lose weight. 【1】. A 2008 analysis found that people only lost small amounts of weight — about 0.1 pound per week — by walking. On the other hand, a large 2013 study found that people lost significantly more weight by running than walking.

    ●Walking is safer than running

【2】, it makes you face a greater risk of injury than walking. In fact, walking has less than a third of the injury risk of running. About 60% of runners will experience an injury that prevents them from doing the activity.

    【3】 ?

Overall, both walking and running can help you achieve the recommended amount of exercise. There is no right choice for which is better for your health. Rather, deciding between walking and running depends on your unique goals and risk factors. For example, if you are older or have joint problems, walking may be the better option for you. However, if you’re pressed for time, running might be the more practical choice.

    ●Try the run-walk-run method.

The run-walk-run method involves alternating between running for a certain amount of time and walking for a set number of minutes. For example, you can run for two minutes and walk for one minute, or run for four minutes and walk for one minute. 【4】

After reading what is mentioned above, you may be able to choose the right type of exercise now. 【5】, what matters is that you make the time to exercise. It’s also important to always challenge yourself to be healthier.

    A.Then repeat the cycle

    B.Choose to walk or run

C.How to keep a balance between them

D.However, running may be the better choice

E.Whether you favour walking, running, or both

F.While both running and walking are beneficial for you

G.Because running means you’re going at a relatively faster pace

  • 22、Former South African President Nelson Mandela who was treated for a recurring (复发的) lung infection, dies on Dec. 5th, 2013, at the age of 95.

People around the world are mourning the loss of the country's first black president. He was often called humble, charming, loyal person and a man who cared about others.

“He seemed to have that special charismatic(有魅力的) personality,” said Herman Cohen, U.S. assistant secretary of state for Africa from 1989 to 1993. “He became the symbol in the fight against apartheid.”

Mandela was born on July 18, 1918. As a young man he became active in the anti-apartheid movement and joined the African National Congress, or ANC, in the 1940s.

The white-led government banned the ANC in 1960, but the group continued to operate secretly. Mandela became head of the group's new military wing, coordinating a sabotage campaign against South African military and government targets.

In 1962, he was arrested and put on trial for his actions and sentenced to life in prison on Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town. He spent 18 years there, refusing a government offer to release him if he would renounce the ANC's armed struggle. But he was freed in 1990 after South African President Frederik de Klerk legalized all political parties and discharged most political prisoners.

Shortly after his release, Mandela was elected president of the African National Congress. And in 1994, when the ANC won South Africa's first all-race elections, he was inaugurated (就职) as the county's first black president at age 75.

“Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another,” he said.

President Mandela said he would stay for only one five-year term. Cohen says Mandela earned international respect for South Africa's national reconciliation.

“Mandela devoted himself mainly to rallying the Africans to this new era to work on economic development, having good education, also he was very much of a spokesman on the international scene.” he said.

In 1993, Mandela shared the Nobel Peace Prize with his once bitter enemy F.W. de Klerk for their contribution to the peace process in South Africa. After receiving the award, Mandela praised the South African people.

“All have created a society which recognizes that all people are born equal,” he said. In a country torn apart by years of racial conflict, Nelson Mandela is considered a remarkable leader -- a man who turned South Africa away from violence and hatred into a country of greater peace and understanding.

    C. 6 years   D. 19 years

【3】What is the author’s attitude in the passage?

    A. negative B. positive

    C. subjective D. neutral

【4】Why was his bitter enemy F.W. de Klerk awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Mandela?

    B. F.W. de Klerk was one of Mandela’s friends in the early years.

Birthdays often involve surprises. But this year's surprise on the birthday of the great British playwright William Shakespeare is surely one of the most dramatic.

On April 22, one day before his 441st birthday anniversary, experts discovered that one of the most recognizable portraits of William Shakespeare is a fake. This means that we no longer have a good idea of what Shakespeare looked like. “It's very possible that many pictures of Shakespeare might be unreliable because many of them are copies of this one,” said an expert from Britain's National Portrait Gallery.

The discovery comes after four months of testing using X-rays, ultraviolet light, microphotography and paint samples. The experts from the gallery say the image —commonly known as the “Flower portrait”— was actually painted in the 1800s, about two centuries after Shakespeare's death. The art experts who work at the gallery say they also used modern chemistry technology to check the paint on the picture. These checks found traces of paint dating from about 1814. Shakespeare died in 1616, and the date that appears on the portrait is 1609.

“We now think the portrait dates back to around 1818 to 1840. This was when there was a renewed interest in Shakespeare's plays,” Tarnya Cooper, the gallery's curator (馆长), told the Associated President.

The fake picture has often been used as a cover for collections of his plays. It is called the Flower portrait because one of its owners, Desmond Flower, gave it to the Royal Shakespeare Company.

“There have always been questions about the painting,” said David Howells, curator for the Royal Shakespeare Company. “Now we know the truth, we can put the image in its proper place in the history of Shakespearean portraiture.”

Two other images of Shakespeare, are also being studied as part of the investigation and the results will come out later this month.________.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

“There’s our guide,” I said to the bus driver. He stopped and opened the door to let me off. “You must be Becky.” she said.”My name is Anne.”

As the tour director for a group of forty-three. I quickly confirmed with Anne the sites we would like to see during the next four hours: the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the White House. Most importantly, we discussed when and where to let everyone have a break. It was not a simple matter for so many people. Then we climbed aboard to begin our tour of Washington D.C..

After introducing Anne to the busload of waiting tourists, I handed the microphone to her and made my way toward the last seat. The conversation with a guide usually ended there since she stayed busy engaging guests. My job was to ensure nobody got lost. But on that day, we managed a brief chat in the shade of a tree by the lawn.

“Where are you from?” Anne asked.” Alabama. Are you from Washington.D.C.?” “Well, I live here now, but I was born in Ohio,”she said.“ I was born in Ohio, too.” “Where did you grow up?” she asked in surprise. “ Middletown,” I answered. “Me too!”“Why did you leave home and come here?” I asked. “My father is an orthopedic(骨科的)doctor and he came here for further study……” “An orthopedic doctor? Sorry to interrupt you, but what’s your father’s name?”I felt like I couldn’t breathe at the moment. “Edward Cooper,” she answered. “ Mr.Cooper! My doctor’s name was Edward Cooper,”I said. “That’s really my dad!”Anne exclaimed.

My parents had told me a story. I was born without the left arm, and my left leg turned inward. Then an orthopedic doctor placed a cast from my hip to my tiny toes magically. Thankfully, my leg straightened out and grew strong. By ten months, I could take my first steps.

    Paragraph 1:

At the time of the joy, however, my parents dreaded the final bill for the months of orthopedic care.

    Paragraph2:

The doctor who showed such great kindness to my family was Anne’s father.
