二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、It’s certainly not unusual to see groups of footballers gathering at sports centres around the country, readying to kick a ball around, but look again and you’ll see that many of them are more mature than you first thought. Created as recently as 2011, and mostly played by those aged over 50, walking football is a sport still in its infancy.

For the uninitiated(外行人), it’s football, but maybe not as you know it. The game certainly isn’t as slow as you might imagine. One foot has to remain on the ground at all times, so the ball has to be moved with accuracy, players having to find space to receive the pass. Often players are restricted to three touches of the ball before releasing it as a mechanism to cut down on any running. The rules are further slightly changed to ensure there’s minimal contact between players with no tackling from the side or from behind.

Andy Fairburn is a regular at the sessions. Now in his early-seventies, Andy finds the game still has plenty to offer him.

“I’ve been playing football since I was about 16, mainly Sunday League and then playing indoor five-a-side with work teams and then starting here. Getting older, your knees are knackered, your hips start to hurt, and I’ll know when it’s time to stop, but I’ve still got some time left to enjoy it. I am still competitive, though, and old habits die hard. What I’ve enjoyed most is the friendship and meeting new people. We’ve all become friends. We talk about all kinds of things.”

For many who thought football was finished for them as a participation sport due to fitness and age, it’s far from the case. Walking football is a sport played by those who’ve never kicked a ball before through to those skilled enough to play for their country, often on the same pitch. The game may be growing faster than its participants are allowed to move, but it’s never too late to enjoy the thrill of kicking a ball around with like-minded people.

  • 27、Honey is not only a good source of natural sugar; it is also delicious. Most people and many animals like eating it. Unless people build beehives, however, the only way for them to get honey is to find a wild bees’ nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper - a little bird called a honey guide.

The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the bees’ honeycomb. The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees’ nest. So when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, constantly waiting for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey and the wax always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.

Scientists do not know how the honey guide digests the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a local beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives.

If a person follows a honey guide to a nest, the bird is especially sure of getting a good share. Tribesmen in Africa are very grateful to the honey guide for leading them to good sources of honey, but they are also afraid of the little bird. They believe that if they do not open a bees’ nest and leave some honeycomb for the honey guide, the next time the bird cries to them through the forest, it will lead them to a snake in revenge. So they should consider the share of the honey guide seriously.

【1】What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.What living habits the honey guide has.

B.Where the honey guide finds the honeycomb.

C.Why the honey guide gives a loud cry in the forest.

B.the honey guide often flies inside the bees’ nest

C.the honey guide probably has a good sense of smell

D.scientists did some research on the honey guide’s digestion

【3】What does the underlined part in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.In punishment.

    B.In reward.

    C.In vain.

    D.In doubt.

  • 28、Pitch(音高)refers to how high or low a sound is. In tonal(音调的)languages, such as Mandarin, pitch is very important. These languages use different pitch patters to give meaning to words. In Mandarin, a word like “ma”, for instance, may mean “mother” or “horse”. Knowing which it means will depend on how it was spoken. The English language, on the other hand, uses different ways to change the meaning of a word, instead of pitch.

Expert Sarah Creel did an experiment to study Mandarin speakers’ sense of pitch and Mandarin’s influence on speakers’ learning music. Creel conducted the experiment with kids from China and America. During the experiment, the children were asked to listen to pairs of sounds. Then they reported whether the sounds in a pair had been the same or different. Some paired sounds were exactly alike, while others were slightly different. Some, for instance, had differences in pitch. And other pairs had the same pitch but were played by different instruments.

Both groups did equally well at identifying(识别)pairs of sounds from different instruments. But the Chinese kids were much better than the Americans at picking pairs of sounds having different pitch patterns. In a second trial, Creel ran the test with younger kids. Again, the Chinese children performed better at sensing pitch. This finding is important because the sense of pitch can influence a person’s musical ability. Creel’s study shows kids speaking Mandarin are more likely to have better musical ability than the ones speaking English. The finding probably applies to other tonal languages, too.

After the experiment, Creel said, “Both language and music contain pitch changes, People’s ability to process pitch in language and ability to process pitch in music may be carried out in overlapping(重合的)brain areas. If so, experience with language pitch processing should affect musical pitch processing.”

Scientist Fan-Ganz Zeng studies how hearing works in the brain. Zeng says Creel's study is “unbelievable”. “But, the advantage in sensing pitch in music that the Chinese children showed can be easily overcome by motivation, experience and training,” he adds.

【1】What’s special about Mandarin according to Paragraph 1?

A.It is the oldest tonal language.

B.It has four different pitch patters.

C.It allows people to tell apart words by pitch.

D.It has pitch patterns similar to those of English.

【2】What eau we learn about the result of Creel’s experiment?

A.Chinese may be easier to learn than other languages.

B.Tonal languages may help their speakers learn music.

C.Age may play an important rule to identifying pitch.

D.Americans may be fonder of music than Chinese.

    【3】What do Fan-Gang Zeng’s words show?

A.Chinese children have inborn advantages in music learning.

B.Working hard is the key to increasing musical ability.

C.Music leaguers should try in learn Mandarin.

D.Creel’s study deserves the public’s doubts.
