二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   In the UK, people have a reputation for being somewhat lazy when it comes to learning a second language. However, our research suggests learning a new language is beneficial to our brain.

To put language learning to the test, my colleagues and I teamed up with Dr Thomas Bak, a professor, and Antonella Sorace, a leading expert in language, both from the University of Edinburgh. We recruited 20 volunteers who had never tried to learn Spanish before and enrolled them on a language course taught by Lingo Flamingo, a non-profit organization.

Over four weeks, our volunteers attended classes three times a week, for two hours at a time, and had homework to complete. Before and after the course, they undertook cognitive(认知的) tests measuring attention, memory and mental flexibility. Volunteers had also been carefully selected according to their age so that we could compare the effect of language learning on older and younger people.

After the four-week course, there was an overall improvement for everyone in the cognitive tests. However, when we looked at the two age groups, the older participants had improved more than the younger ones. This is consistent with previous research, which showed that language learning led to improvements regardless of age, and that older people could improve even more over the same period of time.

The other interesting thing discovered in our experiment was that these improvements did not depend on how good our volunteers were at speaking Spanish. In the four weeks when we ran our study, none of our volunteers became fluent, but they did practice regularly, and this was enough to give them the cognitive benefits. This reinforces(加强) what Thomas and Antonella have found in other research—that practice is more important than proficiency, and that consistent practice means the cognitive benefits are maintained.

What's more, as well as offering cognitive improvements, there are other benefits that learning a new language can offer, both to our social life and our confidence.

【1】What can we know about the 20 volunteers?

A.They couldn’t speak Spanish before the study.

B.They are from the University of Edinburgh.

C.They attended the course three hours a week.

D.They paid much money for language learning.

【2】Why were the volunteers chosen according to age?

A.To compare different people’s learning abilities.

B.To see the effect of language learning on two age groups.

C.To make it convenient for teachers to instruct them.

D.To guarantee they can communicate more easily.

【3】What mainly contributes to cognitive improvements according to the study?

    A.Confidence in language learning.

    B.Excellent fluency in Spanish.

    C.Language learners’ social life.

    D.Regular language practice.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.Learning a new language improves your brain.

B.It is possible to learn a new language at any age.

C.The elderly benefit more from language learning.

D.Cognitive abilities are improved through learning.

  • 27、Finally, the long-awaited flying car is almost here.

AeroMobil, a Slovakian company, plans to start selling its creation, the AeroMobil3. 0, in 2017. The company claims on its site that the vehicle “transforms in seconds from an automobile to an airplane" by using “existing infrastructure created for automobiles and planes."The vehicle is petrol-powered and has wings that fold, which allows it to be parked like a car, though it is nearly 20 feet long.

The company's website features a video where the AeroMobil 3. 0 drives out of a hangar (飞 机棚 )and goes down a highway, sharing the road with ordinary cars until it arrives at an airstrip. The car then unfolds its wings and takes off from a stretch of grass, rather than a paved tarmac (柏油路面), and flies through the air like any other small airplane.

AeroMobil spokesman Stefan Vadocz said his company hasn't decided on an exact price because it's not ready yet."The prototype is a work in progress," he said in an email. But he said the price would be several hundreds of thousands of euros---somewhere in between a sports car and a light sports aircraft.

The vehicle seats two people---the pilot and a passenger---and its single propeller (螺旋桨) is located at the rear of the plane. The company said the car's top speed on the road is at least 99 mph and while flying it is at least 124 mph. It can fly for 435 miles before running out of fuel. It has a steel framework and carbon coating and is powered by a Rotax 912, a four-cylinder (气缸) aircraft engine from BRP of Austria.

Flying cars aren't exactly new. The concept has been around since long before The Jetsons popularized the idea in the 1960s. It has been a regular topic in Popular Science ever since World War I ace, Eddie Rickenbacker, wrote about it in 1924.

But getting a practical, reliable flying car off the ground has been a serious challenge.

Glenn Curtiss discovered this in 1918 when he developed the Curtiss Autoplane. It turned out to be more of a hopper than a flyer, so it failed to become popular with the public.

【1】What allows the AeroMobil3. 0 to be parked as a car?

    A. Its steel framework and folding wings.

    B. Its petrol-powered engine and folding wings.

    C. Its 99mph top speed and petrol-powered engine.

    D. Its ordinary car engine and folding wings.

【2】What is the biggest difference between the AeroMobil 3. 0 and other airplanes?

    A. It is powered by aircraft fuel.

    B. It can fly as fast as airplanes.

    C. It has a propeller.

    D. It can take off from a stretch of grass.

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. The AeroMobil3. 0's price will fall very soon.

    B. The design work on the AeroMobil 3. 0 is still in progress.

    C. The price of the AeroMobil 3. 0 will be higher than a light sports aircraft.

    D. The price of the AeroMobil 3. 0 will be the same as a sports car.

【4】What is the main purpose of the fifth paragraph?

    A. To describe some of the features of the AeroMobil3. 0.

    B. To explain why the AeroMobil3. 0 is better than an airplane.

    C. To explain the difference between the AeroMobil3. 0 and other airplanes.

    D. To explain why the price of the AeroMobil 3. 0 is high.

  • 28、Some birds are masters of crime (犯罪). That means these species steal food from other birds and get away with it. Scientists have long wondered what these birds have in common. A new study suggests that big body size does not predict bad behavior. Instead, it is the size of the birds’ brains that matters most.

To learn more about what makes some birds tend toward a life of crime and how they steal food from other birds, scientists analyzed 856 published reports of thieves. Researcher Julie says she started the project after watching birds steal dry dog food out of unattended bowls. She read about some dramatic examples of thieves, including birds that steal food from others flying in midair or bending through the sky. She learned that members of some species disturb other birds until they spit up food in their mouth.

Families that steal also tend to eat fish, mice, and other vertebrates (脊椎动物) instead of just insects. These meatier (多肉的) meals are hard to catch, and they deliver lots of valuable calories, so they are tempting to steal.

Finally, birds that steal tend to have big brains in relation to their bodies. That may seem surprising, since human bullies (欺凌弱小者) are often thought to be stronger in size.

But for birds, stealing isn’t about strength. It takes a clever brain to get food out of another hungry bird’s claws, especially if that bird is bigger than you are.

【1】The best title for the passage can be _______.

    A.Diet Habits of a Feather

    B.Hunting Skills of a Feather

    C.Brains of a Feather

    D.Thieves of a Feather

【2】What is the key factor of the birds’ stealing food?

    A.Body size.

    B.Living environment.

    C.Brain size.

    D.Mouth length.

【3】It can be inferred from the passage that _____.

A.birds’ stealing isn’t related to their environment

B.for birds, stealing is about cleverness and tricks

C.birds steal food only from those that are smaller in size

D.birds that steal have small brains for their bodies

  • 29、You're rushing to work and a man ahead of you falls down on the sidewalk. Do you stop to help? In a study of by-standers, it was found that some people keep on walking.

"There is a tendency to decide that no action is needed," says a psychologist, "In order to take action, you have to work against them." Here are some common thoughts that stop you from helping.

●Why should I be the one? I'm probably not the most able person in this crowd. You might think someone older or with more medical knowledge should offer assistance.

●What if he doesn't really need my help? The fear of embarrassment is powerful; no one wants to risk looking foolish in front of others.

●No one else looks concerned. We can follow the people around us, but most people tend to hold back their emotions in public.

"If you spot trouble and find yourself explaining inaction, force yourself to stop and evaluate the situation instead of walking on," says the psychologist. "Then retry to involve other people; you don't have to take on the entire responsibility of being helpful. Sometimes it's just a matter of turning to the person next to you and saying, 'It looks like we should do something.' Or asking someone if an ambulance has been called and, if not, to call for one. Once you take action, most people will follow you."

1According to a study of by-standers, what will some people do when a man ahead falls down on the sidewalk?

    A. They will call 110.

    B. They will offer help.

    C. They will go on walking.

    D. They will laugh at him.

【2】 Which is NOT the common thought that stops you from helping others?

    A. I'm not the very capable person.

    B. It looks like we should do something.

    C. No one else is concerned.

    D. He doesn't really need my help.

【3】 In order to offer your timely help, you need to .

    A. go directly to the police station

    B. get along well with the passers-by who spot the trouble

    C. ask others for help and call the police

    D. work against the first thoughts that stop you from offering help

【4】The main purpose of the passage is to tell readers   .

    A. to give others a hand

    B. to be more able

    C. to explain their inaction

    D. to evaluate the situation

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、DirectionsRead the following passage and fill in the blanks to complete the summary. No more than eight words for each blank.

The school that is changing American education

Two years ago, I visited a school in Brooklyn called P-TECH, the Pathways in Technology early college high school, which seemed very much like the future of education to me. It knitted together educators and job creators, giving kids not only a high school degree, but a two-year associate degree and a job guarantee at one of the country’s top blue-chip firms, IBM.

The latest great national leap forward in secondary education was during the post W.W. period, when state governments decided that high school education, previously optional, should be compulsory in order to ensure the kind of skilled workforce needed to compete in a new, higher tech industrial era. Now, many leaders---including the President, the education Secretary, scores of blue-chip CEOs and executives, and most top educators---believe we’re once again at such a turning point. When it comes to high school, an increasing number of them buy into the idea that not only should educators and job creators b e much more closely connected, but that as Stanley Litow, the IBM executive behind the program puts it,“six should be the new four.”The push for all American kids to have a post high school future, like Tennessee governor Haslam’s recent calls for two years of free community college for every student in the state, seems to come almost daily.

The statistics support it. A Four-year high school degree these days only guarantees a $15 an hour future. According to projections by the Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown University, the U.S. economy will create some 47-million job openings in the decade ending 2018, but nearly two-thirds will require some post secondary education. The Center projects that only 36% of American jobs will be filled by people with only a 4-year high school degree---half of what that number was in the 1970s. What’s more, the cost of not trading up educationally could be disastrous---workers with an associate degree will earn 73% more than those with only a high school diploma.

Many leaders maintain that children should 1 and that high schools should 2. The idea is based on 3. On one hand, more jobs will require 4. On the other, an associate degree will ensure 5.
