26、I believe that writing is the most important invention in history. It is the most important for two reasons. First, it helped governments and businesses work better. Second, it helped ideas to spread.
Writing was invented by the Sumerians around 5,000 years ago. 【1】 One example is The Code of Hammurabi. It was a list of laws written on a huge stone block for all to see. The law was written down, so every person knew what the law was. They knew what would happen if they broke it.
The Sumerians also wrote down rules about their government. The rules described how the government should work. 【2】 The rule said that the worker would have to pay a fine. This made the government act more responsibly.
The Sumerians also wrote down business contracts (合同). That’s because a contract explains what both sides promise to do. Written contracts helped the Sumerians run better businesses. This helped their civilization to grow.
【3】 It was an epic poem (史诗) called The Epic of Gilgamesh. The work is about more than just two friends on an adventure. It is also about life and death, happiness and sadness. It’s full of big ideas about the world. When the Sumerians wrote these ideas down, they spread. As a result, the Sumerians could study and talk about these big ideas. 【4】 Writing helped the Sumerians become great thinkers.
As you have read, writing helped the Sumerians become a great civilization. 【5】 That is why writing is the most important invention in human history.
A.They could also improve these ideas.
B.Writing continues to improve our lives today.
C.They used writing to make their government work better.
D.The Sumerians also created the world’s first written story.
E.Writing is so common to us that we hardly think about it.
F.The writing of the Sumerians further developed to include sounds and meanings.
G.One rule explained what would happen if a government worker didn’t do his job well.
27、For more than twenty years, scientists have been searching for signs of life on other planets. Most of these searches have been done over the radio. The hope is that someone in outer space may be trying to get in touch with us.Scientists also have sent radio and television messages on spaceships traveling through space, on the chance that someone may be receptive to such messages.
Scientists are using powerful radio telescopes to listen to signals from about 1, 000 stars, all within 100 light years of earth. In addition, they will scan the entire sky to "listen" for radio messages from more distant stars.Using a computer, they will be able to monitor more than eight channels at one time.Scientists are looking for any signal that stands out from the background noise.
Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy(银河星系), scientists find that five percent are like our sun.Perhaps half of them have a planet like earth.Such a planet would be a reasonable distance from the star for temperatures to be right for the evolution of life.Based on the inhabitable (that can be lived in) planets in our galaxy, most scientists agree that chances are likely that one or more of these planets support some life.
However, many scientists wonder whether intelligent life exists on other planets. Some believe that twenty years of searching without any intelligible messages shows that no one is out there. They say that the evolution of intelligence comparable to ours is unlikely.
Other scientists believe that our search hasn't been long enough to rule out the possibility that intelligent life exists in our galaxy.Although our sun family is only about five billion years old, our galaxy is about 20 billion years old.In that time, some scientists think it is likely that civilization (文明)much more advanced than ours have developed.Perhaps these civilizations send us no signals; perhaps we have not recognized the signals they have sent us.If we hope to find intelligent life, these scientists believe that we have to keep looking.
【1】According to the passage, how many planets in our galaxy might be inhabitable?
A.5 billion.

D.100 billion
【2】The first paragraph in this passage is mainly about .

【3】The underlined word "monitor" in the passage means" ___ ".
A.find
B.change

29、If there is no difference in general intelligence between boys and girls, what can explain girls’ poor performance in science and math?
It has been suggested that girls do not take math courses, not because they are difficult, but for social reasons. Girls do not want to be in open competition with boys because they are afraid to appear less feminine (女性的) and attractive (有魅力的).
However, there are still more high-achieving boys than girls when taking math exams. This difference appears to be worldwide. Biological explanations have been offered for this, but there are other explanations too.
Perhaps the difference which comes out during the teenage years has its roots in much earlier experiences. From their first days in kindergarten, boys are encouraged to work on their own and to complete tasks. Facts show that outstanding mathematicians and scientists have not had teachers who gave answers.
Besides, there can be little doubt that teachers of math and science expect their boy students to do better at these subjects than their girl students. They even appear to encourage the difference between boys and girls. They spend more time with the boy students, giving them more time to answer questions and working harder to get correct answers from them. They are more likely to call on boys for answers and to allow them to take the lead in classroom discussion. They also praise boys more frequently. All of this seems to encourage boys to work harder in science and math and to give them confidence that they are able to succeed.
Such a way of teaching is not likely to encourage girls to take many math and science courses, nor is it likely to support girls who do. When it comes to these subjects it seems certain that school widens the difference between boys and girls.

Good Neighbours
After school one winter day, Jack asked his mother to allow him to go out and play in the snow. “Sure, you can. Remember to put on your coat and your hat and your gloves,” his mother said. “You can build a snowman before your father comes home.”
“I’m going to need a carrot for the nose,” Jack said. “And I’ll need some things for the snowman’s hat and face.” Jack got a bucket and collected everything he needed to decorate his snowman. His mother promised she would watch him build the snowman from the window.
Outside, in his front yard, Jack started with a very small ball of snow. He got on his knees and rolled the snow into a big ball. At another window, someone else was watching Jack play. It was his new neighbour Naoko. Naoko asked her mother if she could go outside and join Jack in building his snowman. Naoko’s mother agreed and promised to watch her from the window. “You can play until your father comes home,” her mother said.
Naoko ran outside to Jack’s yard and asked if she could help him finish his snowman.
“Yes, please help me,” Jack said. “I have built my snowman’s body with two snowballs. I need to roll one more for my snowman’s head.”
“But snowmen only have two snowballs. One is for the body and one is for the head,” Naoko said.
“No, snowmen always have three snowballs,” Jack said. “I don’t think I need you to help me after all.”
Jack picked up some snow and made it into a small snowball. He got on his knees and rolled the snow away from Naoko to make the snowman’s head. Naoko walked back into her own yard and began to build her own snowman.
Jack made a hat for his snowman with his bucket (桶). He used his mother’s sewing (缝) buttons for the eyes and mouth. Lastly, he added a carrot for the snowman’s nose. Seeing his snowman, Jack was happy when suddenly a terrible thing happened. The head fell off the snowman and crashed to the ground! “Oh, no! My snowman fell apart,” Jack said, “and my father is almost home!”
