26、 One day while trying to print all the class worksheets we needed for the day, I found myself shouting at my printer in front of my son. “Why won’t this stupid thing print?” I shouted. My son came up to me quietly, saying, “Calm down, Mommy. Maybe if you don’t shout at the printer, it will work. You need to have patience.”
He was right. I needed patience-patience with this whole situation. I stopped myself, realizing this was not the behavior I wanted my son to see. He was also right that I needed to calm down. Just like what I told him to do, I took a few deep breaths and walked away from the collapsed printer. Later that day when we were outside, I tried to keep the sense of calm I had slightly achieved. Once I blocked out all the anxiety over the virus, school, and my work-I found the afternoon peaceful and pleasant. I played flying disc with my son, simply enjoying each other’s company while the birds sang. It was an everyday moment I’ll never take for granted again.
From then on, things got a little easier. I started to give myself, and everyone else, some favour. I stopped holding myself to my perfectionism standards with every little thing because they were truly impossible to keep to.
With that favour, I changed my focus. Getting every school worksheet done correctly is not important. Neither is cleaning the house. And, apart from getting fired, neither is my work. Spending time with my family, and staying healthy emotionally and physically, became my main concerns. We took walks. We danced our hearts out during the Disney Family Sing-Along. We got up early and walked secretly into our backyard with telescopes to bird watch. Who knows, birding may be the new hobby we’re never giving up.

27、There is one language that is used in every country in the world. The people who use it are young and old, short and tall, thin and fat. It is everybody’s second language. It is easy to understand, although you can’t hear it. It is sign language.
When you wave to a friend who is across the street, you are using sign language. When you smile at someone, you are saying, “I want to be friendly”, but you are not using speech. You are using sign language. When you raise your hand in class, you are saying, “Please ask me. I think I know the correct answer.”
Babies who can’t talk can point at things. They are using sign language. A policeman who wants to stop traffic holds up his hands. He is using sign language.
Many years ago, a French priest, Charles Michel de Epee, became interested in education for deaf people. He invented a finger alphabet(字母表). It is still in use. People can make the sign for letters and spell words with their hands, and deaf people can read and understand them. Soon there were schools for the deaf in many countries. The only university for the deaf is Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C.
Today, in the United States, there are special TV news programs for deaf people. The newsreader tells the news in sign language. At the same time, the words appear on the TV screen.
The actors in the Theatre of Deaf don’t spell every word. Sometimes they use hand signs. When they put two hands together, it means sandwich. They can make a roof with them when they want to show a house. One finger in front of an actor’s mouth can mean quiet. You can talk to people who are behind windows that are closed. And when you go swimming with your friends, you can have conversations under water.
How many hand signs do you use every day?
【1】What will you do if you want to express the idea that “I am very friendly” to someone?

B.The importance of sign language.
C.A famous priest in France.
D.Ways to use sign language.
28、Federal efforts to aid minority businesses began in the 1960’s when the Small Business Administration (SBA) began making federally guaranteed loans and government-sponsored management and technical assistance available to minority business enterprises. While this program enabled many minority entrepreneurs to form new businesses, the results were disappointing, since managerial inexperience, unfavorable locations, and capital shortages led to high failure rates. Even 15 years after the program was implemented, minority business receipts were not quite two percent of the national economy’s total receipts.
Recently federal policymakers have adopted an approach intended to accelerate development of the minority business sector by moving away from directly aiding small minority enterprises and toward supporting large, growth-oriented minority firms through intermediary companies. In this approach, large corporations participate in the development of successful and stable minority businesses by making use of government-sponsored venture capital. The capital is used by a participating company to establish Minority Enterprise Small Businesses Investment Company or MESBIC. The MESBIC then provides capital and guidance to minority businesses that have potential to become future suppliers of customers of the sponsoring company.
MESBIC’s are the result of the belief that providing established firms with easier access to relevant management techniques and more job-specific experience, as well as substantial amounts of capital, gives those firms a greater opportunity to develop sound business foundations than does simply making general management experience and small amounts of capital available. Further, since potential markets for the minority businesses already exist through the sponsoring companies, the minority businesses face considerably less risk in terms of location and market fluctuation. Following early financial and operating problems, sponsoring corporations began to capitalize MESBIC’s far above the legal minimum of $500,000 in order to generate sufficient income and to sustain the quality of management needed. MESBIC’s are now emerging as increasingly important financing sources for minority enterprises.
Ironically, MESBIC staff, which usually consist of Hispanic and Black professionals, tend to approach investments in minority firms more practically than do many MESBIC directors, who are usually senior managers from sponsoring corporations. The latter often still think mainly in terms of the ‘social responsibility approach’ and thus seem to prefer deals that are riskier and less attractive than normal investment criteria would allow. Such differences in viewpoint have produced uneasiness among many minority staff members, who feel that minority entrepreneurs and businesses should be judged by established business considerations. These staff members believe their point of view is closer to the original philosophy of MESBIC’s and they are concerned that, unless a more careful course is followed, MESBIC directors may revert to policies likely to re-create the disappointing results of the original SBA approach.
【1】According to the passage, the MESBIC approach differs from the SBA approach in that MESBIC’s ________.
A.seek federal contracts to provide market for minority businesses.
B.encourage minority businesses to provide markets for other minority businesses.
C.attempt to maintain a specified rate of growth in the minority business sector.
D.rely on the participation of large corporations to finance minority businesses.
【2】Which of the following statements about the SBA program can be inferred from the passage?
A.The maximum term for loans made to recipient businesses was 15 years.
B.Business loans were considered to be more useful to recipient businesses than was management and technical assistance.
C.The expected failure rate for recipient businesses was significantly lower than the rate that actually resulted.
D.Recipient businesses were encouraged to relocate to areas more favorable for business development.
【3】The author refers to the ‘financial and operating problems’ encountered by MESBIC’s primarily in order to ________.
A.broaden the scope of the discussion to include the legal considerations of funding MESBIC’s through sponsoring companies.
B.call attention to the fact that MESBIC’s must receive adequate funding in order to function effectively.
C.show that sponsoring companies were willing to invest only $500,000 of government- sponsored venture capital in the original MESBIC’s.
D.compare SBA and MESBIC limits on minimum funding.
【4】Which of the following best states the central idea of the passage?
A.The use of MESBIC’s for aiding minority entrepreneurs seems to have greater potential for success than does the original SBA approach.
B.There is a crucial difference in point of view between the staff and directors of some MESBIC’s.
C.After initial problems with management and marketing, minority businesses have begun to expand at a steady rate.
D.Minority entrepreneurs wishing to form new businesses now have several equally successful federal programs on which to rely.

One hot afternoon, my brother Mat, a skateboarder, and I were out in front of my grandparents’ house. Mat was determined (下决心) to jump on his skateboard over a chair that he had placed in the street. I was watching him try again and again. He treated this sport, skateboarding, an important and popular sport in my country, with great love and determination. Anytime he fell down, he got right back up and tried it again.
That hot afternoon,I could see him sweating. I was worried that he’d get heatstroke (中暑). I had heard grown-ups talk about people dying of heatstroke, and I kind of understood what it was. I really didn’t want my brother to get it.
So sitting on the porch (门廊) of my grandparents’ house, I was thinking of ways to keep him cool. Just then, Mat called me, “Hey Betty, could you get me my iced tea?” I replied to his request with a nod and stood up to go get the tea. I quickly went inside the house and headed through the hallway toward Grandma’s kitchen. My grandma was making toast. When walking toward her, I heard the most shocking sound I had ever heard in my short life.
“What was that?” Grandma asked. “Did Mat scream?” As I ran through the house toward the front door, I had one thing on my mind heatstroke. When I saw Mat, my image of Mat, my big brother and protector, was destroyed. He lay still on the ground. My grandma came up, told me to go and wait inside for her. Later, neighbors took my brother to the hospital. It turned out that the heatstroke had caused him to fall and break his bones.
I didn’t get to see Mat for at least a month. Finally, I could get to see my brother together with my family. In the hospital, I found bandages around his legs. Weeks later, on the day of his leaving the hospital, the doctors said Mat probably wouldn’t walk again for the rest of his life.
