二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The scars that Pat Pribble carried through life were formed nearly 50 years ago, caused by fellow students, who picked on him because he was different.

Pat’s parents had held him back in the fourth grade, so he ended up in the same class as his younger brother, Leo. Forever the oldest kid in the class, Pat tried to fit in. But he was always just not good enough for this; just not smart enough for that. Pat Pribble was a target. Now 65, he lives in a studio apartment with his dog, getting by on Social Security. From a distance, with his long gray hair and beard, Pat appears tough, the kind of man you might cross the street to avoid.

Last November, as Carey, one of the classmates, planned for the 45th reunion-postponed a year because of the pandemic-he decided to personally invite Pat, who had never been there before. “Even after all these years,” Carey says, “the mind remembers a voice. It was Pat.” With a bit of research, he called Pat and learned that Pat had been putting money aside each week to buy a bus ticket to visit Leo since he had terminal brain cancer with only months to live.

“Never underestimate people,” said Leo in his last moment of life. “We’re all different now than when we were kids.” His former classmates have kept their promise that after he was gone, they wouldn’t lose track of Pat. And they just did. Every week, one or more of them call Pat to see how he’s doing and even send him some “walking around money”.

Healing wounds from the past has allowed Pat to look to the future. “I’ll be at the next reunion,” he says. “These guys . . .” He pauses, stifling tears. “Let’s just say that everyone needs people like these guys in their lives.”

【1】What do we know about Pat Pribble from the first two paragraphs?

A.A man who wore scars both mentally and physically.

B.A boy who was unique and welcomed in school.

C.A person who had no awareness of cleanness.

D.A student who felt lower and unconfident.

【2】Why does Carey intend to invite Pat to the 45th reunion?

A.To show off his present happy life.

B.To let more people participate in the reunion.

C.To relieve his guilt towards Pat in school days.

D.To call on his classmates to donate money to Pat.

【3】What message does the story seem to convey?

A.Beauty lies in the eyes of beholder.

B.Life is a process of personal growth.

C.Never judge a person by his appearance.

D.Scars can eventually be cured completely.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?

    A.With Open Arms, at Last

    B.In Different Ways, in Fact

    C.Being Unforgettable, School Life

D.Looking to the Future, These Guys

  • 22、Thirty-four years after graduating from high school, I found myself sitting with some of my former classmates for an all-school reunion.

Our conversation centered around funny things and what our classmates were up to now. Eventually, the conversation came to a classmate, Janelle. Jill said, “Has anyone been in touch with Janelle?” Diana said, “I tried to contact her for our last reunion. She never responded.” Jill said, “I’ve always felt bad about how she was treated.” There was a general murmur of agreement around the table.

It had started in elementary school when Danny, a popular kid who was always looking to be the center of attention, caught a glimpse of Janelle picking her nose. Unaware that she was being watched, she slipped her finger into her mouth. Immediately, Danny pointed at Janelle and exclaimed, “She ate her boogers (鼻屎)! THAT is SO disgusting.” The boys had a “grossed out”(恶心的) look on their faces and the taunt (嘲弄) was repeated by every boy. By the end of the next day, everyone in our class had known Janelle’s new nickname — “booger eater” and called it at least once. Reluctant to join in, somehow we did it anyway.

“Janelle never did anything. She just looked sad. Unfortunately, no one else did anything either. I wish any one of us had stood up for her,” said Jill. Everyone around the table agreed.

Each of us shared a time when we were reminded of Janelle over the years. Jill shared how her own daughter was bullied in school. Diana shared how her son came home from school and told her about his classmate being bullied, and they talked about how he could stand up for the child being bullied. I shared how we taught acceptance and kindness in my school. Several of us had tears in our eyes as we talked. We all regretted the part we played in the bullying.

When it was time to leave, Diana said, “I want to believe that, even though we cannot make amends (补偿) directly to Janelle, we can at least forgive ourselves. Let’s make an agreement going forward to do small acts of kindness in Janelle’s honor. We hugged each other tightly with damp eyes and agreed. I said, “I’m glad something good came out of that negative experience that happened so long ago.” Although forgiveness didn’t occur the way we wanted it to —with Janelle— forgiving ourselves feels good. We can’t change the past, but we can forgive and move forward.

【1】Why did Jill feel bad about how Janelle was treated?

    A.Jill was a close friend of Janelle’s.

B.Jill unwillingly called Janelle “booger eater”.

C.Jill regretted not standing up for Janelle.

D.Jill was the one who started the nickname.

【2】What was the outcome of the reunion for the classmates?

A.They vowed to change the past.

B.They decided to contact Janelle again.

C.They determined to be kind to others.

D.They apologized to Janelle for their behavior.

【3】What life lesson did the author learn?

    A.Forgiving others is forgiving ourselves.

B.Demonstrating regret is of great importance.

C.Reunion with classmates helps reflect ourselves.

D.We should learn from the past and strive to be better.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.No Bullying

    B.Behaving Ourselves

    C.Seeking Forgiveness

    D.Bidding Farewell to the Past

  • 23、Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and try something a little scary can help you get into the habit not of failing but of learning from each new experience. Try the following:

【1】 The good news is that you needn’t go abroad in order to make a fool of yourself! There are almost certain to be restaurants in your city run by people who do not speak the same first-language as you. Don’t worry if your grasp of their language is imperfect. 【2】 And who cares if they laugh!? Laugh along with them.

Date someone you would normally avoid. Obviously, this does not mean dating someone you find unattractive or threatening. But, let’s say you are a man and normally date girls who are ambitious and career-minded. Of course, the date may be a complete disaster. You may even find yourself reduced to silence, while she sits there looking bored to death. 【3】

Try cooking a meal for family or friends. If you are the sort of person who finds toasted sandwiches complicated, try making a three course meal for friends. Remember, you are learning to approach failure in a new way. If that seems too big a deal, try simply cooking dinner for your partner. 【4】 You may use too much sugar, or leave the meat in for too long, or not realize that you should have placed it on the bottom shelf of the oven, or whatever. A week later, try the same meal again, this time correcting your mistakes. 【5】 You can be sure that your favourite chef messed up her signature dish numerous times before she got it right—indeed, that is how she got it right!

A.Order food in a foreign language.

B.Learn to value and even accept failure.

C.Things will almost certainly go wrong.

D.But it will at least be a new kind of experience.

E.But failure does have valuable lessons to teach.

F.The waiters will almost certainly appreciate your effort.

G.Cooking is an excellent example of how people learn through failure.

  • 24、   Muhammad Ali was raised in a small home in Louisville, Kentucky. From those humble beginnings neither he nor any observer at that time could have forecast the path he would carve through life. He was a Golden Gloves champion at age 17, an Olympic gold medalist at age 18, and an undefeated heavyweight champion at age 22.

His fighting career began when, spurred by the theft of his prized new bicycle, he was out to get the person responsible. Ali was releasing his anger at the local gym, when the sharp-sighted policeman Joe Martin suggested, “You'd better learn to box first.” And he did. And before his career in the ring ended, the world would know his name as the man crowned heavyweight champion three times--- the greatest.

Outside of athletics, too, Ali never gave up standing up for what he believed in the 1960s, he took his conviction for draft evasion(拒服兵役) all the way to the Supreme Court, which overturned his conviction in 1971. He used his words as well as his fists, recording two spoken-word album and an R&B song and earning two Grammy nominations(提名奖); writing two autobiographies; and acting in several films and a Broadway musical.

Eventually, his greatest fight was not in the ring. After being the world’s toughest human opponents, it was Parkinson’s disease that would prove to be his final enemy. In true Ali style, he met this challenge head on. Instead of shrinking from this difficulty, he stepped onto the world stage once more as a champion. His tireless work raising money to fight this terrible disease inspired thousands and endeared him to a new generation of admirers around the world even beyond his death in 2016. As he was in the ring, he remains in our eyes---- the greatest.

1Why are the age mentioned three times in the first paragraph?

A.To show Ali’s talent in boxing. B.To list Ali’s great titles.

    C.To tell Ali’s humble beginnings. D.To prove observer’s foresight.

2Ali had several different roles in his life. What are they?

athlete  civil rights activist film director Grammy award winner

    A.①②③④ B.①②④ C.①②③ D.①②

    3What’s “the true Ali style”?

A.Giving in to obstacles. B.Solving problems by fist.

C.Facing challenges directly. D.Working tirelessly to raise money.

4Which might be the best title for the passage?

A.His Biggest Fight Yet Isn’t in the Ring

B.The Greatest Boxer in American History

C.From a Poor Boy to a World Champion

    D.A Fearless Warrior Against Parkinson

  • 25、The beauty, majesty, and timelessness of a primary rainforest are indescribable. It is impossible to ________ on film, to describe in words, or to explain to those who have never had the awe-inspiring experience of standing in the heart of a primary rainforest.

Rainforests have ________ over millions of years to turn into the incredibly complex environments they are today. Rainforests represent a store of living and ________ renewable natural resources that for ages, by virtue of their richness in both animal and plant species, have ________ a wealth of resources for the survival and well-being of humankind. These resources have included basic food supplies, clothing, shelter, fuel, spices, industrial raw materials, and medicine for all those who have lived in the majesty of the forest. ________, the inner dynamics of a tropical rainforest is an intricate (错综复杂的) and fragile system. Everything is so ________ that upsetting one part can lead to unknown damage or even destruction of the whole. Sadly, it has taken only a century of human intervention to destroy what nature designed to________ forever.

The scale of human ________ on ecosystems everywhere has increased enormously in the last few decades. Since 1980 the global economy has tripled in size and the world population has increased by 30 percent. Consumption of everything on the planet has risen — at a cost of our ________. In 2001, The World Resources Institute estimated that the demand for rice, wheat, and corn is expected to grow by 40% by 2020, increasing irrigation water demands by 50% or more. They further reported that the demand for wood could double by the year 2050; ________, it is still the tropical forests of the world that supply the bulk of the world’s demand for wood.

In 1950, about 15 percent of the Earth’s land surface was covered by rainforest. Today, more than half has already gone up in ________. In fewer than fifty years, more than half of the world’s tropical rainforests have fallen ________ to fire and the chain saw, and the rate of destruction is still accelerating. Unbelievably, more than 200,000 acres of rainforest are burned every day. That is more than 150 acres lost every minute of every day, and 78 million acres lost every year! More than 20 percent of the Amazon rainforest is already gone, and much more is severely threatened as the destruction continues. It is estimated that the Amazon alone is vanishing at a rate of 20,000 square miles a year. If nothing is done to curb (抑制) this________, the entire Amazon could well be gone within fifty years.

Massive________ brings with it many ugly consequences—air and water pollution, soil erosion, malaria epidemics, the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and the________ of biodiversity through extinction of plants and animals. Fewer rainforests mean less rain, less oxygen for us to breathe, and an increased threat from global warming.
