二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A decade ago, colored lights danced around the living room on New Year's Eve and happy music was played. Upstairs, the children were asleep. But I wasn't feeling happy. In mid-December, my husband and I had been informed that he had cancer and that he was going to die. He had less than a year left, the doctors said.

In the years since that painful season, I have come to look back upon New Year's Eve. New Year's Eve brings a halt to the endless commitments that fill our daily lives and a chance to reflect New Year's Eve is full of possibility and anticipation. What will be the surprising experiences and delightful successes in the coming year? But also, what disappointments are waiting for us in the next twelve months?

In many ways, New Year's Eve and the days that surround it are a line between past and future. That line is made up of a series of moments of transition (过渡)that take us out of the old and into the new. Transition can be challenging for many of us. It's about letting go of the familiar and diving into the unfamiliar.

Just as, back then, I had to face letting go of the life I had led with my beloved husband and stepping into a new world as a widowed mom, I find that each year I have to step out of the version of me that suited the year that is ending and ease into the version of me who will rise to the goals I am holding for myself for the year ahead.

Last year at this time, I sat in a chair in southern France and drank in the beauty of the countryside around me. The three children 1 had brought into this world talked and laughed around the table beside me as we enjoyed a lunch of bread and cheese.

I was filled with a sense of joy and I had a glowing (热情洋溢的)heart that was full of hope. It was another ending and another beginning. May we all transition into the best of what lies ahead. May we all find happiness in this holiday season.

1What causes author's unhappiness on New Year's Eve a decade ago?

A.The pressure she faced in her work.

B.The health problem her husband suffered.

C.The information received from her family.

D.The relationship between her and her husband.

2According to the author, what should people do on the New Year's Eve?

A.Set challenging goals for the next year.

B.Manage daily routines and form a new habit.

C.Spend more time with family members.

D.Think about the past and get ready for the future.

3What's the main purpose of writing the passage?

A.To honor her beloved late husband.

B.To show how she got through a hard time.

C.To share her new view of New Year's Eve.

D.To remind us that misfortune is part of life.

  • 22、When plumbing makes funny noises, it’s not always a good sign. But John Kovac, a harpist from Virginia, likes the pipes to sing. He thinks plumbing pipes make good musical instruments.

Kovac has made standard harps out of wood for more than 20 years. He says he feels excited when he creates an instrument with his hands and uses it to make music come alive. But it takes years of training and special tools to make a traditional musical instrument. Kovac wanted to share the joy of making instruments with people who might not have the time or money to do it. So he decided to find an easier way.

Plumbing was the answer. Kovac found PVC pipes at a local store. PVC pipes are the white tubing that many plumbers use. You might find some in your house under a sink or in the basement. Kovac says that PVC pipes are great for making instruments because they are inexpensive, come in many shapes and sizes, and fit together perfectly.

Kovac makes harps, guitars, violins, and drums out of PVC pipes. He also makes uncommon instruments like the udu from Nigeria. His instruments may look as if they come from outer space, but they really work. He and some of his music students and friends even started a band called the East Coast PVC Band.

Sally Seabright is a violin teacher who plays the PVC violin with the band. At first, the rounded shape of the PVC violin made it difficult to hold between her chin and shoulder, but Kovac made a slight change by adding a piece that fits perfectly under her chin.

That kind of adaptability is what Kovac admires about PVC. He says, “I know it’s not easy for the average person to make a musical instrument, but I hope to enable anyone who has ever dreamed of making a violin, harp, or guitar to fulfill his or her dreams.”

【1】What does the author intend to show in paragraph 2?

A.The great hardships of being a harpist.

C.The process of making a musical instrument.

D.The reason why Kovac came up with his creative idea.

【2】Why have PVC pipes won Kovac’s favor?

    A.They are environmentally friendly.

B.They are highly available and adaptable.

C.They can make better sounds than wood.

D.They offer a selling point for his instruments.

【3】What can be learned about the PVC instruments from paragraph 4?

A.They are a bit difficult to hold for players.

B.They are very unusual in the way they look.

C.They are inspired by outer space elements.

D.They are designed to play traditional music.

【4】What is a suitable title for the text?

    A.Musical plumbing

    B.A wonderful harpist

    C.A plumber’s music dream

  • 24、   Reducing plastic waste isn't easy because the cheap material is found in almost every household item. Now, a delicious and nutritious solution has come up to help reduce our dependence on this environmental hazard.

David Christian, the co-founder of Evoware, says the idea of creating the biodegradable (生物降解的) products came from concern at the country’s high pollution rate. Indonesia is home to four of the world's worst polluted rivers. Since single-use packaging is a large contributor to the problem, Evoware decided to deal with that first.

After investigating various materials, the company settled on seaweed. Unlike corn, commonly used for biodegradable containers, seaweed does not require resources like water or large amounts of space. Since Indonesian farmers already harvest more seaweed than they can sell, it's easy for the company to find the material.

Though they will not reveal their production process, Evoware says the seaweed packaging contains no chemicals and is safe to consume. The company has also invented single-use cups, which can break down 30 days after they're thrown away.

While replacing plastic with the seaweed products may seem appealing to most of us, it is a hard-sell in Indonesia. According to Christian, 'The awareness to reduce single-use plastic is still very low. This makes our bioplastic unnecessary.” Also a factor is the cost, which is higher than using plastic. Hopefully, Evoware will succeed in convincing Indonesians and people worldwide that switching to their products will be helpful to protecting our beautiful planet.

1What problem did Evoware decide to deal with first?

A.Ways to clean the four worst polluted rivers.

B.What nutritious materials for people to use.

C.How to deal with single-use packaging.

D.Means to contribute to the country's economy.

    2Why did Evoware choose seaweed?

A.It didn't require much space and was easy to get.

B.It could be found everywhere in his country.

C.It was most commonly used for packaging.

D.It grew thickly in most of the polluted rivers.

3What can we infer from Christian's words?

A.Their seaweed products have won government support.

B.Sometimes it's hard to get people to reduce the use of plastics.

C.Their new products have received worldwide popularity.

D.The cost of making seaweed products will be lowered soon.

4What does the underlined word 'hard-sell' in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A.Something lasting long. B.Something hard to accept.

C.Something easy to get. D.Something commonly seen.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jack tossed(抛,扔)the papers on my desk—his eyebrows knit(皱眉)into a straight line as he glared at me.

    “What’s wrong?” I asked.

He pointed at the proposal. “Next time you want to change anything, ask me first,” He said, turning on his heels and leaving me in anger.

How dare he treat me like that, I thought. I had changed one long sentence, and corrected grammar, something I thought I was paid to do.

It’s not that I hadn’t been warned. Other women who had worked my job before me called Jack names I couldn’t repeat. One coworker took me aside the first day. “He’s personally responsible for two different secretaries leaving the firm,” she whispered.

As the weeks went by, I grew to hate Jack. His actions made me question much that I believed in, such as turning the other cheek and loving your enemies. I prayed about the situation, but to be honest, I wanted to put Jack in his place, not like him.

One day another of his episodes left me in tears. I stormed into his office, prepared to lose my job if needed, but not before I let the man know how I felt. I opened the door and Jack glanced up. “What?” he asked abruptly.

Suddenly I knew what I had to do. After all, he deserved it.

I sat across from him and said calmly, “Jack, the way you’ve been treating me is wrong. I’ve never had anyone speak to me that way. As a professional, it’s wrong, and I can’t allow it to continue.”

Jack snickered(暗笑)nervously and leaned back in his chair. I closed my eyes briefly. God help me, I prayed.

“I want to make you a promise. I will be a friend,” I said. “I will treat you as you deserve to be treated, with respect and kindness. You deserve that. Everybody does. That’s what friends do.” I slipped out of the chair and closed the door behind me.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
