  • 27、It was a comfortable sunny Sunday. I was going to meet an old university friend I hadn’t seen for years, and was really excited.

My train was running a little late, but that was no big problem—I could text him to say I would be delayed. He would understand. But … where was my mobile phone? I had that familiar sinking feeling. Yes, I’d left it at home.

No mobile phone. I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling anxious, on edge and worried when I don’t have my phone with me. In fact, I know I’m not alone: two-thirds of us experience “nomophobia (无手机恐惧症)”, the fear of being out of mobile phone contact.

That’s according to a study from 2012 which surveyed 1,000 people in the UK about their relationship with mobile phones.

It says we check our mobile phones 34 times a day, and that 18—24-year-olds, especially girls, are the most likely to suffer fear of being without their mobiles: 77% of them say they are unable to be apart from their phones for more than a few minutes.

    Do you have nomophobia?

    ● You never turn your phone off.

    ● You frequently check for texts, missed calls and emails.

    ● You always take your phone to the bathroom with you.

    ● You never let the battery run out.

It’s funny to think that around 20 years ago the only people with mobile phones would be businessmen carrying their large, plastic “bricks”. Of course, these days, mobile phones are everywhere. A UN study from this year said there would be more mobile phones than people across the world by the end of 2020.

And when there are more phones than people in the world, maybe it’s time to ask who really is in charge? Are you in control of your phone, or does your phone control you?

So, what happened with my university friend? When I arrived a few minutes late he just laughed and said: “You haven’t changed at all—still always late!” And we had a great afternoon catching up, full of jokes and stories, with no desire to check my phone.

Not having it with me felt strangely free. Maybe I’ll leave it at home on purpose next time.

    B.Positive.

    A.A successful manager.

    B.A 21-year-old girl.

    C.A 21-year-old boy.

    D.A lonely middle-aged person.

【4】What does the passage talk about?

    A.The history of mobile phones.

B.The story of meeting an old university friend.

C.The attraction of playing mobile phone.

  • 28、Many people living in extremely low-income areas don’t have access to the materials they need to make even the most basic home improvements. Most, including Tessa Vierk’s and Jim Benton’s friends, can’t afford to buy pricey tools themselves, nor can they afford to hire someone else to repair their homes. That’s where the Chicago Tool Library comes in!

Tessa and Jim set up the library that accepts tool donations in 2019. It functions exactly like a regular library, except instead of books, people can borrow tools they need for home repairs, woodworking, gardening, cooking, camping, and more. People sign up for a library card, and there’s a pay-what-you-can annual fee with no standard or minimum payments. Members can borrow as many tools as they can carry for seven days, and renew(续借) them if they want to. When the library first started, Tessa and Jim had about 150 members. They now have over 1,500 members from all over the Chicago area and more than 2,500 tools to choose from.

Now, in fact, they’ve had to turn down tool donations. They’re searching for a larger building to hold “twice as many tools”. “Probably 90 percent of the tools we have have been donated,” Tessa said. “A lot of people own too many high-quality things, and they would give them to us so that we don’t have the space to accept.”

“While it’s quiet around the library, it’s far from the city, which is hard for young people who are working to get our services. We are planning to relocate to a larger location with a better public transport network to make our offerings, including more tools, and lots of other wonderful services, available to even more people,” they wrote on their website.

【1】What made Tessa and Jim start the Chicago Tool Library?

    A.Their love for reading books.

    B.Their friends’ encouragement.

    C.Their interest in decorating.

D.Their desire to help the poor.

【2】Which word best describes the Chicago Tool Library?

    A.Academic.

    B.Popular.

    C.Costly.

    D.Demanding.

【3】Why do Tessa and Jim turn down tool donations?

    A.They have had enough tools.

B.The tools are of poor quality.

    C.Their storage space is limited.

D.They want to buy tools themselves.

【4】What can be inferred about the present location of the library?

    A.It’s not easily accessible.

    B.It’s close to the community.

    C.It’s too noisy and crowded.

    D.It’s favorable for the young.

I wasn’t the most popular kid in my freshman year, not into fashion, and preferred reading the books about sports. As a result, I had no close friends, mostly keeping to myself with my head buried in a book, which is why I was so surprised when Ashley and I became friends the summer before sophomore (大二) year.

Ashley was very different from me. She was outspoken and fashionable. She listened to the bands I had never heard of and was very artistic. These were qualities I knew nothing about. We had always been in the same classes throughout school, but had never really talked much.

During summer schools we were both taking classes in hopes of graduating early. The teacher paired us up on an assignment (任务). Ashley seemed unwilling to work with me at first, but she gave in, I imagine, because none of her “cool” friends were in the class. We met at the library to work on the project and really hit it off. We sat by each other the rest of the summer and when classes ended, we continued to hang out.

I looked up to Ashley; she was all of the things I thought I wanted to be. I began listening to the music she listened to, wearing the clothes she wore. I started watching the TV programs Ashley watched. When we started school again, Ashley introduced me to her group of friends. Finally I fit in. I followed them around, laughing when they told jokes, agreeing when they had opinions.

One day, I overheard their talk in the school canteen (食堂). “She’s such a loser,” one girl said. “I know, Ashley. She just follows you around trying to be you. She copies you; she doesn’t have a personality of her own, ” another girl added.

Then Ashley replied, “I know, I wish she would leave us alone. We were in summer school together and now she thinks we’re best friends or something. ”
