二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Probably one thing that Armenians wouldn’t forget when they sit at the table is bread. Armenians knew how to make wine and bake bread from the ancient times. Perhaps the pride of Armenian cuisine is the traditional and national bread Lavash.

Lavash is a traditional Armenian thin bread. The preparation of this demands special skills and great effort. In most cases, making tools is the duty of men but preparing bread is the job of women.

Generally, tondir, the most important tool, is located underground. For making Lavash, Armenians use flour, water, and salt. Firstly they make dough (面团) from flour, water and form them into balls. Then the balls are rolled into thin layers and stretched over a cushion. After preparing them with a special skill slap against the walls of the tondir. Waiting for a minute or thirty seconds, pull the already baked list from the wall.

According to tradition, the preparation was a ritual (仪式) of every family. Making dough was the duty of the elder women of the family and the preparation of it started with the rising of the Sun. Firstly they made the fire, then started making it. The process was accompanied by nice conversations, songs, and jokes.

Want to know what is the tastiest Armenian sandwich? Of course, it is made from Lavash, salty tasty cheese, greens and meats.

In July 2014 Lavash was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List as an expression of Armenian culture. Besides the cuisine, Lavash has a ritual role in weddings. When the couple comes to the groom’s house, his mother puts a list of Lavash on the shoulders of newly married couples as a sign of prosperity (繁荣).

  • 22、The meaning of the word “volunteer ” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services.” There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage(垃圾) from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.

At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a ____ of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.

“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video(录像) about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”

“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer the up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture(文化) that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”

【1】According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who ______.

A.is willing to help those in need without pay

B.can afford to travel to different places

C.has a strong wish to be successful

D.has made a big fortune in life

【2】Tracy started her work as a volunteer _______.

    A.after she met Mother Teresa

    B.after she finished high school

    C.when she was touring Calcutta

D.when she was working in a hospital

【3】Why did Tracy choose to be a volunteer?

A.She liked to work with Mother Teresa.

B.She had already had some experience.

C.She was asked by Mother Teresa’s example.

D.She wanted to follow Mother Teresa’s example.

【4】What is Tracy’s “new idea” (Paragraph 2) of being a volunteer?

A.Going abroad to help the sick.

    B.Working in Mother Teresa’s home.

C.Doing simple things to help the poor.

    D.Improving oneself through helping others.

  • 23、I couldn’t be more excited to join Reader’s Digest as we celebrate our 100th anniversary. Since 1922, this magazine has shared stories about remarkable people across the country and the kind and heroic things they do for one another.

I grew up in a family of storytellers. My father, a police officer in our central Illinois town, came home every day with stories about the people in our community: funny anecdotes or dramatic stories that revealed the lives of the individuals in our town and what they went through every day.

My mother was a gifted storyteller and her job in the front office of our local middle school provided a lot of material. My sister and I heard about classmates who were caught skipping school or forced by the principal to admit their mischief on unpopular teacher. She would deliver the play-by-play to us, laughing about kids and the things they do. My sister and I learned how to find and tell our own stories in a way that the April 1960 issue held Mom and Dad’s attention and earned their laughs. I suspect those conversations pushed me toward journalism, a way of telling stories to an audience beyond the dinner table.

In this special anniversary issue, we look at some of the incredible stories from famous writers, politicians, everyday heroes, and average Americans that have filled the pages of Reader’s Digest for a century. We also talk about humor, health, and how to feel hopeful about the next century. Of course, there is too much for one issue, so be sure to visit us online at rd.com/100th for more.

Most of all, thank you for being a part of the first 100 years of Reader’s Digest. I look forward to hearing and sharing your stories for years to come.

【1】Which of the following is closest in meaning to “mischief” in paragraph 3?

    A.Trick.

    B.Pressure.

    C.Influence.

    D.Emphasis.

【2】What drove the writer to become a journalist?

A.His abundant reading of Readers’ Digest.

    B.His principal’s suggestion and guidance.

C.His parents’ good talent of telling stories.

D.His family’s frequent exchanging of stories.

【3】Why is this anniversary issue of Readers’ Digest special?

A.Because it shares stories beyond the dinner table.

B.Because it has only one offline version available.

C.Because it is a story collection of the previous editions.

D.Because it is particularly enjoyed by the writer’s parents.

【4】What is the purpose of the writer writing the text?

    A.To prove the editor’s theory.

    B.To state the writer’s opinion.

C.To promote the sale of the magazine.

    D.To encourage contributions from readers.

  • 24、   Time to load up some popular games: new research indicates pigs possess the mental capability to play video games. The study, published in Frontiers In Psychology, tested the ability of four pigs(Hamlet, Omelette, Ebony and Ivory)to play a simple joystick(操纵杆)game with their noses, moving a cursor(光标)to four targets on the screen. Although the animals didn’t demonstrate the skills to win a round any time soon, they did show an understanding of some elementary games.

Performing well above chance, the pigs appeared to recognize the movement of the cursor was controlled by the joystick. The fact that they did so well despite a lack of flexible fingers is “extraordinary”, according to the researchers.

“It is no small achievement for an animal, to grasp the concept that the behaviour they are performing is having an effect elsewhere. That pigs can do this to any degree should give us pause as to what else they are capable of learning and how such learning may impact them,” said Purdue University’s Dr Candace Croney, the study’s lead author.

Researchers also noted that while the pigs could be taught to play the game using food as positive motivation, they also responded well to social interaction. In fact, when the game was made more challenging and the pigs became unwilling to participate in, “only oral encouragement by the experimenter” would see training continue.

These findings are the latest to highlight the intelligence of pigs. Not only have they been shown to use mirrors to find hidden food, but studies have also demonstrated how pigs can be taught to “come” and “sit” after oral commands.

“As with any sentient(有感觉力的)beings, how we interact with pigs and what we do to them impacts and matters to them,” Croney said. “We therefore have a moral duty to understand how pigs acquire information, and what they are capable of leaning and remembering, because it ultimately offers the potential for how they understand their interactions with us and their environments.”

【1】What can we learn from Paragraphs 1 and 2?

A.Pigs have the potential to play games well.

B.Pigs have noses as flexible as human hands.

C.Pigs possess the mental ability we didn’t know.

D.Pigs know well about what they are playing.

【2】What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Playing joystick games so well.

B.Realizing the effects of their acts.

C.Carrying out tasks with their noses.

    D.Following human oral commands.

【3】Which of the following can improve the performance of trained pigs?

    A.Less challenging video games.

B.A nice treat before the experiment.

    C.Severe punishment if necessary.

    D.Inspiring words from experimenters.

【4】What does the author think of the research findings?

A.They reflect the needs to interact more with animals.

B.They offer humans ideas of how to live with animals.

C.They encourage us to explore how pigs interact with us.

D.They show us how pigs interact with their environments.
