二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Do you want to look fashionable? Is looking fashionable more important than being comfortable? Many people seem to think so, judging by the things they wear. But fashion is not everything. It is more important to be a healthy and good person.

People go to great lengths to be fashionable. Some people think they have to have a certain body type, so they go on extreme, unhealthy diets in order to change their bodies. In addition, many women wear uncomfortable fashions, such as high-heeled shoes that create blisters, tight body shapers that limit blood flow, and sticky false eyelashes(假睫毛). Men and women alike spend time and money on products that change their natural hair color and use hot irons and blow dryers to curl or straighten their hair. Some people spend several hours a day in front of a mirror. Is fashion important enough to spend so much time and effort on changing how they look like?

If the purpose of fashion is to make a person feel good, it does not make sense that he or she would go through so much discomfort to be fashionable. Fashion should not come first. People should prioritize(优先考虑)being healthy and positive. What people wear does not indicate anything about their personalities. Instead of spending hours choosing a suit, perhaps you should call your friends and do something together. Instead of going on strict diets and starving, why not eat some healthy foods and then exercise? By doing these things, you can keep a healthy lifestyle and truly grow as a person.

  • 27、Americans are getting older, and family size is getting smaller. That means the United States will have less working adults in the future. By 2030, twenty percent of U.S. residents will be 66 years of age or older. That compares to 13 percent in 2010, and just under 10 percent in 1970.

The aging population could be a concern if Americans expect to have an expanding population, says David Kelly. “If you're investing in things like the housing industry or the auto industry and you need an ever-growing population, then you have to adjust to a world in which the U.S. population is growing more slowly,” he said.

Different studies show that an aging population cuts into economic growth, and older workers who stay on the job are often less productive than younger ones.

But as Americans are aging, last year the birth rate nationwide dropped to its lowest level in 32 years. Less than 3.8 million babies were born in 2018, which is two percent less than the year before. Taken as a whole, the population grew only six-tenths of one percent in 2018, compared to 1.2 percent growth in the 1990s.

Kelly said the low birth rate is not necessarily bad news. Looking beyond economics, a growing world population could do more damage to Earth’s environment. He said that U.S. policy makers should plan for dealing with a smaller workforce. “We really should adapt to a world of slow population growth because it's clearly happening to us,” he said.

What will replace human workers? Like others, Kelly expects the lack of workers to fuel the growth of robotics and artificial intelligence. He said that Americans need to prepare for the U.S. economic growth to slow a little in the future. Another way to fix the decreasing workforce is to add more legal immigrants(移民). Immigrants usually arrive in the United States when they are of working age.

But this is not an easy solution, because the U.S. Congress and President Donald Trump continue to disagree over how to deal with immigration issues.

The U.S. economy can easily make changes to deal with the slower population growth, Kelly said. But he worries that politics could get in the way of solutions. “The real question is a political question,” he notes, “because it seems even as our population matures(成熟) in years, it seems that our political system gets less mature in terms of thought process.”

【1】What is the main problem discussed in the passage?

A.Solutions to the lack of workers.

    B.Conventional political systems.

    C.Adaptation to the slow growth.

    D.The aging population in America.

【2】According to the passage, aging Americans will contribute to _______.

    A.an ever-growing birth rate

    B.a catastrophe in some industry

    C.slow economic development

    D.a perfect Earth's environment

【3】What does "this" in paragraph 7 refer to?

    A.The fast development of robotics.

    B.The growth of artificial intelligence.

    C.The fixing of decreasing workforce.

D.The adding of more legal immigrants.

【4】As for the solution to the problem, what is Kelly's attitude?

    A.Optimistic.

    B.Casual.

    C.Concerned.

    D.Desperate.

  • 28、Who are these people rushing by you in the street? More than 215 million people now call America “home”, but most of them can trace their families back to other parts of the world. If you look at the names on shop windows, you will see that Americans come from many different lands. The idea that these people, who once were strangers to the United States, have lost the customs and cultures of their original countries and have become “American” is really not true. In fact, what exists in America is more often a kind of “side-by-side” living in which groups of people from other countries often have kept many of their customs and habits. They join the general American society only in certain areas of their lives—such as in schools, business, and sports—but they keep many of their own native customs and manners socially and at home. This living “side-by-side” has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it may cause disagreements to develop between groups whose ways of life are very different from one another. However, there are also great advantages that come from the variety of cultures brought by settlers from other lands. There is great freedom of choice among ideas and dress, food, and social customs in America. Everyone can find some part of his or her familiar world in the United States, in churches, music, food, national groups, or newspapers.

【1】More than 215 million people call America “home” because________.

    A.they buy their houses there

    B.they settle there now

    C.they get married there

    D.they were born there

    【2】“Side-by-side” living style means ________.

    A.making friends with native people

B.the groups of people who live nearby

C.keeping their own customs while sharing American ones in certain areas

D.that they get closer to American society

【3】According to the passage, people in the USA ________.

    A.share American customs and culture

    B.live in a kind of “side-by-side” society

C.keep their own customs and habits firmly

D.make no choice to accept American customs

【4】Which of the following statements is true?

A.They always stick to their own customs and habits.

B.“Side-by-side” living style is not suitable.

C.They face the society they are not familiar with.

D.The advantages coming from the variety of cultures make life in America colorful.

【5】Which title of the following can best take the place of “Different Cultures in America”?

    A.Advantages and Disadvantages.

    B.Different Customs and Habits.

    C.Home for the People.

    D.“Side-by-side” Living Style in America.

  • 29、   These young men were a different kind of prisoner from those we had seen before. They were brave, hostile and aggressive they would not take orders, and shouted “Amandla” at every opportunity. Their instinct was to confront rather than cooperate. The authorities did not know how to handle them, and they turned the island upside down. During the Rivonia Trial, I remarked to a security policeman that if the government did not reform itself, the freedom fighters who would take our place would some day make the authorities miss us. That day had indeed come on Robben Island.

In these young men we saw the angry revolutionary spirit of the times. I had had some warning. On a visit with Winnie a few months before, she had managed to tell me through our coded conversation that there was a rising class of discontented youths who were violent and Africanist in beliefs. She said they were changing the nature of the struggle and that I should be aware of them.

The new prisoners were shocked by what they considered the inhuman conditions of the island, and said that they could not understand how we could live in such a way. We told them that they should have seen the island in 1964. But they were almost as sceptical of us as they were of the authorities. They chose to ignore our calls for discipline and thought our advice weak and unassertive (不果断).

It was obvious that they regarded us, the Rivonia Trialists, as moderates. After so many years of being branded a radical revolutionary, to be seen as a moderate was a novel and not altogether pleasant feeling. I knew that I could react in one of two ways: I could scold them for their disrespect or I could listen to what they were saying. I chose the latter.

Then some of these men, such as Strini Moodley of the South African Students Organization and Saths Cooper of the Black People’s Convention, came into our section, _________.

Shortly after their arrival on the island, the commanding officer came and asked me as a favour to address the young men. He wanted me to tell them to behave themselves, to recognize the fact that they were in prison and to accept the discipline of prison life. I told him that I was not prepared to do that. Under the circumstances, they would have regarded me as a follower of the authorities.

(---adapted from “Long walk to freedom: The autobiography of Nelson Mandela”)

1We may infer from the passage all of the following EXCEPT that ___________.

    C. many were concerned about the influence these young men could make

    D. the author’s activities were strictly monitored

2One sentence is missing in the blank of the passage regarding the author’s following reactions.Which of the following reactions do you think he would have?

    A. I tried to calm them down and talked them into behaving.

    B. I reported to the officers about their dissatisfaction.

    C. I asked them to tell us about their movement and beliefs.

    D. I just turned a deaf ear to the young men.

3Several phrases have been underlined and numbered in the passage; which two of them actually refer to the same people?

    A. ①② B. ②③ C. ③④ D. ⑤①

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.
