21、 Before she leaves home in San Francisco, California, Jennifer Schaefer, puts on long sleeves and a big hat she calls her “personal umbrella.” With her fair skin, red hair, memories of bad childhood sunburn, and a family history of skin cancer, Schaefer is painfully aware of the danger of exposure to ultraviolet(紫外线) radiation, which accounts for the vast majority of skin cancers.
So she finds it unbelievable how few people bother with sun safety, with most preferring sun worship to sun protection. “In our culture, it’s almost funny to be too protected,” she says, highlighting the way her friends tease her when she puts on her bathing suit-a protective 'rash guard' top and knee-length board shorts."We're slowly starting to become aware of the long-term effects of the sun, but it's like global warming-people are not going to make serious changes until they feel a direct impact."
That impact has helped push Australians, who are famous for sun loving, into changing their behavior. With its high solar ultraviolet levels and mostly fair-skinned population, Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. But after decades of increase, the melanoma(黑色瘤) rate began to stay at a steady level in the mid-1990s.The incidence of melanoma among young people's is now falling, as national surveys show that most Australians-more than 70% of adults and 55%of adolescents-no longer prefer a tan(棕褐色).
A 2013 study shows that, in addition to Australis, a handful of countries-notably New Zealand, Canada, Israel, Norway, the Czech Republic(for women)and the United States(for white men)-have melanoma rates that are declining or stabilizing among young people.
Back in San Francisco, Jennifer Schaefer is doing her best to educate the next generation. Her eldest daughter automatically puts on a hat to go outside. “Habits really start in children-it is like brushing your teeth,” she says.
【1】By describing Schaefer's bathing suit, the author suggests that Schaefer_____.
A.does not mind the teasing by her friends
B.attaches great importance to sun protection
C.goes to extreme measures to avoid the sun
D.is more interested in surfing than sunbathing
【2】What do New Zealand and Canada have in common?
A.Sun protection programs are developing quickly.
B.Their citizens prefer to be pale rather than get tanned.
C.Skin cancer rates are not increasing among the young.
D.Women and white men have the lowest rates of melanoma.
【3】What function does the final sentence have?
A.It makes the conclusion more meaningful.
B.It makes a complex concept easier to understand.
C.A serious topic is made more cheerful and attractive.
D.A familiar example supports the point made by the author.
【4】What's the purpose of the text?
A.To help individuals know how to make medical decisions.

22、Beating Burnout and Compassion Fatigue in the New Year
This year has continued to bring many of us closer to the pain, suffering and exhaustion of those experiencing burnout and compassion fatigue (疲倦). There is no doubt that 2021 has been filled with additional challenges. 【1】
The data is clearly showing that our workforce shares feelings of burnout. A recent Gallup report indicated that 67% of us feel burned out either some or most of the time. At an organizational level, Hogan reports that burned out employees are 18% less productive and 2.6 times more likely to be actively seeking a different job.
Fatigue and burnout arise not when we fail to get sufficient rest but when we fail to appreciate the moments of purpose and joy in our lives.
There are a few myths around burnout and compassion fatigue:
Myth 1: Burnout is an individual's problem.
Many people believe that burnout is about an individual who needs to “figure it out”. 【2】 Team structure offers critical support and leaders should create environment where team burnout is addressed.
Myth 2: 【3】
Surprisingly, the individuals most likely to experience burnout are committed employees and leaders who love their job and are highly engaged. These top performers are the people you are most likely to lose.
Myth 3: People who experience burnout are just less resilient.
Research shows a correlation between higher levels of resilience (复原力) and lower levels of burnout. 【4】 But resilience looks very different now from five years ago, and my guess is that it will continue to shift.
If 2021 has taught us anything, it is that we cannot separate burnout from our emotions, whether they may be fear, anger, shame or guilt. 【5】
A.While fatigue is more sudden and results from carrying the pain and suffering of others, what we experience is similar.
B.Burnout results from lack of responsibility.
C.Burnout hurts individuals' enthusiasm and passion.
D.At this point, burnout and compassion fatigue has expanded into many aspects of our lives.
E.But burnout occurs at different levels and is the result from challenges to individuals, teams and organizations.
F.At one point, people believed resilience was established by “sucking it up”, or “just staying positive”.
G.And the path forward requires us to deepen the relationship with feelings of joy, passion, pride and fulfillment.
23、 It was the homecoming parade in Rockwall, Texas, and cheerleader Tyra Winters was riding on one of the school’s floats (彩车). As it slowly made its way down the avenue, the 17-year-old enthusiastically waved at the crowd, all the while absorbed in the music, laughter, and applause.
Suddenly, a terrible scream came from the cheering crowd. Looking down, Winters saw a two-year-old on the sidewalk gasping for air and his mother desperately begging for help. The boy had been enjoying a piece of candy when it slid down the back of his mouth, sticking in his throat and blocking his windpipe (气管).
“I saw a little bright red face and his mom’s begging for help,” Winters told KTVT.
“There was no coughing; there was no breathing,” the mother, Nicole Hornback, later told news station NBCDFW. “He was just gasping for air. ” No one seemed to know how to help.
Except for Winters. A senior with dreams of becoming a doctor, she had learned the first-aid method of Heimlich maneuver and CPR. Knowing that the clock was ticking, she jumped off the moving float and ran to the child. By the time she got to him, his face had turned purple. “I got him!” she yelled to Nicole as she grabbed the boy from her. “I held him face down and gave a good three back pushes,” she told the local CBS station. Soon, the boy coughed up the piece of candy, and began breathing again. Without another word, Winters handed the boy back to his mother and ran back to her float before it could leave her behind.
It all happened so fast. Nicole never had time to thank the teen. “She didn’t need to,” says Winters. “I knew how she was feeling. I saw her tears. I saw her face. ”
And for Nicole, she says, “I don’t really have any words,” she says. “The words that you would say to anyone who does something for you is ‘thank you. ’ But that doesn’t seem good enough. ”
【1】It can be learned from paragraphs 1-4 that ________.
A.the cheering crowd ignored the scream for help
B.Winters panicked at the mother’s desperate cry
C.the mother gave the boy first aid but in vain
D.the little boy choked on a piece of candy
【2】What does Tyra Winters mainly talk about in the interview?
A.Her dream of being a doctor.
B.Her timely rescue of the boy.
C.Her enthusiasm for the parade.
D.Her cooperation with the crowd.
【3】What does Nicole mean in the last paragraph?
A.The media’s attention to the matter left her at a loss.
B.The crowd’s concern for the boy deeply touched her.
C.Her memory of the unexpected incident made her speechless.
D.Her gratitude for Winters’ heroic actions was beyond expression.
24、Imagine if the same jacket that warms you up on cold days would also cool you down on hot ones. Fabrics with “phase-change properties” (相变性) can do that. And a research team from China now shows that 3-D printing techniques can produce a strong phase-change cloth.
This new fabric not only helps regulate temperatures, but also conducts electricity. It even resists the radio waves used in Wi-Fi. “The combination of those properties is very amazing,” says Sergio Granados-Focil. He did not take part in the cloth’s development. But this polymer (聚合物) chemist at Clark University in Worcester, Mass., is familiar with phase-change materials.
Water goes through a phase-change cloth when it freezes or evaporates (蒸发). The removal or addition of heat causes the change between phases. Imagine ice cubes melting into a glass of water. The ice absorbs the water’s heat. That warms up the ice, but cools down the water. Phase-change cloth also works by moving heat around. The Chinese team trapped a phase-changing polymer inside the fabric. It changes between a crystal (晶体) and a non-crystal form. Becoming a crystal absorbs or removes body heat. That will cool you down. But this heat isn’t gone. The fabric stores it. And the polymer will release that heat when it changes back into a non-crystal. This now warms you up.
“The new fabric contains a novel mix of materials. In developing it,” says Yongyi Zhang, “For the first time we demonstrate a 3-D printing strategy and we believe the new cloth can be promising in the future.” Zhang studies nanotechnology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Suzhou.
