二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Using modern technology, archaeologists (考古学家) have recently discovered about 200 Mayan artifacts (玛雅古器) in Mexico, which surprisingly, appear to have been untouched for up to 1,000 years. The artifacts were found inside a cave in ruins of the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

The lead researcher on the project is Mexican archaeologist Guillermo de Anda. He called the cave a “scientific treasure”.

The findings included bone pieces and burnt offering materials. In addition, incense burners, vases, plates and other objects were discovered. Some items included the portrait of Tlaloc, the rain god of central Mexico.

The cave where the objects were found is so unique. It is part of a cave system known as Balamku. The cave is long, narrow and dark. It is about three kilometers east of the main pyramid of Kukulkan. It sits at the center of Chichen Itza which is the stone city described by the United Nations as “one of the greatest Mayan centers of the Yucatan Peninsula.”

The cave sits about 24 meters underground, with areas connected by passages. Some of the passages were so narrow that researchers had to climb in or pull themselves through. The team has so far explored about 460 meters of the cave, and is unsure how far it stretches. The team plans to continue exploring the cave. The found artifacts will not be removed, but studied inside.

The team accidentally found the artifacts while exploring Chichen Itza in an effort to learn more about its underground water system. The new discovery will help scientists better understand the history, culture, lives and beliefs of people who lived in Chichen Itza, especially in the boom years.

Archaeologists believe there may be another cave hidden under the pyramid of Kukulkan that could be connected to the latest find. “Let’s hope God will lead us there,” Guillermo de Anda said. “That is part of the reason why we are entering these sites to find a connection to the natural well under the Kukulkan.”

1What’s amazing about the Mayan artifacts discovered in Mexico?

A.The long history and perfect state.

    B.The digging time and location.

    C.The current high price.

    D.The variety of usage.

2What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The features of the cave. B.The findings in the cave.

C.The ancient cave system. D.The origin of Mayan centers.

3What is the significance of the new discovery?

A.It can help scientists register cultural relics.

B.It can encourage archaeologists to form work beliefs.

C.It can help scientists further learn about Mayan civilization.

D.It can arouse the interest of Mexicans in archaeology.

4What will archaeologists do next according to the last paragraph?

    A.Dig wells under the Kukulkan.

B.Move the findings to another cave.

C.Find the cause of groundwater disappearance.

D.Try to find another cave under the pyramid of Kukulkan.

  • 22、Still seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college.

    King's Art Centre

A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend tees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists.

You could attend a class teaching you how to 'learn from the masters' or get more creative with paint ---- free of charge.

The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee.

    The Botanic Garden

The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University.

The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.

Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals.

The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called 'Hissing Sid' is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.

    Byron's Pool

Many stories surround Lord Byron's time as a student of Cambridge University, Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of "mess and drunkenness". However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I'm not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his roans. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village.

It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron's Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don't trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf- ----over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool.

【1】As mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for_____.

    A.attending the masters' class

    B.working with local artists

    C.learning life drawing

    D.seeing an exhibition

【4】In the passage Byron's Pool is described as a lake_____.

    A.surrounded by fields

    B.owned by Lord Byron

    C.located in Grantchester

    D.discovered by Virginia Woolf

【5】What is the passage mainly about?

    A.Some places for weekend break

B.A way to become creative in art.

C.The colourful life in the countryside.

    D.Unknown stories of Cambridge University.

  • 23、Everything about Pakistani (巴基斯坦的) trucks is lively, from the colors to the designs to the wood carvings on the doors. Each one is carefully decorated, and no two trucks are alike. The drivers hope people will look at their truck with love. Every driver wants his truck to be the most admired vehicle on the road.

Just off the main road between Islamabad and Rawalpindi, there are artists, welders, metalworkers, horn sellers and electricians, all busy refurbishing (整修) and decorating the massive vehicles parked in the yard. Their space, called the carriage factory area, is devoted to the maintenance and care of trucks that serve the purpose of transporting goods from one place to another while looking and sounding as impressive as possible.

Scholars have traced evidence of decorated transport in Pakistan back thousands of years. The Pakistani practice of truck painting began gaining widespread popularity soon after the country’s independence.

Trucks are covered with designs, colorful stickers and fanciful paintings—hearts, flowers, peacocks, movie stars, folk singers, animals, politicians, angels and army generals. Chains dangling off the bottom jingle and sway with the truck’s stops and turns. There are lines of poetry expressing the loneliness of the trucker.

Drivers also have their choice when it comes to the horns. In his shop, Javed Iqbal vocalizes (使发声) some of the horn sounds for visitors. Many drivers request the “rail wallah” horn, he says, the one that sounds like a train. And for those who don’t want to choose just one sound, he sells a single horn with multiple effects.

Thanks in part to the efforts of Khan, the anthropologist and filmmaker, Pakistani trucks also serve a social good. She helped launch an award-winning project in 2019 in which a small number of trucks carry portraits (画像) of missing children, along with a number to call for Roshni Helpline, a Karachi-based nonprofit dedicated to recovering them. Of the 20 or so missing children whose portraits were painted on trucks, at least five were found.

【1】What can be learned about Pakistani trucks?

A.Each of them has a unique appearance.

B.They are usually parked off the main roads.

C.They are admired for their impressive roles in economy.

D.Some of them don’t serve the purpose of transporting goods.

【2】Why do Pakistanis decorate their trucks?

A.They show off their talent in poetry in this way.

B.They follow the tradition of decorating transports.

C.They do it to celebrate the country’s independence.

D.They intend to attract the attention of potential hirers.

【3】What is the case when it comes to the horns of the trucks?

A.Many of them sound like trains.

B.Each truck has more than one horn.

C.They are fixed at the bottom part of the trucks.

D.Drivers have their choices as to how they want them look like.

【4】In what way docs Pakistani trucks contribute to a good cause?

    A.They help find missing children.

B.They transport goods for those in need.

C.They appear in public service advertising.

D.They spread ideas of non-profit organizations.

  • 24、Don’t call Madison Stewart an environmentalist. She sees herself simply as an individual taking action in defense of something she loves that’s in need of protection.

Despite her youth, the 24-year-old is an undersea veteran (老手). She grew up sailing around the Great Barrier Reef on her parents’ boat and spent her early life free diving while patiently waiting for the day when she could get her scuba diving (水肺潜水) certification, aged 12. Already impressed by sharks, Madison was now pleased to be able to observe them in their own world. “I got to know the sharks...I could recognize them by sight,” Madison says. “Other people had dogs around them growing up. I had sharks.”

But within a couple of years, she saw a great reduction in shark numbers on the reef. “One day I went in the water and couldn’t find my sharks anywhere, sharks I’d spent my childhood with,” she says. “They’d been caught and killed.” It was a great moment for Madison.

She left school at 14 to be homeschooled so she could spend more time in the ocean. She taught herself to shoot underwater video to document sharks in their own world and share her sense of wonder with others. She launched a YouTube channel and built a huge following for her documentaries where she focuses on issues like inadequate protection for some shark species and the global shark fin (鳍) industry.

In 2014 Madison was the subject of the encouraging documentary Shark Girl, which introduced her to a global audience. In 2017 she appeared as an “Ocean Guardian” in the documentary Blue that explored a lot of threats to the world’s marine environments, including the damaging effect of the global shark fishery. The film encourages viewers to get involved and includes practical steps to guide them to do so. It shows Madison’s philosophy that the power of the individual to make a difference by their own direct action should never be underestimated.

【1】What did Madison do before getting her scuba diving certification?

    A.She went sailing often.

    B.She went boating alone.

    C.She practised free diving.

D.She protected the Great Barrier Reef.

【2】Why did Madison shoot underwater video to document sharks?

A.To record sharks’ world of wonder.

    B.To popularize her photography works.

C.To raise awareness of shark conservation.

D.To spare more time to accompany sharks.

【3】Which of the following may agree with Madison’s philosophy?

    A.Many hands make light work.

    B.Action speaks louder than words.

C.Together we can make a difference.

    D.Personal influence can’t be ignored.

【4】What’s the purpose of writing this passage?

    A.To introduce an influential conservationist.

    B.To advertise some encouraging documentaries.

C.To inspire people to protect whatever they love.

D.To inform people how to preserve marine wildlife.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Julia Koch began what was only her second year as a firstgrade teacher in a virtual classroom at Edgewood Elementary School. One September afternoon a few weeks into the school year, she received a call from Cynthia Phillips, who was having technical difficulties with her granddaughter’s tools for online learning.

Koch immediately noticed something was wrong with Phillips. They had spoken many times before, but Koch had never heard Phillips sound quite like this. Her words were so jumbled(混乱)that Koch could barely understand her, though she was able to make out that Phillips had fallen four times that day. Koch called her principal, Charlie, who assured her that he would call and check on Phillips himself.

Just like Koch, Charlie could barely understand Phillips. He suspected she might be having a stroke-he recognized the signs from when his own father had suffered one. Meanwhile, Charlie immediately became concerned that Phillips’s two grand children, ages six and eight, were probably home alone with her. Charlie asked his office manager to send an ambulance to the grandmother’s home. Then he called Mathews and Keytria, two deans in the school district, to tell them what was going on. Both of them dropped everything and drove to the family’s home.

When they pulled up less than ten minutes later, the doctors were treating Phillips while the two girls, looking visibly shaken, were outside with a neighbor. The quick response from Koch and Charlie saved Phillips’s life. She arrived at the hospital in time to get treatment and before chronic damage occurred.

    注意:续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

Koch and Charlie rush to the hospital to see Phillips.

Koch and Charlie were excited and proud of Phillips’ words.
