二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、E-scooters are an increasingly common site on Britain’s roads and pavements. With an electric motor attached, they have become the go-to vehicle of unruly teenagers everywhere.

But here are two things that might surprise you: First, Even though they’re quite clearly being used by thousands of people, because of the way the law is written, e-scooters cannot use the pavements and cycle lanes, because they have a motor. But they can’t use the roads as motor vehicles either, because they are not properly licensed or taxed. And the second thing: I think they are brilliant. Because energy density and efficiency has improved, it has made it possible to strap a battery onto a scooter, and actually have it carry you far enough to be useful.

I’m enthusiastic about scooters because I think they’re like a Swiss Army Knife, and can help solve multiple problems in society. They’re much greener than cars, which is great for the environment. They’re much smaller too, so take up less space on the road. They could even help ease Britain’s ongoing housing crisis. Because e-scooters could expand the distance in which it is reasonable to commute, making more housing accessible to the people who need it. And from a less high-minded perspective, it’s impossible to deny that they’re huge fun to ride.

In 2020, the government authorized local authorities to permit trials of rental scooter schemes around the country. The scooters are operated by a range of providers, and can be picked up off the street by scanning a QR-code with an app. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Scooter users are already annoying — so wouldn’t legalizing them make them even worse? I’m not convinced. If e-scooters were legalized, they could be properly licensed and regulated. I also think if privately owned scooters were allowed, it would also incentivize good behavior, as scooter owners rather than renters would be more likely to, for example, own a helmet and take good care of their own equipment.

There is some good news for the sceptics though. At the end of last year, the government scooted the question of legalization into the long grass, announcing that instead of making a decision, the regional trials would be extended until November. So, my dream of an e-scooter utopia might have to wait for a bit longer.

【1】Which of the following may be out of our expectation?

A.E-scooters are common on Britain’s roads.

B.E-scooters cannot be used everywhere legally.

C.The practical value of e-scooters is limited.

D.People prefer riding an e-scooter to using a car.

【2】Why do e-scoters have a positive effect on the housing crisis in Britain?

A.More houses are acceptable to more people.

B.E-scooters are great for the housing environment.

C.E-scooters take up less space in houses.

D.It’s huge fun to ride an e-scooter in the house.

【3】What does the underlined word “incentivize” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Encourage.

    B.Maintain.

    C.Restrict.

    D.Praise.

【4】What is the government’s attitude towards legalization of e-scooters?

    A.Favorable.

    B.Cautious.

    C.Opposed.

    D.Indifferent.

  • 23、   Hikers, soldiers and school children all know the burden of a heavy backpack. But now, researchers from three Chinese institutes have developed a prototype(雏形) that not only makes loads feel about 20% lighter, but also harvests energy from human movements to power small electronics.

The new backpack, reported in ACSNano, could be especially useful for athletes, explorers and disaster rescuers who work in remote areas without electricity, the researchers say.

Backpacks are widely used in everyday life for the hands-free carrying of loads. Over time, however, walking or running with a heavy bag can cause back and neck pain. Also, backpackers in wilderness areas or even those in cities who don’t have ready access to a charger might wish for a bag that could harvest the mechanical energy of walking to power portable electronics or health-monitoring sensors.

Previously, researchers have used triboelectric nanogenerators(TENG) –– small devices that convert mechanical energy into electricity –– to make energy-harvesting backpacks, but those bags had relatively low power outputs and they didn’t provide added benefits, such as load lightening or shock absorption. Zhong Lin Wang, Jia Cheng and their colleagues wanted to design a prototype that overcame these limitations.

To save labor and absorb shock, the researchers installed two elastomers(弹性体) into the backpack that stretched and shrank, keeping the bag steady as the wearer walked. This resulted in about a 20% reduced force on the wearer. Meanwhile, the movement between the frame of the backpack and its load during walking drove a TENG to convert mechanical energy into electricity, with 14% efficiency.

“The researchers showed that the bag could power LEDs, an electric watch and fluorescent tubes. Once some challenges, such as improving the energy conversion efficiency, are overcome, the backpack has promising potential as a power source for small-scale wearable and portable electronics, GPSs and health care sensors,” the researchers say.

【1】Who will be the most probable users of the new backpack?

    A.Doctors in the hospital.

    B.Workers in the factory.

    C.Researchers in the science lab.

    D.People traveling to unknown places.

【2】What is the function of Paragraph 4?

    A.Provide some background information.

B.Make comments about the new invention.

C.List the disadvantages of the new backpack.

D.Compare TENG and the new backpack.

【3】Which makes it easier for wearers to carry the backpack?

    A.TENG.

    B.Two elastomers.

    C.Fluorescent tubes.

    D.Health care sensors.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.The new backpack could hit the market soon.

B.The new backpack needs further improvement.

C.Consumers are in need of chargeable backpacks.

D.The researchers have difficulty meeting challenges.

  • 24、   Since we are social beingsthe quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships.

One strength of the human condition is our tendency to give and receive support from one another under stressful circumstances. Social support consists of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties.

Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily difficulties. People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over a range of illnessesfrom depression to heart diseaseshow that the presence of social support helps people protect themselves from illnessand the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.

Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. Firstfriendsrelativesand co-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others despite our faults and difficulties.

Secondother people often provide us with informational support. They help us to explain and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Thirdwe typically find social companionship supportive. Engaging in leisure-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting(转移……注意力)us from our worries and troubles. Finallyother people may give us instrumental support-financial aidmaterial resourcesand needed services-that reduces stress by helping us solve and deal with our problems.

1Research shows that people's physical and mental health has much to do with ______ .
