二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、People with genetic syndromes(综合症) sometimes have telltale (泄露秘密的) facial features, but using them to make a quick and cheap diagnosis can be tricky given there are hundreds of possible conditions they may have. A new neural network that analyzes photographs of faces can help doctors narrow down the possibilities.

Yaron Gurovich at biotechnology firm FDNA in Boston and his team built a neural network to look at the gestalt --- or overall impression --- of faces and return a list of the 10 genetic syndromes a person is most likely to have.

They trained the neural network, called DeepGestalt, on 17,000 images correctly labelled to match more than 200 genetic syndromes. The team then asked the AI to identify potential genetic disorders from a further 502 photos of people with such conditions. It included the correct answer 91 per cent of the time.

Gurovich and his team also tested the neural network’s ability to distinguish between the different genetic mutations (变异) that can lead to the same syndrome. They used photographs of people with Noonan syndrome, which can result from mutations in any one of five genes. DeepGestalt correctly identified the genetic source of the physical appearance 64 per cent of the time. It’s clearly not perfect, but it’s still much better than humans are at trying to do this.

As the system makes its assessments, the facial regions that were most helpful in the determination are highlighted and made available for doctors to view. This helps them to understand the relationships between genetic make-up and physical appearance.

The fact that the diagnosis is based on a simple photograph raises questions about privacy. If faces can reveal details about genetics, then employers and insurance providers could, in principle, secretly use such techniques to discriminate against people who have a high probability of having certain disorders. However, Gurovich says the tool will only be available for use by clinicians(临床医生). Clinically, this technology can help narrow down the search space of diagnosis and then confirm through checking genetic markers. Besides, it could perhaps add means of finding other people with the disease and, in turn, help find new treatments or cures.

【1】What’s the best title of this text?

    A.Tricky facial features

B.Faces let AI spot genetic disorders

D.It is much better than humans at trying to identify physical appearance.

【3】Why are certain facial regions highlighted in the assessment process?

    A.To help confirm the diagnosis.

B.To make the system more understandable.

C.To help the system quickly recognize people.

D.To help identify a condition and make a diagnosis.

【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards the technology?

  • 22、   You are supposed to be our future, a new chapter in the story of our lives, but I can't help being angry with you. Only a few weeks old, you're demanding and unreasoning and I'm struggling to see the good that you bring.

To start with, we got on with it, settling into a routine as we were trapped in nappies and nights when you wouldn't settle, but it started to wear me down. You hear about mothers with postnatal depression, but no one talks about the challenges a father has to face: working to put food on the table and a roof over our heads is tough when you've had only a couple of hours to sleep, and we're not supposed to need a break. Men are supposed to never cry. I hope that I can teach you a better way, my son. You're allowed to have weakness, and not keep everything locked up until it bursts.

It came to a head one night, when your mother found me in tears beside your bed. I'd never want to hurt you, but I was terrified by the thoughts I had. I'm doing the best I can for you, and I've gone and got the help I need. Your mother has been so strong, using your grandmother, uncles and friends to help keep our family together while I work through these feelings. The worst part for me is feeling that I'm failing your mother, and that I'm putting all of your needs on her. at a time when she needs help.

There's hope for the future, but it's a slow process. One day I hope you get to read this, and look at me with questioning eyes, because you can't see the man I am right now in the man I'll be in the future.

B.The social problems a baby brings.

C.The money pressure a family faces.

    D.The way a father educates a child.

【3】What is the worst part after having a baby?

    A.Not supporting his family.

    B.Making his wife disappointed.

C.Not preparing well for being a father.

D.Bursting out crying beside his son's bed.

【4】What can be inferred from the passage?

  • 23、   The world is a greener place than it was 20 years ago. Recent NASA satellites data(2000—2017) have shown that human activities in China and India dominate this greening of the planet, thanks to ambitious tree-planting programmes in China and intensive agriculture(集约农业) in both countries.

The researchers from Boston University found that global green leaf area has increased by 5 percent in the new century, an area equal to all of the Amazon rainforest. China alone accounts for 25% of the global net increase in leaf area with only 6.6% of global vegetated area. China's contribution comes in large part from its programmes to conserve and expand forests, taking up about 42 percent of the greening. The greening from farmlands in China is about 32%, but that in India is about 82%.

Rama Nemani, a research scientist at NASA's Ames Research Centre and a co-author of the study said, 'When the greening of the Earth was first observed, we thought it was due to a warmer, wetter climate and fertilisation from the added carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. But with data from NASA satellites, scientists realised that humans are also contributing, which was all against our expectations. '

Nemani sees a positive message in the new findings. 'Once people realise there is a problem, they tend to fix it, ' he said. 'In the 1970s and 1980s in India and China, the situation around vegetation loss was not good. In the 1990s, people realised it, and today things have improved. Humans are incredibly resilient. That is what we see in the satellite data. '

However, the researchers rang bells as well. They said that the gain in global greenness did not necessarily make up for the loss of natural vegetation in regions like Brazil and Indonesia.

1What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.The decreasing size of the Amazon rainforest.

B.China's bigger contribution to global greening.

C.Total global green leaf area in the new century.

D.China's programmes to conserve and expand forests.

2What surprised scientists regarding global greening?

A.Human activities. B.The level of fertilisation.

C.A warmer and wetter climate. D.Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

3What does the underlined word 'resilient' probably mean?

A.Good at making programmes. B.Suitable for analysing data.

C.Able to make corrections. D.Active in planting trees.

4What does the last paragraph imply?

A.It is urgent to protect global natural resources.

B.Much remains to be done for global greenness.

C.Brazil and Indonesia lose most of their vegetation.

D.Global greenness needs all countries to work together.

  • 24、   The International Day of Happiness, March 20th, is a United Nations project which has a serious purpose. The UN thinks happiness will only be for everyone when the people of the world are equal.

On this date, the centre of the sun is directly above the Earth’s equator, which is called an equinox (春分). On the equinox, day and night last for almost equal time all over the Earth. The equinox is felt by everyone on the planet, which matches perfectly with the idea behind the Day of Happiness. Since 2013, the Day of Happiness has been celebrated in all 193 United Nations member states. The United Nations invites each person of any age to join in celebration of the International Day of Happiness.

The idea goes back to 1972, when the King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, said that they should measure a country’s progress by its happiness and not just how much it produces or how much money it makes. He called it Gross National Happiness (GNH). Again, it is more than just a nice idea. Bhutan developed a system to measure happiness based on things like people’s psychological health, their general health, how they spend their time, where they live, their education and their environment. People in Bhutan answer about 300 questions, and the results are compared every year to measure progress. The government uses the results and the ideas behind GNH to make decisions for the country.

In 2011,a UN adviser called Jayme Illien suggested the idea of an international day to increase happiness. His plan was accepted by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2012. Jayme was born in Calcutta, India, and he became an orphan when he was a child. He was adopted by an American nurse, Anna Belle Illien. She travelled the world to help orphans and she took Jayme with her. He saw children like him, but who were not as lucky as him because they were often escaping wars or they were very poor. He wanted to do something about it, so he worked in the areas of children’s and human rights.

The UN measures and compares the happiness of different countries in the World Happiness Report. It bases its report on social, economic and environmental well-being. The UN also sets goals for countries to achieve to increase happiness because it says happiness is a basic human right. Happiness should not be something people have because they are lucky to live in a place where they have basic things like peace, education and access to healthcare.

【1】What do we know about the Day of Happiness?

A.People all over the world celebrate it.

B.It’s a day to make people equal and happy.

C.It’s on the same day when the equinox happens for everyone.

D.Different countries celebrate the Day of Happiness on different dates.

B.What happiness means to people in Bhutan.

C.How the idea of the Day of Happiness started.

D.When people began to celebrate the Day of Happiness.

【3】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

A.Jayme Illien’s childhood experience influenced his choice of work.

B.UN thinks happiness depends largely on basic things people have.

C.UN has followed exactly the work of Bhutan to measure happiness.

D.Jayme Illien proposed the idea of the International Day of Happiness.
