  • 26、How to Sleep Well

Get some exercise at least three hours before bed.

Go for a run, hit the gym, take long walk, or do some stretches to help you get your heart rate going before you ease into bed. 1 Doing this at least three hours before bed will work. If you work out shortly before bed, then you will feel more awake than ever.

    2

If you want to make it easier for you to fall asleep, then you have to get used to falling asleep at around the same time every night and waking up around the same time every morning. That way, your body will get used to feeling more tired at the same time every night.

    Stick to the fifteen-minute rule.

3 If you’ve been lying in bed for more than fifteen minutes and are unable to fall asleep because you’re not tired, then try something else. If you continue to lie there, your mind will continue churning, and you may even work yourself up and feel even more awake. Once fifteen minutes have passed and you’re no closer to falling asleep, do something else. Read a magazine. Pace around your room. Sit up and stare at your hands. 4

Think about everything you did that day.

Another way to calm your mind is to go through everything you did that day, up to the most boring little detail. Try to break it down hour by hour and see how specific you can get and how many things you can end up remembering. 5

A.Don’t sleep late in the morning to stick to your regular habit.

B.This will work out your body and will make you more tired.

C.Do something new and you will start to fall asleep gradually.

D.Chances are that this alone will be boring enough to put you to sleep.

    E.Make your bed more comfortable.

    F.This rule is simple.

G.Go to bed around the same time every night.

  • 27、   Many students want to know the best ways to improve their learning. Here are a few useful methods.

    Focus

One of the best ways to organize your study session is to use the Pomodoro Technique. 1 The idea is to use a timer. Let's say, you set the timer for 20 minutes, and focus only on your studies during that time. You cannot check email, or do anything aside from your task. When the timer goes off, you can reward yourself by listening to some music or having a drink of tea.

    Test yourself

When you are studying, you should test yourself often. 2 You can also find all kinds of online tests for many subjects.

    Interleaving

3 For example, in one study period you might spend time testing yourself on vocabulary words and then test yourself on grammar. Or, if studying math, you could mix multiplication(乘法) and division(除法)problems. It may be better for long-term learning.

    Teaching

Teaching is also a powerful way to learn. 4 Some did not expect to have to teach information, while others did. When they actually teach a lesson, they develop a deeper understanding of the material.

    Closing thoughts

You can create your own plan based on what you need to learn. You might organize your study periods with the Pomodoro technique. Then, you can test yourself and interleave different topics. There are many choices. 5

A.Researchers compared different groups of students.

B.In other words, they only study one topic at a time.

C.This method is a technique that means you mix different topics.

D.All of these techniques can be put together to make a powerful study plan.

E.It is a powerful, but simple method that helps people focus on a task.

F.When you focus and do tasks that are at the right difficulty level, your brain will become tired.

G.If you are using a textbook, then you can do practice questions from the end of each chapter.

  • 28、   We live in a sweet world. The average American kids consume more than 20 teaspoons of sugar per day. 1 We all know that too much sugar isn’t good for us. But do we know it can be poisonous? A team of researchers at the University of Utah used mice to conduct a study on the negative effects of sugar. 2.

During the 58-week-long study, mice were fed the diet containing 25% more sugar. 3 The team found that these mice were twice as likely to die as the mice fed the similar diet without sugar.

Though the mice did not show signs of obesity or high blood pressure, they gave birth to 25% fewer offspring(后代)than the other mice. Scientists often use mice for research because they have something similar to humans. Findings from this study show negative effects that are not as obvious as weight gains or heart problems. 4

Different types of sugar have different effects on the human body. Some of the sugar we consume comes from foods we might expect — candy, soda f and cookies. 5 To help cut down on extra sugar consumption, nutrition experts suggest looking at the ingredients on food packages. Cutting sugar out of the American diet altogether may be difficult. But making the effort to control our sugar desires will provide for a truly sweeter future.

A.But much of the sugar that we eat is hidden.

B.They found it could have serious side effects on people’s health.

C.A big bowl of milk and cereal turn he a great way to start the day.

D.And adults eat 50% more sugar today than they did in the 1970s.

E.Some kids’ foods are high in sugar hut low in vitamins and minerals.

F.This percentage is equal to a healthy human diet along with three cans of soda daily.

G.But large amounts of sugar can cause long-term health problems and even shorten lives.

  • 29、   When you’ve finished your studies at school and college, do you feel like a well-earned rest? If you’re about to take up a course at university, you’ll want to recharge your batteries and have some fun. But how long should you do that for? 1

A year off—also called a gap year—is a period of time when a student takes a break before going to university. 2 But there’s now a focus on making the most of this break from academic life. Long gone are the days of just hanging out on a beach or traveling abroad. 3 Doing something productive is exactly what students are being encouraged to do because doing more purposeful things helps them acquire skills to use when competing for a place at university.

4 A student, Tom, told the BBC “it would have been too expensive and it’s not something that I would have been able to rely on my parents or family members for.” But some experts say that it needn’t burn a hole in your pocket. You don’t need to travel far and you can even earn money by doing paid work.

For those who do have the funds, a combination of working, volunteering and travelling is undoubtedly an amazing opportunity. 5 It also gives you time to think whether university is right for you.

    A.It’s not a new idea.

B.It is important to have fun.

C.Now the idea of taking a year off seems to be the thing to do.

D.There’s a common thought that gap years are only for rich students

E.A gap year is now more about gaining skills that will help you in later life.

F.It increases confidence and independence and gives you a chance to learn new skills.

G.While the benefits of taking a gap year are clear, some students worry they can’t afford it.
