26、 This year I’m buying presents for 16 children, as well as my own daughter, Mia-Grace, who will be two on Christmas Day. My tree will be beautifully decorated, I’m bringing the turkey to the family Christmas lunch and having an open house activity on Boxing Day. And the whole thing’s only going to cost me £150.
I’ve been careful with money since I was a teenager, for I came from a poor family with many children. I had to drop out of high school to earn money to support myself. I remember well that I went a bit mad back then when I got my first credit card and my parents had to leave me from home and cared little for me from then, which taught me a real lesson.
We’re very careful now and we don’t overspend or owe anything on credit cards. I work for an electrician and my husband Neil, 33, works in the construction business. We’re concerned about our jobs because our companies are quiet at the moment.
We’ve also been hit by rising prices, particularly food, petrol, gas and electricity. Everyone I know is worried. One of my friends’ husbands has just gone self-employed and if he doesn’t work, they have no money coming in.
Christmas has been playing on my mind for the past three or four months. We decided on a budget of £150 because that’s just under my weekly wage and it meant we could afford Christmas while using Neil’s salary for our essential bills.
We quickly realized that we buy some things every year just for the sake of it. Even though we have lots of decorations already, we usually buy something new for the tree but this Christmas we’re not going to. We’ve already got our tree – a big man-made one which I bought half-price in the January sales. It will last us for years.
After all, no one can escape from this financial crisis which is spreading throughout the globe.

27、If asked if space exploration should continue, most Americans would give an immediate response either in favor of continuing or in favor of ending space exploration. A common response would be that space exploration is a waste of money. An average American, uneducated on the subject, might believe that the government is wasting billions of dollars on the research that has no merit.
Someone strange to the subject might say that a space shuttle goes up once in a while and that is about all that happens. Research is ongoing and continues when there are no shuttles being launched. This also costs the government money. Does the extreme cost of space exploration make sense?
One argument is that the government is wasting money on the research not being used on Earth. Actually, the money goes to workers and scientists that support National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) missions ( 任务), and goes to major companies that play important roles in major sectors of the US economy. Boeing is a partner of NASA for aircraft, the same company that makes commercial aircraft for the airline industry.
Another benefit to continuing space exploration is the many spinoff ( 衍生的) technologies it provides. The artificial heart resulted from experiments on the space shuttle. The handheld Jaws of Life used to save victims from car accidents originated from the system used to separate the space shuttle from its booster rockets. Insulation in homes that keeps them warm and energy efficient is based on the technology used to insulate the space shuttle.
There are direct benefits to the economy provided by NASA missions as well as spinoff technologies. These advances are found in food, building materials, medical procedures and the vehicles we drive. While it can be proven that billions of dollars that could be used elsewhere is being spent on space exploration, the benefits it provides outweigh the terrible aspects. As a matter of fact, the money spent helps to improve the quality of our lives.

28、 We all use different ways to remember ideas, facts and things we need to store. Remembering is an extremely important part of our learning experience. Information process, storage and recall(回顾)encourage purposeful learning.
But the brain doesn’t store everything we want or need for future use. It makes choices and tends to remember information that forms a memorable pattern. Things you learned recently can be particularly difficult to remember because they haven’t taken root in your mind.
“Forgetting allows us to remember what is really important to our survival. We forget much of what we read, watch, and think directly every day.” writes John Medina in his book, Brain Rules.
How do you avoid losing 90%of what you’ve learned? An inspiring writer and speaker Zig Ziglar once said:“Repetition is the mother of learning, the father of action, which makes it the architect of accomplishment.”
Repetition has been a remembering skill for ages. When you hear or read something once, you don’t really learn it-at least not well enough to store the new information for long. The right kind of repetition can do wonders for your memory. People learn or remember better by repeating things or getting exposed to information many times. Others repeat particular steps or processes deliberately a number of times or even years to become better at certain skills.
Daniel Coyle explains in his book, The Little Book of Talent:“...closing the book and writing a summary, even short ones, forces you to figure out the key points, process and organize those ideas so they make sense, and write them on the page. When you pick it back up weeks later, reread all of your notes or highlights to strengthen the ideas even further.”
People learn by repeating things. Better learning is a repetition process. Every time we repetitively access something we already know, we increase the memory’s stored value.
【1】Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A.The brain tends to store 90% of the things we learn.
B.The fresher the information is, the easier to remember.
C.Thinking is more important than remembering in study.
D.The brain tends to choose and keep what it thinks important.
【2】How does the writer prove his opinion?
A.By giving examples. B.By listing numbers.
C.By borrowing words of experts. D.By providing scientific finding.
【3】What does Daniel Coyle want to say in his book?
A.You can’t pay too much attention to repetition.
B.Summarizing is a very effective learning tool.
C.Forgetting forces human brain to make choices.
D.Regular repetition helps to form good habits.
【4】What may be the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To summarize and stress his opinion. B.To ask the readers to use the skills to learn.
C.To introduce his opinion and attract readers. D.To tell readers to increase the value of memory.
【5】Which do you think is the best title of the passage?

C.Fighting Against Forgetting D.Repeat to Remember
29、 If you're a junk food lover, you will know this:No matter where you shop or what brand you buy, when you tear(open a bag of potato chips, it's almost always half filled. This can be quite disappointing. I always hope those bags are quite full. But there's actually a god reason for this--and no, the food companies are not pulling a fast one on you.
In the manufacturing industry. “slack fill” is the empty space that's placed around a product on purpose. The idea is that the extra room can "protect" your Lays or Tostitos(brands of chips). The trip from the production machine to the market can be grille long and hard!If it weren't for "slack fill', your chips would probably look more like breadcrumbs(面包屑).
But wait, there's more, Think that the bag of potato chips was filled up with air?It actually is nitrogen gas(氮气). Chips manufacturers fill bags with this gas to help kelp chips fresh If it were filled with regular air, the chips would likely turn wet and soft in 1994, scientists found that exposing chips to nitrogen not only heaped to prolong the shelf life(保质期), but also made them stay crisp(脆的)What's more, nitrogen is a natural gas and completely harmless.
Still feel you are tricked by the empty bag? There's a way to tell the amount of potato chips in your snick bug before you break it open. In 1966, the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act was passed. which requires manufacturers to show the net weight of their products' contents. When shopping for your next bag of potato chips, pay attention to the net weight that's printed on the bag. This way you'll be able to know if it is worth your money.
