  • 26、When and why did you start running?

It was March 2017. My family had gone through a terrible experience. My nephew Peter had his arms and legs cut to save his life from the after-effects of meningitis(脑膜炎).1. I needed to get fit and healthy for my family, to become a role model for them. Peter inspires me to live life to the full: he doesn’t let his disability get in his way!

What race result are you most pleased with?

I'm proud of all the races I’ve done. I never thought I'd be able to call myself a runner. I now regularly race and love bringing home medals for my daughters to be inspired by.2!

    What's next?

3 .We started a campaign called Hope 4 Peter and support has been amazing: our local community helped raise ₤240k for prosthetic legs(假肢)and physiotherapy. We’ve had huge support from Meningitis Now and Time is Precious too, and I’ll be raising money for them, but also pushing Peter around the full course.4 .

What does running mean to you?

I’ve suffered with mental health problems and running gives me a clear head and removes negative (消极的)thoughts and stress.5. We should be so grateful for our bodies and what amazing things they can do!

    B. The London Half Marathon

    C. That makes me keep running

  • 27、   A California family drives a car that could help protect the environment. When Jon and Sandy go to the store or to their daughters’ soccer games, they drive in high-tech style. They drive a $1 million, fuel-cell-powered car. It may be the world’s most expensive car and one of the most environmentally friendly cars. The FCX is the first fuel-cell-powered car to be used by a family anywhere in the world. The FCX uses hydrogen and oxygen for fuel. Car makers have been working to develop vehicles that are better for the environment. They are developing cars that use fuel other than gasoline.

And then what is fuel cell technology? Fuel cell technology works by changing the chemicals hydrogen and oxygen into water. This process produces electricity, and water vapor which comes out of the exhaust pipe. Most cars release dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Many scientists say these gases are major contributors to global warming. “The FCX is driven just like any other vehicle on the road, but without the gases which pollute the environment,” scientists say. Fuel cell technology has been around since the 1800s, but scientists have yet been to perfect it. They say it may take years before the technology is ready for widespread use. Another earth-friendly car is already on the market. Hybrid cars use both gasoline and an electric motor. They are becoming more popular with customers because they cut pollution and improve fuel efficiency.

1Which of the following about the FCX is not true?

    A. It lets out dangerous gases to pollute the air.

    B. It may be the most expensive car in the world.

    C. It is one of the most environmentally friendly cars.

    D. It uses hydrogen and oxygen for fuel other than gasoline.

2According to the passage, what is the major cause for global warming?

    A. gases from FCX. B. gases from cars.

    C. hydrogen and oxygen. D. water vapor from cars.

3From the passage, we know that fuel cell technology _______.

    A. works by water B. works by electricity

    C. has been widely used since the 1800s D. has a history for over two hundred years

4What can we infer from the passage?

    A. there will be no gasoline for cars.

    B. global warming has been stopped.

    C. people can’t afford to buy cars in the future.

    D. future cars will be environmentally friendly.

  • 28、Open Hearts to life

We often close ourselves off when unfortunate events happen in our live. We try to reduce the hurt and pain by pretending it doesn't exist, 1We need to learn to open our hearts to the potentials of life and let the world soften us.

Whenever we start to let our fears and seriousness get the best of us, we should take a step back and re-evaluate our behavior. The items listed below are the ways you can open your heart more fully and completely.

    Breathe into pain

Whenever a painful situation arises in your life, try to embrace it instead of running away.2 When we run away from sadness, it will get stronger and more real. By making use of our breath, we soften our experiences and allow more newness and greater experiences to blossom.

    3

I know we’ve all felt decisions or actions that we had to take simply due to our "gut" impulses: when asked, we can’t explain the reasons behind doing so--just a deep knowing that it had to get done. To start this process, take few deep breaths and then ask, “Heart, what decision should I make here? What action feels the most right?”

See what comes up, then engage and evaluate the outcome.

    Spend time alone.

For most of our lives we’re surrounded by people: our friends, colleagues, peers, family members, and loved ones, and strangers. How often do we really spend time alone? When you spend time in solitude, you're free from the influences of other people, and can truly open yourself and explore whatever you’d like. See where your thoughts take you.4

It might be painful or even scary at first, but by opening yourself up to these new feelings, you’ll add a whole new layer of depth, experience, and understanding into your life.

    Get outside of yourself

This may seem a little contradictory to the last tip, but in reality, they actually work hand-in-hand. After you’ve explored the depths of yourself, you come away with a new understanding. Now, it's time to share that -not through telling others, but through being with others.

When you’re in a group of people, try to give them your full energy and attention so you can understand them just as you did yourself.5Lose yourself in the beauty of others; see what they can teach you about yourself.

    A.Embrace the uncomfortable.

B.Ask your heart what it wants

C.In the end, though, we can't hide from ourselves

D.We should take a step back and re-evaluate our behavior

E.When the sadness strikes, take a deep breath and lean into it.

F.The golden ticket here is to not let yourself become distracted; just see what it's like to be alone.

G.Appreciate their uniqueness, as if they are an extension of you.

Note that there is one word more than you need.

    A Bad Idea

Think you can walk, dive, take phone calls, e-mail and listen to music at the same time? Well, New York's new law says you can't. And you'll be 1 $S100 if you do it on a New York City street.

The law went into force last month, following research and a(n) 2number of accidents that involved people using electronic gadgets when crossing the street.

Who's to3 ? Scientists say that our multitasking abilities are limited.

"We are under the impression that our brain can do more than it often can," says Rene Marois, a neuroscientist in Tennessee. “But a major limitation is the inability to4on two things at once".

The young people are often considered the great multitaskers. However, an Oxford University research suggests this idea is open to question. A group of 18-to 21-year-olds and a group of 35-to 39-year-olds were given 90 seconds to translate5into numbers, using a simple code. The younger group did 10 percent better when not interrupted. But when both groups were interrupted by a phone call or a(n) 6message, the older group matched the younger group in speed and 7.

It is difficult to measure the productivity8by multitaskers. But it is probably a lot. Jonathan Spire, chief analyst at Basex. a business-research firm, estimates the cost of interruptions to the American economy at nearly $650 billion a year.

The9is based on surveys with office workers. The surveys conclude that 28 percent of the workers' time was spent on interruptions and10time before they returned to their main tasks.
