26、 The San Diego Splash senior women’s basketball team plays three-on-three in 30-minute half-court games — looking at the score-board and it doesn’t take long to realize that there’s nothing “senior” about these athletes.
The Splash may be the oldest team under the San Diego Senior Women’s Basketball Association (players must be 80 or over to join), but its members play to win and have won two championships (冠军称号) at the National Senior Games. Nine women are on the record, including Meg Skinner and Grace Larson — both of whom are 91.
Born in the 1920s and 1930s, Larson and the rest of her teammates are making up for the lost time and missed chances. “I was 80 when I got my first basketball shoes, and I was excited,” Larson said. Players in the Splash didn’t just wake up on their 80th birthdays and decide to join the team, and many of them have been playing basketball for many years, both as players in the San Diego Senior Women’s Basketball Association and other organizations.
Since it’s medically proved that seniors’ sports can lead to a longer and livelier life, it comes as no surprise that many Splash players have lived longer. “A lot of my childhood friends thought I was crazy to play basketball at 66,” explained 87-year-old Marge Carl. “They thought I’ll break an arm or a leg, but I’m the only one surviving of my childhood friends. They’re all gone, every one of them.”
“Seniors have to join us,” Carl told a San Diego newspaper. “They can’t sit in a room watching TV. That’s a death warning.” With over 6 million views, the videos about the Splash are very popular. “A friendship, a sisterhood, a family” is how Larson describes her team —“It’s the nicest group of people from all walks of life.”

27、 As the American population ages, the demand for services and care for older adults is growing, which accounts for the reason why SenCura is very popular. It’s a company that provides non-medical at-home care for seniors in the northern Virginia area.
But when Hollie, one of SenCura’s professional caregivers, is not around, Robertson still has a caregiver, a robot named Rudy. “You can have a conversation with him. And (he’s) somebody to talk to and who responds.” Rudy also tells jokes and plays games and dances with Robertson. In addition to keeping Robertson mentally and physically active, Rudy provides contact with emergency services 24 hours a day automatically when Robertson is in danger. He watches for lost items, reminds Robertson about her doctor’s appointments and tells her when it is time to take her medicine.
Anthony Nunez is the founder of INF Robotics, the company that created Rudy. He says, “As I grew older, I realized we weren’t the only family facing this problem. There are thousands of families facing the same issue --- most cases even worse, where they have a beloved one that they’re taking care of and the cost becomes an issue. So what we wanted to do was design a robot that’s easy to use, designed specifically for seniors, but also affordable."
SenCura’s Cliff Glier says the robot Rudy adds to what in-home caregivers do for the growing population of seniors who prefer to age at home---with a little help from friends. But Rudy is not a competitor of human caregivers. He says the robot Rudy is there to help but cannot do all the things that caregivers do, like bathing and dressing seniors.

28、My teacher,Mr.August J.Bachmann, was the most influential teacher I ever had.
I had gotten into trouble in his class:Another student had pushed me for fun,and I became angry and began to hit him.Mr.Bachmann stopped the fight, but instead of sending me to the office,he sat me down and asked a simple question,“Penna, why are you wasting your life? Why aren't you going to college?”
I didn't know anything about colleges or scholarships. No one had ever considered that a fatherless boy from the poorest neighborhood had a future. That day, instead of rushing off for lunch,he stayed and explained possible education options to me.At the end of our talk,he sent me to see a secretary who had a child at a state college. This was in 1962 at Emerson High School in Union City,New Jersey.
Well,55 years have passed, and what have I done with the knowledge he gave me?I gained a PhD from Fordham University when I was only 29.I taught English and social studies and then moved up the chain of command from teacher to principal(校长).
I've sat on the board for Magnet Schools of America and represented that organization at the United Nations.I've won a number of great educational awards. But where would I be if a truly caring teacher had not taken the time out of his lunch period to speak to me?It was without question only his confidence in me that helped me forward.
I have repaid his kindness hundreds of times by encouraging misguided youngsters to aim higher. If I have saved any children,it is because of him.If I have been a successful educator,it is because I had a great role model in Mr.Bachmann.
