  • 27、4 Things that Can Help to Boost Your Immune System During the Coronavirus Outbreak

There is an exception to the general rule that supplements (补充剂) won’ t really help prevent illness, and that’ s vitamin D. Research has shown that the immune system needs vitamin D to fight off viruses-while it won’t protect you from getting the virus. It could reduce the severity of the illness and help make recovery easier. 【1】. It’s also found in some foods, including fatty fish like salmon and in small amounts in beef liver, eggs, cheese, and mushrooms.

【2】While you’ re asleep, your body uses that time to do recovery and repair of essential functions, including your immune system. Just one night of poor sleep can reduce your immune cells by as much as 70%, research shows.

Exercise can keep your body functioning well, since research shows that it reduces inflammation (炎症) and supports infection-fighting cells. 【3】 Body movements like burpees, lunges, push-ups and more can give you a quick full-body workout with no equipment.

Stress can also make a big difference for your immune system, particularly when there are alarming or uncertain events happening in the world around you. Yes, this means managing fears — good strategies include taking breaks from social media and relying on trustworthy media sources for information. 【4】

There are many ways to get relaxed. 【5】 Maybe that’s taking a walk outside, curling up with a favorite book, or taking time to reflect or practice yoga or another comforting habit each day.

A.You can get vitamin D naturally through sunlight.

B.Your first line of defense is to choose a healthy lifestyle.

C.How you choose to relax will vary from person to person.

D.Both of them can help you avoid panic and misinformation.

E.One of the free ways to stay healthy is getting enough sleep.

F.Your immune system does a remarkable job of defending you against disease.

G.If you’re staying out of the gym, there are plenty of ways to still get your sweat on.

  • 28、   Getting less sleep has become a bad habit for most American kids. According to a new survey(调查) by the National Sleep Foundation, 51% of kids aged 10 to 18 go to bed at 10 pm or later on school nights, even though they have to get up early. Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7- to 12-year-olds said they felt tired during the day, and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school.

How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age. Babies need a lot of rest: most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is ideal(理想的). But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10- to 12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime? Watch TV.

“More children are going to bed with TVs on, and there are more opportunities(机会) to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone,” says Dr. Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher at Brown University Medical School. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep. Other experts say part of the problem is chemical. Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones not only make teenagers’ bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 pm.

Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to. Three years ago, schools in Edina, Minnesota, changed the start time from 7:25 am to 8:30 am. Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results.

1What is the general idea of the first paragraph?

    B.American kids have bad habits.

C.Most Americans kids get less sleep and the bad influence of it.

D.American kids feel asleep in class.

2Which of the following statements is correct?

A.When you sleep depends on your age.

B.Most children watch TV before they sleep.

C.Some children are lacking in sleep.

D.Adults will be healthier if they get more sleep.

3Why do children find it hard to fall asleep?

A.They get too excited before 11p.m.

    B.Hormones get high at night.

    C.Their bodies develop adult characteristics.

D.They may watch too much TV.

4What is the solution to the problem of sleepiness among children?

    A.Urging them to sleep earlier.

B.Not allowing them to watch TV before sleep.

    C.Getting up later than before.

    D.Not going to school earlier.

5What is the author’s attitude toward the change of school start time?

    A.Objective B.Indifferent

    C.Positive D.Negative

  • 29、   For some people, music is no fun at all. About four percent of the population is what scientists call “amusic.” People who are amusic are born without the ability to appreciate music or recognize musical notes (音调). Amusic people often cannot tell the difference between two-songs. Amusics can only hear the difference between two notes if they are far apart on the musical scale.

As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. Their ability to enjoy music sets them apart from others. It can be difficult for other people to identify with their condition. In fact, most people cannot begin to understand what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping mall can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics intentionally stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in withdrawal and social isolation. “I used to hate parties,” says Margaret, a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify this unusual condition.

Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from the brains of people who can appreciate music. The difference is complicated, and it doesn’t involve defective hearing. Amusics can understand other nonmusical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding ordinary speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can’t sec certain colors.

Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed (诊断). For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. Now she knows that she is not alone. There is a name for her condition. That makes it easier for her to explain. “When people invite me to a concert, I just say, ‘No thanks. I’m amusic,’” says Margaret. “I just wish I had learned to say that when I was seventeen and not seventy.”

1Which of the following is true of amusics?

    A. Listening to music is far from enjoyable for them.

    B. They love places where they are likely to hear music.

    C. They can easily tell two different songs apart.

    D. Their situation is well understood by musicians.

2According to paragraph 3, a person with “defective hearing” is probably one who _____.

    A. dislikes listening to speeches B. can hear anything nonmusical

    C. has a hearing problem D. lacks a complicated hearing system

3In the last paragraph, Margaret expressed her wish that _____.

    A. her problem with music had been diagnosed earlier

    B. she were seventeen years old rather than seventy

    C. her problem could be easily explained

    D. she were able to meet other amusics

    A. Amusics’ strange behaviours.
