二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、There is more that comes with older age than greying hair and wrinkled skin When humans reach their later years, they favour more established friends and their social circle is reduced.

Now, for what appears to be the first time, scientists have seen the same behaviour in another species. Twenty years of observations of chimpanzees (猩猩) reveal that older males choose to hang out with their long-term friends at the expense of other relationships.

The researchers studied 78, 000 hours of observations made between 1996 and 2016 that followed the social interactions of 21 male chimpanzees between the ages of 15 and 58 years old. They classified the chimps’ relationships depending on the amount of time they sat with others and groomed (梳毛) them. They then rated the various pairings as mutual (相互的) friendships, where both chimps seemed to enjoy the relationship; one-sided friendships, where one chimp was more keen to be friends than the other; and non-friendships, where neither chimp showed interest in the other.

When the scientists looked at the patterns of friendships, they found that the older chimps had more mutual friendships and fewer one-sided friendships than younger chimps. Another feature seen in older humans was also spotted in the chimps. As the males got older, their levels of aggression (挑衅) tailed off, meaning they started fewer fights and tended to intimidate others in their group less often.

The observations have left the researchers puzzled. According to an idea in psychology known as socioemotional selectivity theory, or SST, older humans prefer more positive relationships because they are aware time is running out. But many animal experts argue that chimpanzees lack the human sense of mortality (死亡), suggesting something else is driving the behaviour.

Robin Dunbar, a professor of evolutionary psychology at the University of Oxford, said in humans, the decline in social circles with age is due to declining social motivation to get out and meet people combined by lack of opportunity. In chimpanzees, as older males compete less for mates, they may focus on close, reciprocal (互惠的) relationships with trusted partners, she said.

【1】What do older male chimpanzees favour?

    A.Old friendships.

    B.New bonds.

    C.Greying hair.

    D.Wrinkled skin.

【2】How did the researchers draw their conclusion about chimpanzees?

    A.By turning to other scientists.

    B.By introducing a new concept.

    C.By forming relationships with them.

    D.By analyzing two decades’ observations.

【3】What does the underlined word “intimidate” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Threaten.

    B.Motivate.

    C.Defend.

    D.Accompany.

【4】According to Robin Dunbar, what accounts for declining social circles in chimpanzees?

    A.Awareness of time.

    B.Less competition for mates.

    C.Low motivation for socialization.

D.Lack of the human sense of mortality.

  • 27、Not long ago, Egypt marked the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Suez Canal. The canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. It helped speed world trade between the East and the West. But the man-made waterway has also helped speed the rise of other things, such as invasive(入侵的)non-native species (物种). Scientists say the invasive creatures have damaged the Mediterranean’s environment and caused native species to disappear.

The number of non-native creatures has risen since the Suez Canal was widened in 2015. The “New Suez Canal” has raised concerns in Europe and brought disagreement from many Mediterranean countries. Bella Galil is an Israeli biologist who has studied the Mediterranean for over 30 years. She says much of the ecological(生态的)damage cannot be repaired. She said urgent action is needed to ease the effects of the invasive fish and other sea life.

Galil works at Tel Aviv University’s Steinhardt Museum of Natural History. She noted that the widening and deepening of the Suez Canal has created a “moving aquarium” of species. These creatures could make coastal waters almost unusable for human beings. Galil believes the number of invasive species has reached 400. That is twice the number 30 years ago. She said this is a “historic example of the dangers of unintended consequences.”

Israel is now dealing with huge numbers of poisonous(有毒的) jellyfish that affect coastal power centers and keep people from visiting the seashore. Other poisonous species, such as the lionfish and silver-cheeked toadfish, are also appearing.

Galil said the problems of invasive species can be compared to those of climate change, pollution and over-fishing. She argues that the new species have caused a major “restructuring” of the environment. This has endangered native species.

Some experts have suggested that increasing salt levels in the canal itself could create a barrier(障碍物) that would keep invasive species out.

【1】What lesson can we learn from the effects of the Suez Canal?

    A.Seeing is believing.

    B.Every coin has two sides.

    C.Let nature take its course.

    D.Everyone makes mistakes.

【2】What’s the attitude of many Mediterranean countries towards the“New Suez Canal"?

    A.Uncaring.

    B.Unclear.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Against.

【3】What is the ecological environment like after the Suez Canal reconstruction?

A.It is from bad to worse.

    B.It remains the same.

    C.It improves a great deal.

D.It has become a completely new one.

【4】Why did Galil mention climate change, pollution and over-fishing in paragraph 5?

    A.To add some background information.

B.To stress the harm of invasive species.

C.To solve the problem of invasive species.

D.To compare their similarities and differences.

  • 28、Culture Shock

Culture shock refers to the anxiety and feelings(of surprise, uncertainty, confusion, etc.)felt when people have to operate within a different and unknown cultural or social environment, such as a foreign country.

Generally speaking,we could say that there are four stages of culture shock. The first stage is called“the honeymoon”1And everything seems to be wonderful and everybody seems to be so nice to you.

The next stage is“the hostility stage(排斥期)”.In this stage, you begin to notice not everything is as good as you originally thought it was.2Moreover,people don't treat you like a guest anymore.

Then you come to the third stage called“recovery”.In this stage, you start to feel more positive.3The whole situation starts to become more pleasant. Now you begin to learn to adapt yourself to it.

The last stage of culture shock is called“adjustment".4You have learned enough about the new culture. The things that originally made you feel uncomfortable or strange are now things that you understand. Now you have adjusted to the new culture and you feel comfortable.

Not all individuals visiting another country will experience all these four stages.5It also occurs within cultures as individuals move from place to place or from one setting to another.

A.You should communicate with people more often.

B.And you try to learn everything you don't understand.

C.You become tired of many things about the new culture.

D.Friends should help each other to deal with culture shock.

E.In addition, culture shock is not limited to the overseas visitors.

  • 29、   The United States space agency will send a spacecraft to explore the sun more closely than ever before on Saturday. NASA'S Parker Solar Probe(探测器)will fly through the hot solar atmosphere and come within just 6 million kilometers of the sun's surface.

The Parker Probe will get almost seven times closer to the sun than earlier spacecraft. To do this, it will fly past Venus(金星)seven times over seven years. Each pass will change the probe's orbit by providing a gravity push. It will move ever closer to the sun and straight into the corona(日冕), the sun's outermost atmosphere.

By exploring the sun's corona, scientists hope to learn why it is hundreds of times hotter than the sun's surface. They will also study what drives the solar wind.

The project was proposed in 1958, the same year NASA was established. Now, "it's becoming a reality," said project manager Andy Driesman.

The Parker spacecraft has a 2.4 meter heat shield(护罩)that is 11 centimeters thick. It is made of two carbon sheets. The front has a white coating to reflect sunlight. It is expected to shine red when it experiences the extreme solar heat. Almost everything on the spacecraft will be behind this shield to keep its scientific instruments relatively cool.

Besides, the spacecraft will also be traveling at a high speed. The probe will reach 690,000 kilometers per hour in the corona. The spacecraft will make its first flight past Venus in early October. Its first pass by the sun is expected in November.

The Parker Solar Probe is the first NASA spacecraft to be named after someone who is still alive. Eugene Parker is a 91-year-old professor at the University of Chicago. He predicted the existence of solar wind 60 years ago. He plans to be at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in the southern state of Florida to see the launch.

1What's the advantage of the Parker Probe compared to the earlier ones?

A.It can change the orbit by flying past the sun.

B.It can get closer to the sun and into the corona.

C.It can study the effect of solar wind.

D.It can fly through the hot solar atmosphere without protection.

2What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Human had little achievements in exploring the sun.

B.Eugene Parker is the first one to study the sun.

C.The Parker Probe has to get close to the sun with the help of Venus.

D.Human can get close to the sun's surface within 6 million kilometers today.

3What can we learn about Eugene Parker?

    A.He started NASA.

B.He foresaw the solar wind when he was 31.

    C.He designed the Parker spacecraft.

D.He will study the sun using the Parker spacecraft.

4Judging from the content, the passage most probably belongs to   .

    A.a story book B.an advertisement

C.a science fiction D.a news report

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

“Life of Pi” is narrated by an older Pi and takes place in the present as he tells his life story to a writer. Pi begins with how he got his name and how his family owned a zoo, but eventually leads into his family needing to leave India for financial 1. The heart of the story lies in Pi as a young man and the time he spent out at sea on a lifeboat with a tiger named Richard Parker, but getting to that point is quite an ordeal(苦难考验). Pi loses everything and everyone close to him in the blink of an eye and he doesn’t 2 on making what feels like an unbreakable bond with a Bengal tiger.

The 3 film offers a rather marvelous message about religion as Pi discusses the experimentation with several different religions as a young boy. Even though it seems kind of silly that a boy has 4 so many religions at one point in his life, it portrays a/an 5 message in a light that doesn’t seem too preachy(说教的). But the religious aspect is really only a backdrop for being on your own 6 to finding who you really are. Feeling so alone for so long and having Pi talk about not being alone and not getting to say goodbye to those he cared about most is one of those things that just hits you really hard.

While witnessing Pi attempt to tame Richard Parker is really 7, there are so many unbelievable sights to witness in “Life of Pi”. There’s the whale, the jellyfish, the flying fish, that 8 storm, and that seaweed island with all of the meerkats (a kind of monkey). “Life of Pi” never really lets up on being 9 breathtaking and amazing from beginning to end.

“Life of Pi” is pleasantly satisfying. With a heartfelt message, beautiful visuals, and stunning camera work. “Life of Pi” is truly a sight to behold and illustrates how 10 3D can be to a film that isn’t just a summer hit or blockbuster.
