26、“Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity, ” said the American talk show host Oprah Winfrey. I’ve never watched her show, but when a self-made billionaire gives life advice it’s probably worth listening to.
Her point is that blind luck is very rare. You may have to be lucky to find a good job these days but that does not mean you should sit at home waiting for the opportunity to come to you. If you’re a Chinese, you may already be familiar with the tale of a farmer waiting by a tree stump for a rabbit to run out and break its neck.
A book by the UK psychologist Richard Wiseman, called The Luck Factor, argues we can all make ourselves luckier. It’s most about going to a temple to burn some incense in hopes that the gods will give you good fortune, but practical advice you can follow each day.
Wiseman conducted an experiment as part of his studies. First he divided volunteers into two groups: those who said they were lucky in life and those who said they were not. He gave everyone a newspaper and asked them to look through it to count how many photographs it had inside. On average, the unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs while the lucky people took just seconds. Why? On the second page of the newspaper, a command, “Stop counting. There are 43 photographs in this newspaper,” was written in big letters. The unlucky people mostly did not spot the message.
It’s easy to compare this situation to a young person looking for jobs in a local paper. They might search so hard for one type of position that they miss an even better opportunity. People who are “lucky”, in fact, keep an open mind and don’t go through the same routine every day.
In a word, try to turn bad luck into good. Even if you do fall down and break a leg, the time spent at home can be used wisely to study English.

27、When your pet has an emergency, first aid is not a substitute for veterinary(兽医) treatment. However, before you are able to get your pet to a veterinarian(兽医), knowing some basic first aid can help.
Bite Wounds
Approach the pet carefully to avoid getting bitten. Wear a mask for the animal and then check the wound. Clean the wound with large amounts of saline(盐水). If these are not available, then regular water may be used. Wrap large open wounds to keep them clean.
Bleeding
Apply firm, direct pressure over the bleeding area until the bleeding stops. Hold the pressure for at least 10 minutes. Avoid bandages that cut off circulation.
__________
Check to see if the animal is choking(窒息) on a foreign object. If an animal is not breathing, place it on a firm surface with its left side up. Check for a heartbeat. If you hear a heartbeat but not breathing, close the animal’s mouth and breathe directly into its nose—not the mouth—until the chest expands. Repeat 12 to 15 times per minute.
Burns
Wash the burn immediately with large amounts of cool, running water. Apply an ice pack for 15—20 minutes. Do not place an ice pack directly on the skin. Wrap the pack in a light towel or other cover. If the animal has large quantities of dry chemicals on it skin, brush them off. Water may activate some dry chemicals.
Fractures (骨折)
Symptoms include pain, inability to use a limb (腿). Wear a mask for the pet and look for bleeding. If you can control bleeding without causing more injury, then do so. Watch for signs of shock. Don’t try to set the fractures by pulling the limb. Transport the pet to the veterinarian immediately, supporting the injured part as best as you can.

28、The most popular surname in Germany and Switzerland is Müller, while in Ukraine, it’s Melnik; both are words for a miller. And in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US, it’s Smith—as in blacksmith, silversmith, locksmith, gunsmith. These names date back as far as the Middle Ages, when a person’s job was such a defining characteristic that it became their literal identity.
How did work become to be so connected with identity—and is it too late to separate our perceptions of self from our professional lives?
Historically, most people didn’t get to choose their jobs, says Anne Wilson, a professor of psychology. “It was usually generational—your father was a carpenter, so you were a carpenter,” she says. “Or, you’d just take a job based on the opportunities available.”
Those who let their jobs consume their identities may be doing so at their own expense. When people invest a large amount of their time and energy into their career, explains Wilson, it can lead to a psychological state called “enmeshment”, where the boundaries between work and personal life are blurred.
Wilson points out that doing work you love is not a bad thing, nor is considering what you do for a living an important part of who you are. But she says moving away from a system where people are defined primarily by their jobs will take more than realizing there is a problem. “We often set people up to feel dissatisfied; if they don’t find themselves in that perfect job, they’ve somehow failed,” she says.
“Rather than big, very difficult changes, get hobbies a little at a time, make friends a little at a time,” she suggests. “Ultimately, you have to diversify your life. Diversify yourself.”

Ben Lyne has been jogging for years. However, last February, he decided to make things more meaningful on his morning runs. As he jogged along, he often saw the faces of people passing by in cars. Noticing how unhappy many people looked as they drove long hours to work, he decided to carry a sign that simply says, “I believe in you.”
At first, he wasn’t sure whether anyone would notice it. Then, messages started appearing on a website page of Eagle Mountain’s community. People were noticing and appreciating (感激) his encouragement.

That day I saw the sign Ben was holding up was just what I needed to get through my fears of seeing my doctor. I helped myself calm down and believe that everything would be OK.”
In fact, another man who spotted (发现) the sign while driving stopped to tell Ben the sign had saved his life. Last Saturday, this guy was just thinking about ending his life when he saw Ben with a sign in hand, which helped him out of it.

In the United States, a company is working on a project that could change the way we think about public transportation. Its【1】system would move people around in steel tubes. Those passengers would be traveling at speeds of up to 1, 200 kilometers per hour.
The futuristic steel tube transportation system is called Hyperloop. Workers plan to test the system next year in a 【2】built community called Quay Valley. The town will be powered.【3】by energy from the sun.
The Hyperloop transport system is the idea of businessman Elon Musk. Dirk Ahlborn is head of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies. He says his company has taken Mr. Musk's idea and is【4】a system that will be safe, environmentally friendly and fast.
“It's 100 percent solar【5】. We're not going to get up to 760 miles per hour, but we believe we can actually break the records that exist right now.”
This means that a four-hour drive from Los Angeles, California to Las Vegas, Nevada, could someday take only 30 minutes by Hyperloop.
The system involves a series of capsules that【6】inside a long tube. These containers would not need to travel along a pathway or track. . The system-has been designed to operate above or below ground.
“Inside the tube you create a low【7】environment very similar to an airplane that's at high altitudes. So now the capsule travelling inside the tube doesn't meet with as much【8】, and therefore can travel really fast with very little energy.”
Dirk Ahlborn and his company will use an eight-kilometer track in Quay Valley to find the best way to set up passenger traffic and repair capsules. A larger system will cost a(n)【9】six to $10 billion to build.
If Mr. Ahlborn and his company succeed, we may one day see these very fast Hyperloop capsules 【10】through tubes around the world.

In 1985 my parents made the big move from Illinois, to southern Califormia, along with three very tiny children and all their household possessions. My mother had carefully wrapped and packed four boxes of her mother’s hand-painted dinner china. Grandmother had painted this lovely set herself, choosing a forget-me-not pattern (勿忘我图案).
Unfortunately, something happened during the move. One box of the china didn’t make it. It never arrived at our new house. So my mother had only three-quarters of the set — she had plates of different sizes and some serving pieces, but missing were the cups and saucers (茶碟) and the bowls. Often at family gatherings or when we would all sit down for a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, my mother would say something about the missing china and how she wished it had survived the trip.
When my mother died I inherited Grandmother’s china. I, too, used the set on many special occasions, and I, too, wondered what had happened to the missing box.
I love to visit flea markets (跳蚤市场), hunting for treasures. It’s great fun to walk up and down the streets early in the morning, watching as the vendors (摊主) spread their wares on the ground.
I hadn’t been to a flea market in over a year when, one Sunday in 2013, I got the itch to go. So I crawled out of bed at 5 a.m., and drove an hour to the Giant Rose Bowl Flea Market in another town. I was looking around and after a couple of hours I was thinking about leaving. I rounded the last corner and took a few steps down the street when I noticed some china spread on the floor. I saw that it was hand-painted china...With forget-me-nots! I raced over to look at it more closely, and picked up a cup and saucer...Forget-me-nots! Exactly like Grandmother’s china, with the same delicate strokes (笔画) and the same thin gold bands around the edges. I looked at the rest of the items-there were the cups! The saucers! The bowls! It was Grandmother’s china!
