24、Many years ago, when I was working as a volunteer(志愿者)at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Lisa. The poor little girl had a very serious disease and was dying. The doctor had done his best but no medicine really worked. The only chance to save her seemed to be a blood transfusion(输血)from her five-year-old brother. The little boy had the same disease before and had developed the antibodies(抗体)to fight the illness.
The doctor talked to the little boy about what they planned to do, and asked him if he would be willing(愿意的)to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate(迟疑)for a moment. He took a deep breath and said, “Yes, I’ll do it if it can save Lisa.”
As the transfusion was going on, the little boy lay quietly in bed next to his sister. He 1ooked at her and smiled all the time. When everything was done and the colour returned to his sister’s face, his smile disappeared and he looked a little afraid. He 1ooked up at the doctor and asked, “Will I start to die now?”
He was too young to understand the doctor. He thought he would have to give all his blood to his sister, but he agreed.

25、Now I’m studying in the US. I find there are some differences between schools in the US and in China.
One big difference is the clothes students wear at school and how they look. In my country, all the students should wear uniforms when they go to school. Boys aren’t allowed (允许) to have long hair. Girls aren’t allowed to have long or colored nails (指甲) . But American students always wear casual clothes (便装) and jewelries (首饰). A British student tells me that students in England can also dress casually in the school.
Another difference is about the rules for parents. When we begin a new year in my school, our parents have to go to a meeting in our class. If they don’t go to that meeting, their children won’t have a grade or a report card (成绩单) from school. However, in the US, there aren’t such strict rules above (以上).
In the US, many students work after school, but students can’t go to work in my school because they can’t find a job if they’re under 18. I think American students’ part-time jobs help them make money. More importantly, taking part-time jobs helps them become more independent. They’re able to do things by themselves in their own way, without asking other people for help.
【1】What are girl students allowed to do in the writer’s country? __________
A.To have long nails.
B.To have colored nails.
C.To wear their own clothes.
D.To have long hair.

C.They have to send their children to the school.
D.They have to send their children’s report card to the school.
【3】What is true about the students in the US? __________
A.They can design (设计) their own uniforms.
B.They can take part-time jobs.
C.They cannot move around in the school.
D.They cannot do things by themselves.

A.Chinese students can wear casual clothes in the school
B.at the end of the year, parents in China have to go to a meeting in the class

D.American parents don’t give their children any money
26、It came as a real shock(震惊) to find out that chickens could tell what color they were eating.
I picked up a package of mixed greens one day. I anxiously brought it home and immediately took a trip out to the chicken house to deliver(递送) it. I knew the girls would welcome the treat!
My chickens have their regular gravity-type feeder for their grain(谷物), and I have a large plastic dog dish that I use for those special treats.
I emptied the bag of greens into the dog dish and stood back, as I usually do, to watch for a minute. I began to notice that the chickens were eating the green lettuce(莴苣)but were leaving the red leaves. I though it must be mistaken, but I didn’t have time to find out for sure right then.
When I went back a short time later, the dish was empty except for the red leaves. The chickens didn’t eat them with the red leaves. It took several hours, but they finally did eat it. I guess if they had their druthers(偏爱), they’d choose for green leaves only. Red leaves only satisfy in the absence of greens.
【1】The word “girls”in the second paragraph means “________”
A. chickens B. greens C. colors
【2】What was used to feed the chicken as the special treat?
A. A heavy feeder B. A big plastic dog dish C. A special plate

B. He usually offers some water for the chicken.
C. He often leaves first and then comes back to have a look.
