四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、

A new brain research (大脑研究) shows that choosing handwriting instead of using a keyboard can bring better learning and memory.

“When you write your shopping list or class notes by hand, you remember what you wrote better later,” said Audrey van der Meer, who did the study.

12 young grown-ups and 12 children took part in the study. This is the first time that children have taken part in such a study. Special machines were used to follow and record (记录) brain wave (电波) activity. Each person wore a special cap with over 250 electrodes on the head, and was asked to write by hand and use a keyboard.

The results (结果) showed that the brain in both young grown-ups and children is much more active when writing by hand than when using a keyboard. According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses become active by holding a pen and pushing it down on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These build connection (联系) between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.

Van der Meer believes that the results let people know the importance of children’s drawing and writing at an early age, especially at school. “Learning to write by hand is a bit slower course, but parents should encourage (鼓励) it because it’s important for children to experience the tiring step of learning to write by hand,” she said.

The hand movements are helpful in some ways. “If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand needs control of more skills and senses. It’s important to put the brain in a learning condition as often as possible,” Van der Meer added. For example, you might use a keyboard to write a passage, but you should take notes by hand in class.

【1】Which is the correct order (顺序) of the research steps?

① Record and study the results.

② Put special caps on each person.

    ③ Find 12 young grown-ups and 12 children.

④ Ask people to write by hand and use a keyboard.

    A.③②④①

    B.②④①③

    C.③①②④

    D.②①④③

【2】What is the result of the research?

A.You can remember what you wrote better when using a keyboard.

B.The brain is more active when writing by hand than when using a keyboard.

C.All Children at school should draw and write by hand at an early age.

D.Learning to write by hand is a bit slower than using a keyboard.

【3】What does the underlined word “These” refer to (指代) ?

A.The senses you experience when writing by hand.

B.The sound you hear when writing by hand.

C.The letters you are learning to write.

D.The parts of the brain you use to learn.

【4】What can we infer (推断) from the passage?

A.People will write their shopping lists from now on.

B.Young grown-ups should take part in more studies.

C.Schools may encourage students to write more by hand.

    D.Children won’t use a keyboard to write a passage.

【5】Which is the best title for the passage?

    A.A New Brain Research

    B.Shopping Lists or Class Notes

    C.An Important Learning Condition

    D.Handwriting or Keyboard

Hurricanes are powerful windstorms. A hurricane begins in a low pressure area over warm water. Air is pulled inward by the low pressure. Wind begins to rotate counterclockwise(逆时针旋转). As pressure drops near the center, wind speed increases. It pulls wet air from the ocean’s surface. The wet air moves upward in the center. The air cools and rainstorms form. This pattern continues as the storm feeds on itself, growing stronger and higher. When the wind speed is greater than 73 mph, it is a hurricane. A column of calm, warm, cloudless air forms in the center. It is the eye of the storm.

A hurricane can become 10 miles high and 200 miles wide. It travels across the ocean at several different speeds. It might change direction several times. That is why it is hard to know when and where it will hit land. If it hits land, it can cause more destruction than any other type of storm on Earth. It weakens fast as it passes over land.

Hurricanes are different, depending on their wind speeds. The winds of Class I are 74-95 miles per hour (mph). The highest class is 5. This means the winds are moving faster than 155 mph. The higher the class, the more damage it causes.

Hurricanes are given names so weatherman can tell them apart when there are more than one over the ocean. Names were first given to possible hurricanes by the United States Weather Bureau in 1953 with women’s names such as Carol, Sarah, Maria, or Helene. On May 12, 1978, it was announced that hurricanes would also have men’s names like Hugo, David, Gilbert, or Alberto. Now, alphabetical(按字母顺序的) lists of male and female names are used. By putting the names in alphabetical order, it is easy to know if the hurricane is the first, third or fifth one in that year. Each list includes up to 24 names, but they are seldom all used.

【1】When does the storm become a hurricane?

    A.When rainstorm is forming.

B.When the air is in low pressure area.

C.When air forms in the center.

D.When the wind speed is over 73 mph.

【2】What happens when a hurricane reaches land?

    A.It becomes weak very fast.

    B.It becomes 10 miles high.

    C.It becomes 200 miles wide.

    D.It changes direction some times.

【3】What will the wind speed of a Class II hurricane probably be?

    A.74-95 mph.

    B.Over 155 mph.

    C.About 115 mph.

    D.200 mph.

    【4】Why are hurricanes given names?

A.It is easy for the weatherman to know if the hurricane is the first one.

B.It is easy for the weatherman to tell them apart if there are more than one.

C.It is equal for male and female to have rights to own hurricane’s names.

D.It is equal for the Weather Bureau to list out all the names for hurricanes.

【5】What can we infer from the last sentence of the passage?

A.It tells that hurricanes would also have men’s names.

B.It is seldom to have that many hurricanes in one year.

C.It’s not simple to put the names in alphabetical order.

D.It tells that many names of hurricanes are not for men.

  • 26、How can you change negative thoughts? Many people suggest thinking of something bright and happy. However, Canadian scientists from Queen’s University said that there might be another way: by walking like a happy person.

“It is not surprising that our mood and the way we feel affects how we walk, but we want to see whether the way we move also affects how we feel.” explained Nikolaus Troje, the lead scientist.

Scientists believe that the way we remember emotional messages is influenced by our mood. When we’re sad, we’ll remember negative information far more easily than positive messages, especially when the information is about ourselves.

In order to prove this, Troje and his team watched 47 people walking on the treadmill (跑步机) by cameras. Half of the people were encouraged to follow a depressive (压抑) walking style, while the other half moved like a happy person. Walking speed was kept equal for both groups. Meanwhile, the scientists read out a list of positive and negative words. Then, people were asked to recite (背出) as many words as they could remember.

As expected, those who had been following the depressive style remembered more negative words than those walking in a happy manner. This shows that our walk influences the way we process (处理) information. Scientists also believe that using a happy walking style could help with treatment for depression.

【1】According to scientists from Queen’s University, how can we change negative thoughts?

    A.To hang out with friends.

B.To think about a happy person.

C.To walk like a happy person.

    D.To remember emotional messages.

【2】What do we know about Troje’s test?

B.47 people were required to walk at two different speeds.

C.47 people recited the words they could remember after walking.

D.Scientists asked 47 people to tell their feelings about depression.

【3】According to this passage, who can be helped by the scientists’ discovery?

A.People who want to walk faster.

    B.Patients suffering from memory loss.

C.People who want to lose weight.

    D.Patients suffering from depression.

【4】Where can you probably find this article?

    A.Ina travel guide.

    B.In a fashion journal.

    C.In a patient’s diary.

    D.In a science magazine.

  • 27、When I was in the middle school, I seldom raised my hands to answer questions in class. And I found lots of my classmates were just like me. When the teacher asked a question, I always lowered my head because I was afraid that the teacher saw me.

One day, in a foreign language class, Mr. Black gave us a lesson. He wanted us to be active in class, so he asked us some questions, but no one answered. “At the beginning of the class, let me tell you a story.” He said.

“When I came to the United States to study, the university often invited famous people to make speeches. Before the beginning of every speech, I found an interesting thing. The students around me always took a cardboard folded in half, wrote their names in bold (粗体) with the most eye-catching color, and then placed the cardboard on the seat. So when the speaker needed the answers from the students, he could see and call a listener’s name directly.”

“I couldn’t understand that my classmates told me the speakers were all top people who meant chances. When your answer was to their surprise, it means they might give you more chances. In fact, I really saw a few students got great chances because of that.”

After listening to the story, I understood that the chance will not find you itself. You must show yourself all the time so that you can find a chance and then catch it.
