  • 24、Once upon a time a couple of parrots lived in a huge mango tree. One morning, when the parrots went out to search for food, a snake climbed up the tree and ate some of the eggs. When the parrots came back, they were shocked to find some eggs missing.

As the days passed, the snake grew greedy (贪婪的) and he ate all the eggs. The parrots got mad and they decided to punish the snake. They didn’t have an idea, so they asked their friend, a wise fox, for advice.

The fox thought for a while, and then he came up with a good plan. He said to the parrots, “The princesses swim in the river every afternoon. The guards and servants watch over their clothes and valuable things. You can pick up a small thing, such as a necklace, an earring, or a ring and so on, and drop it into the snake’s hole.”

The next afternoon, the parrots did as the fox told them. In the end, the guards and servants reached the snake’s hole and found the earring. One of the guards took out his sword (剑) and killed the snake. The parrots were pleased and lived happily from then on.

  • 25、The year of the Dragon will begin on February 10, 2024. The Dragon is the fifth sign of the Chinese Zodiac (生肖). Dragons are not real animals. Chinese dragons can fly in the sky or swim in the sea. In stories, dragons rule over water, rainfall, wind and flood.

The Chinese dragon is a symbol of strength and good luck. The emperors of ancient China loved dragons. Their clothes were covered with pictures of yellow dragons. The dragon is very important in Chinese culture. We Chinese people are proud to call ourselves “the descendants (传人) of the dragon”. A number of Chinese sayings refer to dragons. For example, “Hoping one’s child will become a dragon”, which means hoping he or she will be successful.

Unlike in China, dragons are seen differently in Western countries. Western dragons often look like dinosaurs. They breathe fire and catch people. It is a common fairy tale about a man who becomes a hero after killing a dragon and saving a princess. In the English movie How to Train Your Dragon (《 驯龙记》), a little boy becomes much braver by killing some bad dragons. In one of the Harry Potter stories, Harry Potter has to fight against a scary dragon and get back the golden egg from its nest.

Because of this, some Chinese experts have suggested changing the English word “Dragon” into its pinyinLong”. They believe the name “Dragon” makes Western people think badly about China. But some don’t agree. They think Chinese people can look after their own culture. Many Western people already know the differences between Chinese dragons and Western ones.

【1】Which power of dragons is NOT mentioned in Chinese stories?

A.They can fly in the sky.

B.They can swim in the sea.

C.They can rule water and wind.

D.They can catch and eat people.

【2】What does the sentence “Hoping one’s child will become a dragon” in Paragraph 2 mean in Chinese?

    A.龙马精神

    B.龙飞凤舞

    C.望子成龙

    D.龙腾虎跃

【3】Who can be called as “a hero” in Western fairy tales?

A.A man who can train a dog.

B.A man who can get an egg.

C.A man who can breathe fire.

D.A man who can kill a dragon.

【4】According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.There are many Chinese sayings about dragons.

B.The Dragon is the first sign of the Chinese Zodiac.

C.Harry Potter becomes much braver by killing some bad dragons.

D.Emperors in China liked wearing clothes with red dragon pictures.

【5】Why do Chinese experts suggest changing “Dragon” into Chinese pinyinLong”?

A.Because Chinese are proud of their own pinyin.

B.Because dragon makes Western people think highly of China.

C.Because Western people know nothing about Chinese culture.

D.Because “Dragon” in Western countries doesn’t carry the same cultural meanings as in China.

  • 26、   Five years ago, when I taught art at a school in Seattle, I used Tinker toys(积木)as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students. I put a small set of Tinker toys in front of each student, and said,” Make something out of the Tinker toys. You have 45 minutes today — and 45 minutes each day for the rest of the week.”

A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see what the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.

Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinker toys in his free time. His creations filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would affect other students.

Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside, for I might lose those students who had a different style of thinking. Without fail one would declare. “But I’m just not creative.”

“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep?”

    “Oh, sure.”

“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.” The student would tell something wildly imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. “That’s pretty creative. Who does that for you?”

    “Nobody. I do it.”

“Really — at night, when you’re asleep?”

    “Sure.”

“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay?”

1The teacher used Tinker toys in class in order to .

A.make the lessons more exciting B.know more about the student

C.raise the students’ interest in art D.teach the students about toy design

2What do we know about the boy mentioned in Paragraph 3?

A.He was imaginative. B.He was active in class.

C.He preferred to study alone. D.He liked to help his teacher.

3What does the underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.choice B.difficulty C.fault D.power

    4We can learn that .

A.most students just made something according to the model plans

B.the boy spent 45 minutes every day making a lot of creations

C.the boy’s creativity would affect other students forever

D.the student dreaming at night was also very creative.

5The best title for the passage may be

A.An Art Class B.An Encouraging Teacher

C.Tinker Toys D.An Unexpected Teaching Assistant
