24、 The United Nations lists the rights(权利)of children. Most countries agree with all of them, but some countries do not. The following are some of the most important rights of children.
●Children have the right to be fed, clothed and sheltered by their family. If their family cannot do so, the government should take responsibility.
●Children have the right to an education and medical care.
●Children must not be tortured(虐待)or cruelly punished by their parents or any others.
●Children have the right to expect the government to protect them from all kinds of abuse(虐待).
●No child under fifteen should fight in an army.
●Children have the right to be protected(保护)from working too hard to make money for other people.
In some countries children do not have these rights. Many young children are made to work long hours in factories and on farms. In some countries there are so few schools that only rich children get an education. And there aren't enough doctors or nurses to help many children when they are sick, either.

25、A Special Card
“Attention, everyone!” Miss Dalrymple looked at her class of ten-year-olds. “Today we are going to create a special card for Father’s Day, which falls on this weekend.” Then she busied herself handing out the paper and art materials to her noisy pupils.
They were a mixed punch. Some came from the rich side of the town, but the majorities(大部分)were from parents who struggled to get jobs. So she had not been eager to carry out this activity.
“Think about all the things that your dad does that makes him special,” she said loudly as she came up to the last table. “You can write a poem or short story that makes your dad special. The written part of this activity should be completed before you start to decorate your card.”
Andrew looked at the blank page. He had never met, spoken to, or been hugged by his dad, so how could he write about him? Once when he was looking in his grandma’s photo box, he had seen an old black and white photo but it was badly creased (弄皱) and difficult to recognize any clear features(特点). Grandma had quickly taken it from him and buried it deeply among the rest, never to be found again. After thinking for a while, he wrote:
Dear Dad,
You are a person I do not know and would probably not recognize as I only saw an old photo of you a long time ago. I think and wonder about you often, especially when I have no one to talk to. One day when I grow up I will do an Internet search to find you, but I am not sure whether I will be successful as several efforts by the Child Support Agency have not been successful.
Happy Father’s Day, Dad.
Love,
Andrew

26、Height is just one of the thousands of features your genes(基因)decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall, too, but if you have questions about how tall you're going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don't decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential(潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height.
No doubt you're wondering how fast you should grow. It depends. There's no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 2 inches (6 centimeters) a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty (when your body starts changing and becoming more grown up).
Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. Two centimeters here and 2 inches there are not nearly as important as the height you're at now, how you've been growing up to this point, and what other changes your body may be going through.
Don't be scared if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt(高峰)during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later ----between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys.
You'll usually begin to notice that you're growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty.
【1】The Chinese for the word “puberty” is _____.
A. 童年时期 B. 生长发育期 C. 习惯养成期 D. 婴幼儿时期

【3】This passage is mainly about ______.
A. how the genes work in your body B. when is the time you grow fast
C. why you look like your parents D. how you grow to a certain height
【4】After reading this passage, we can explain ______.
A. how good it is to be a doctor B. how much sleep time we need
C. why genes can’t decide everything D. what healthy diet is
【5】Which is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Your height most probably depends on how high your parents are.
B. Girls’ age for starting puberty is usually earlier than that for boys’.
C. The time showing the first changes of puberty is never noticed.
D. You may be scared sometimes when you grow too fast.
27、Every year on my birthday since I was 11, a white gardenia(栀子花)was sent to my house. No card ever came with it. Calls to the flower shop were not helpful at all. After some time I stopped trying to find out the sender’s name and was just pleased with the beautiful white flower, in soft pink paper.

A month before my high school graduation(毕业), my father died. I was so sad that I became uninterested in my upcoming graduation dance, and I didn’t care whether I had a new dress or not. In fact, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia: lovely, strong and perfect, with perhaps a bit of mystery(神秘).
